Aspergers Syndrome
Hi all.
I have an 11 year old son with Aspergers and just wondered if anybody else here does? I also have a 9 year old son whom the doctors think may have Tourettes or maybe Aspergers, still assessing. |
:) I am a teacher for children with Special Needs and one of my kids has Asperger Syndrome. I so love the kids in my class.
Nice to meet you! Shannon |
I have a 13 yo boy who has been diagnosed since about age eight. He looks different from many Aspies. He is literal. Great vocabulary and good at math but he is drawn toward being very animated and loud during stimulation-- especially in venues like the classroom or parties. Instead of withdrawing he tends to try to interact boldly (too boldly) with peers. He gets very loud and disruptive in class.
Stimulants tend to calm him down in these environments. The stimulants cause tics, sometimes painful tics. We have had a time balancing medication with behavior. |
Marleo.. have you tried mt. dew? It's wild what we use in the classroom these days. I never would have thought to try it, but we have one kiddo that it acutally works with.
Good luck! Shannon |
Also Have Aspergers Syndrome
I have Aspergers Syndrome, it is hard for my family to understand me, thinking that i should just 'fit in' with the world. It is great that today, when i started in this thingy, that i should find your posts//what ever you call them, about Aspergers Syndrome. why do people have any type of autism? what couses it?

Hi,
I was a Special Ed. teacher, always looked for answers to "why", but most answers not out there. Like my Ms - just happens. Dealt a bad hand - there are worse, there are better. Mefozzie - not sure, but a psychologist told me his therory was Coffee (or as in your case Mt. Dew (both HIGH in caffeine) ) for Kids with ADD with hyperactivity and poor behavior control "gates", the caffeine helped raise their "gates". Much like a hyperactive student might take Ritalin or another stimulant to help him with behaviors. IMHO operant conditioning (rewards for correct behavior and awareness of what behavior needs extinguishing) in tandem with this works well. A child (or anyone) needs to know what the boundaries are, what is behavior wanted, etc. Nobody should have to figure this out with cues, often not understood. Societal rules can be too subtle for some. |
I was diagnosed with Aspergers about a year and a half ago, but I don't believe it. I used to be really shy and attached to my mom. But now I am not as shy. I know that being really shy and uncomfortable around people is a trait, and some people develop strong bonds with certain other people. Maybe I don't know enough?

My son
My 11 yr old has bn diagnosed approx 6 yrs ago the public school in my area could not handle him so we put him in a autism behavior school. Well after 2 yrs of bn in this program we are thinking of re-enrolling him in public school but we do not want to stick him back on meds, we would like the school to incorporate some of the programs the other school used. If anyone has any advice plz plz feel free to respond. thank you.

Do you know your rights under the Special Education laws (IDEA)? When the M-Team meets and writes the IEP, you will have input about your child's needs and how they will be met by the school. SPEAK UP!!!

My Dad was recently diagnosed with Aspergers. Came as a bit of a shock initially but now I can see he fits all the behaviour patterns.
|
I have a 14 yr old son who was diagnosed with Asperger's back when he was 10. He is quite quirky, and he always seems to keep my guessing as to what he will say or do next.
The only thing about an Aspie, is the lack of social skills, and the no filter on what comes out of his mouth. It can be quite embarassing at times. And now that he is at that teenager time, life has been... |
I have not, but I suspect AS on myself which has made me interested in the subject. I've recently been interested how Temple Grandin helps children with autism. I think it can be considered in some aspects. I recommend the movie about her life "Temple Grandin", made in 2010.

I have autism as well. I have a hard time coping with troubling thoughts (these thoughts stay in my mind almost all day everyday for months).
|
I worked for many years with teens many who were on the autistic spectrum and many diagnosed with Aspergers. Indeed I sat in on many assesments. As with all aspects we are alll imdividuals. If you look at the indicators many of everyday people would tick several boxes, I know I would. The main principle here is individual, a good manager gets the best out of his team by recognising strengths and weaknesses and acting accordingly to have a team of happy productive individuals. Its about assessment and the resources available to give the support so that all can have the chance to achieve and grow. Simple idea but I helped the lucky ones they got the help still too many flounder sink or in eyes of many rebel.

Just a note that some of the original posts are from a long time ago so they may not be seen.
btw, you can have all three. You can have more than 3, although all this varies from individual to individual. Some people will have attention difficulties or obsessive or compulsive behaviours that may not be diagnosed as disordered = OCD for example. Some people can also have Asperger's and Tourette's Syndrome and OCD, so they may have tics as well as motor stereotypies or self-stimulatory behaviours. There's also Stereotypic Movement Disorder and that can be confused with tics and TS and the children don't have an ASD. Asperger's isn't an umbrella diagnosis. Once it becomes an umbrella diagnosis then everyone is in trouble who has comorbid conditions because those comorbid conditions are often the reason for difficulties. Everyone I know with Asperger's is good at math, but it doesn't mean everyone would be. The same as people I know who have ASD diagnoses are geniuses, but it doesn't mean everyone is a genius. Who is "this person" and their research? I'd be interested in reading it. Thanks. :) |
I will let the person with aspergers read this and state their opinion. I was just parroting, which I rarely do,:o but because she is an avid researcher and has her opinion on Neurotypicals and their studies.....
|
Thanks Enna. I was just interested is all.
Appreciate your time! |
In my experience as a Special Ed. Teacher with a wide variety of students many liked Math because answers did not vary. 1 + 1 is always 2 but in Reading, especially essays, answers can vary. I had a student with Dyscalculia (spelling?)(like Dyslexia but with math). At 13 the concept of 1+1=2 was difficult. Teaching strategies and learning strategies had to be appropriate for the student.
|
I can't agree with you more...each student is different. And finding the best individual strategies is knowing your student...regardless of what learning disorder they have....Aspergers is just another way to learn to help the individual.
