If MS and abnormal paps weren't enough...

3 days ago, the cyst I've had on my back (upper, kinda near my shoulder) began hurting!

I've had this cyst for years now. Once before it became in this state of being swollen and red (around the skin). I was put on some prescription at the time, and sent off. They refused to remove it saying, "Eh, if it happens again MAYBE we'll consider removing it".

Well, I know why it gets in this state. It's in a spot that's always touching the back of my chair. When I lie in the bathtub and read, it has pressure on it from the hard wall of the tub. My purse strap just happens to also hang right over it, and that doesn't help the matter.

So I have an appointment for 8:40pm tonight to go see my doctor about this. Luckily they fit me in.

I know my parents both have cysts. My mom had them on her scalp (poor Mom) and she had that one removed x3 and it always returned.

I just honestly want them to lance the thing and take the chance of it returning at this point.

Ugh. What a pain in the butt (or back! lol).

Sorry about that Laura. I hope they can remove it and it'll stay gone for a long time. My MIL had cysts on her scalp and one on her face too. She had them removed but they gradually would start to come back.

DH has them on his scalp as well, but so far refuses to get them removed. (They'd have to shave the hair in that spot.)

His doctor told him years ago that they're harmless. It sure bothers me sometimes when I'm cutting his hair though. I guess he's lucky they aren't in a spot where they can get irritated easily.

Yeah, before I had a GP and was going to various clinics to see doctors for other ailments (which happened to turn out to be MS symptoms! Dur!) I'd have the doctors look at it. All said, "Oh, looks like a cyst, harmless".

MY GP looked at it the first time I met her, and same story. "Looks like a cyst, harmless".

Well, cyst is puffy, red and sore now!

Dejibo 09-09-2008 11:25 AM

aww you poor kitten! That is awful. I had one that used to be rubbed by my bras. After I stopped wearing bras it went away. while i wore them, it kept raw and sore.

I hope they remove it for you.

Bearygood 09-09-2008 11:31 AM

I hope they remove it, too! I had a mole on my back removed quite a long time ago at the dermatologist's suggestion -- it was small but it was raised. Just to make sure, it was biopsied (everything was fine).

I'm surprised that they're reluctant to remove it!

hopefully it can be removed easily and you can stop hurting

Bra-less is the way to go! High 5 Dej! I haven't worn one since age 14? Or 15? I have a mole that's right where my strap WOULD go, it's raised, it has no problems (I have it checked routinely due to where it is) and I'm tiny in the chest, so I can get away with the tank top/tshirt combo. ;)

Beary, I imagine they're hesitant to remove it, because of the possibility of it returning. We'll see what doc says tonight though.

I wish I could go bra-less sometimes. But, things get in the way if I'm not wearing one. Someday, I'll get those things made smaller, so that they arent in my way all the time.

My boyfriend will be sad, but I think me and my back will be very happy, and I wont have to spend a lot of money trying to find a bra that doesnt have structural failures so often.

I also have a mole on the front of my shoulder, that the strap rubs on occasionally. But, it usually doesnt cause me a problem.

Geez Laura . . . are you re-living my life?

I had a cyst removed from my forehead in my mid thirties. It was one of those hard, underground ones (not the boil type), that would never have surfaced on it's own. I waited a year, and it was getting bigger.

I had it taken out by a plastic surgeon, because it was large and would leave a scar. She cut so that the scar is in a natural "wrinkle" place, and now my wrinkles have caught up with it. :D

It's really no big deal to have removed. They just froze it while I was awake, and did the minor surgery. The only part that bothered me was the sound.

LOL maybe Cherie, maybe! ;)

Mine's kinda soft feeling (it was 'hard' when it was small, after it had shrunk from my IVSM trips).

Doc. appointment is very soon, so we'll see what she says then. :p

Ok cyst is infected (well, I kinda knew that!) and so I have a script now for an antibiotic cream to apply to it.

And my doctor's referring me to a specialist to have it removed. YAY! :D Have to get rid of the infection before they can remove it she says.

I did ask if they'd send it for biopsy, and she said that they always do, so that's good as well :).

Oh, and she was very pleased to hear that I'm doing so well on such a low dose of clonazepam (.25mg or .5mg max daily) that she said, "Call if you need that prescription filled, that's excellent to hear the head pain is gone as well!".

So she's no longer questioning giving me that prescription, and she also agreed 100% to have the cyst removed due to location.

Oh yeah, and she said "I'm not surprised to hear you slept like a baby on Clonazepam". She laughed at my mental picture of my bedsheets thrown around the room (was the case previously!)

Hey laura~ I'm seeing this late, but glad that you went to the Dr. My DS has had a couple of cysts that sound like yours. One started out hard and small and then all of a sudden, one day it was red, puffy and extremely sore.

I took him to his transplant surgeon and he removed it immediately and packed it. Like yours, it was full of infection. Glad your'e getting it taken care of. I believe they called it a Sebaceous Cyst. You'll do just fine! *Way to go to be your own advocate*

Thanks DM.

I'm actually looking forward to the procedure of it being removed. I'm such a tomboy when it comes to gross stuff in the body LOL. I'll actually want to see what they pull out ;)

weeble 09-10-2008 02:54 AM

Wish you well Laura:)

Hope the ab helps and you are feeling better soon. Its a darn crime that MS isn't enough of an ailment for us to have to deal with!

I know they sometimes try to call these type of problems "cosmetic surgery" (i.e. you pay) if it is not a major bother/worry, so the doctors wait till it does potentially pose a health risk in order for you to get it done free. Free is good. :D

I had some broken blood vessels (can't remember the medical name) on my neck and chest when I went in to have that cyst removed. She threw in burning them off while I was there, so it worked out well. :)

Good luck!

dmplaura 09-10-2008 12:01 PM

I sure hope they don't consider it as a cosmetic thing ;)

I believe with doctor referral backing it however, it won't be taken as such. I hope not anyways!

2 infections in a year in it, not a good thing!

Thanks again all :)

No, they wouldn't now. No doubt that's the reason the doctor somewhat blew it off in the beginning though ("wait and see").

dmplaura 09-10-2008 01:35 PM

Yeah, that's entirely possible. Probably entirely true. After hour clinics... I don't miss those what so ever. Called my doctor yesterday at 10:30 am, secretary had me in that day.

Picked my cream up today (antibiotic). This is the same stuff I used previously when I had this cyst infected. I also refilled my Amitriptyline.

I don't know what my work insurance did this year for 'changes', but neither medication cost me anything!

Darn, I wish they'd cover Copaxone 100% LOL!
