Shingles will get very painful within about 4-5 days of erupting. Your skin will feel likes it's on fire. And I mean ON FIRE.

It looks like a red bumpy rash, irregular in shape. Everyone will be different in severity, just like the chicken pox.

If you think you might have it, I suggest you go see the doc. ABX should be rx'd and you may need some pain meds for the burning. If it's anywhere near your eyes, it can damage your eyesight.

Hi Sarah~ I've had shingles and I agree w/FG; you'll know if it's a possiblity. I first thought I had a cracked rib, as the pain was unbearable. I had a crusty raised rash on my ribcage that was huge.

This was 33 yrs ago, right after I got married. The pain lasted for months. Now they have better meds for it. Like FG said~ it's extremely painful as it's nerve endings involved. Good luck.

I had shingles just before or while I had mononucleosis in 1995/96.

It was extremely painful for me. It was on a very sensitive area on the upper part of my chest. I had to put washcloths in my bra to keep the bra from irritating it.

I actually have a scar going across the right side of my upper chest where the bumps and rash was. The bumps looked like really ticked off chicken pox. Bigger than any of the pox that I had when I had chicken pox when I was 5.

Yes, I've had them too. The first sign is a tingling sensation in an area which follows an invisible line as it travels along a nerve.

If you can get antiviral medication in the first 48-72 hours of the very first blister occurring, you can virtually guarantee a milder dose, with less after pain.

Get thee to your doctor Sarah if you even suspect shingles. They can be really painful if left untreated even for a few days.

sabimax 08-26-2008 05:21 AM

thanks all,
well the rash are real small dots..actually a bit smaller or same size as a chicken pox....well if continues today I will get to drs..thanks all, sarah:)

Koala77 08-26-2008 05:23 AM

Shingles tend to come out into blisters after the tingly stage Sarah, so anything that looks like a blister needs to be checked out.

I hope it turns out to be just an itchy bite, and nothing more serious.

Someone in another thread mentioned sand fleas and that they are inland
also.........My brother got them this summer(the bites) when he was
on vacation. he was nowhere near the beach. annoying little
buggers huh??

HOpe you stop itching soon......

whispers 08-26-2008 03:15 PM

I don't think I have ever been bitten by sand fleas. I was bitten by chiggers , though. They itch like crazy. At first, I did not know what they were. They looked like innocent little red dots until I noticed they moved! Too late ! I ran for cover.

This is what I know about shingles. It is not much. There is a vaccine for shingles which is recommended especially because as it was said it is a condition that is extremely painful. Also, those of us who had chicken pox are susceptible of getting shingles. Isn't that the pits?

However, it is not recommended for those of us who have ms. It is also a new vaccine, which makes a double no for us.

I am wondering though, in general, should our children be vaccinated agains shingles since most of them had the chicken pox?

sabimax 08-26-2008 03:32 PM

I dont know on the vaccinations...as my oldest three had the pox...the younger ones needed to ahve the chicken pox vaccine to go to school...I never believed in them starting that vaccination....but oh well.....

well question, if sand mites..or what ever they are called...bite...would the bites be there then itchy I would think...

these seem to come out if I itch...then be spots..very small..spot like pimple...and yes one or two have looked like a tiny blister on it....

so I better call dr office tomorrow and ask..or maybe now since they arent closed yet..hugss and tahnks again to all, sarah

a friend of mine told me that he saw vygone many seems to be really satisfied how well it works so I bought one. I applied it to my shingles and the burning stopped immediately after some treatments and it never come back until now. so i guess it is worth a try.

Koala77 09-03-2008 10:42 PM

I was wondering how you got on at the doctor's Sarah? Was it shingles after all?

sassy 09-04-2008 08:45 AM

My last case of shingles was caught early, I thought they were spider bites at first but for some reason it dawned on me the seemed to be following a nerve so went to neurologist that day.

Thank God for Valtrex and Neurontin.

I have never heard that MS patients shouldn't have the vaccine, whoever said that or anyone in the know can you direct me someplace where that info can be found? Thanks

Doesn't it have something do with it being a "live" virus vaccine or something...geez...I can't remember. Sorry...brain fog. My name is Cheryl and I have MS!

sassy 09-05-2008 06:16 AM

oops, sorry Cheryl, and hello, I'm Brenda and I have MS with short-memory issues.

My neuro said she didn't recommend the vaccine for me because I have had shingles and it hadn't been tested on anyone that previously had shingles. The price of it is holding me back right now but I am still considering it.

I'll have to do some more investigating about the MS issue.

Nancy T 09-05-2008 02:19 PM

I too am interested in whether the shingles vaccine is not recommended for MS patients.

(I am NOT diagnosed with MS, so I apparently don't have it, but I remain without another good explanation for my symptoms and have not had follow-up for many years.)

I am planning to take part in a trial of the shingles vaccine for ages 50-59. Otherwise it is recommended for people 60 and over.

If the vaccine is considered dangerous for those who might have an autoimmune disease, I might reconsider participating! They did not ask me any disease questions in the initial phone screening.

Ut oh!

I may I had shingles again, but now I’m not so sure. It started two days ago with a rash on the back of my neck, and down the left shoulder. It is hot and itchy and it stings like crazy. My first thought was shingles. The next day, though, my hubby mentioned that he has developed poison ivy on his left forearm and hand. Hummm, I think. My rash is on my left neck/shoulder. Gerry has poison ivy on his left hand. And yes, he does like to affectionately rub me on the neck and shoulders. Could it be? Yes. I believe my hubby has given me a really nasty case of poison ivy on my neck and shoulder. Of course it would be nasty since he literally rubbed the poison ivy kooties into my skin. Now, on day 3, it is somewhat blistery and weeping and plenty uncomfortable. It really does look exactly like those pictures of shingles you see on the Internet. It does, however, lack that searing pain I remember so well from last March when I had shingles. I’ve decided that it is Poison Ivy. At least that’s MY diagnosis and I’m sticking to it.

sabimax 09-05-2008 05:36 PM

sorry I didnt get back to you...

No wasnt shingles...and it went away after a while...I think maybe the itchys and rash were to do with a different laundry detergent..or something to do with the trip....it lasted just the few days after we got back...actually seemed to be once thru the clothes I had on trip..thru our laundry...slowly went away....hmmmm

never been allergic to anything like that but only thing I came up with...

thanks for all the info...and hugss to you all, sarah
