Noise
OK - is it just me or does anyone else with MS have a very low tolerance for noise?
I am so used to the relative peace and quiet I have most all day while I'm home alone that I'm getting to the point of having no tolerance for noise. Example - Kevin's girlfriend came over this evening and ate supper with us. No problem. But she is so loud and seems to be constantly making some type of noise. If it's not talking then she's singing or humming. Constantly. And it seems she cannot just walk in the house....she has to sort of flit around like Tinkerbell (jumping and skipping). Not to mention she terrorizes poor Tigger (my little orange kitty). He hears her voice and hightails it under the bed!! I didn't mean for this to sound like a bashing fest but I feel so bad for feeling like this! She's a sweet girl and I really do love her.....I just have such a low tolerance for noise these days. Even when I was grocery shopping yesterday the music was so loud that I finally asked the lady at the courtesy desk if the person who was in charge of the concert was hard of hearing. She agreed but said that she had no control over the volume. I feel like that grouchy old woman that all the kids in the neighborhood are scared of!! And I'm only 47!!! :o I think it's time for some ear plugs. :( |
NOOOOO Kelly! NOT TINKERBELL!!!!!
I have a low tolerance for outside noise, esp when I'm trying to watch TV or concentrate on something. I really get aggravated when the boy's are watching Football and they just go crazy. Seems like when that's going on, the noise is escalated. |
I notice more than two folks talking at same time, I get irritated at the volume, could be me, but noise has bugged me more the last few years.
anyone know why or heard any reason because, I think you will find a fair number of MSers who are bothered by noise. I seem to recall this subject being discussed b4, but I don't recall if there was a given reason, or if anyone had heard any type of explanation. |
I have a VERY low tolerance for noise. If I go somewhere and notice the noise is bothering me, I leave. I have even gotten up from tables at a restaurant (before I order anything) just because the music or atmosphere is too loud for me.
It took me quite a while to figure out why I was feeling the way I was in certain stores or environment. Now I know it is the noise and can take myself out of the area so I can feel better. One of the worst places is at my DD's school with all the kids so I limit my time there. My DD will talk non-stop, hum, sing, play loud music, talk to her guinea pig constantly so I learned to tolerate it pretty well. If I am having a bad day, I tell her to tune it down and luckily she listens. |
Definitely a low tolerance for noise here. I'm also not a deep sleeper it seems, so any little noise wakes me up :(
|
Yep...very very sensitive to noise here.
I live with my parents, and both of them are becoming hard of hearing. I'm constantly turning their tv's down...constantly asking them to use their "inside voices". When we go to a restaurant, if there are any small children around (small as in, anyone younger than 16) I can sometimes barely stand it. Went to a chinese restaurant last night, place was so quiet...until these two women showed up with their kids. The waitress just HAD to seat them directly next to us. Immediately the four year old starts screaming....the women were saying "oh, isnt he cute?". (I'm holding my ears, wondering if they're bleeding and trying to not be rude and asking them if they could duct tape the kid's mouth shut. Then the little baby starts to scream (I can excuse babies screaming, but not four year olds) That scream was no where near as irritating and migraine inducing as the older kid. Isnt four an age where you can ask a kid to not scream? I dont mind loud music all that much, but loud tv's, loud people, and my mom humming (the off tune humming of the insane) are all noises that make me want to stab myself in the ear with an icepick. |

:o Sowwy, DM......that was the only thing I could think of to compare her to!! She flits around like a ballerina!! Besides, I thought you were a princess!! I feel bad now that I used her as an example....and I would never say anything to her. I'd never want to hurt her feelings or make her feel unwelcome here. I was such a grouch yesterday!! http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/n...ies/grouch.gif I'm sorry that noise bothers so many of you but glad I'm not alone. And DM, I can SO relate to the television noise....seems like they have to have it at a movie theater decibel. |
I haven't really figured this one out. I seem to have a low tolerance for some kinds of noises that I never had before. Lots of noises going on at once, like parties *shudder*, where lots of people are talking in different tones and volumes, and there is background music, clinking of dishes, chairs squeeching across the floor, etc.
Sometimes I can't talk on the phone, the voice through the receiver is like an ice pick. Certain sounds like car horns, small yappy dogs, certain people's voices...aaaaarrrgggh! I can still turn up the tunes and holler along, but I can't do background music if I'm doing anything that requires thinking. |

Yes!! Music doesn't seem to bother me - if it's music I like and I'm controlling the volume. The clinking dishes, chairs being drug across the floor, loud talking.........forget it!! I have to get out of there or risk tearing my ears off my head!! And why do some commercials seem to be at a higher volume than the TV show I'm watching. I get the volume at a level I can tolerate and then the commercial comes on and it's twice as loud!! What is up with that?? |
I'm right there with you! I have a low tolerance for noise and occasionally get the added benefit of hypersensitive hearing which makes everything seem even louder.
The worst for me is kids shrill screams and crying at the top of their lungs. I literally "feel" that noise down my spine and in my nerve endings - hard to explain but very irritating. Also hate the neighborhood teenagers who cruise down the street trying to be oh so cool with the bass as high as possible so I can feel the vibration inside my house. I dream about placing that stereo where the sun doesn't shine. ;) |
I hate loud noises of any type and in fact loud sudden noises actually cause pain in my ear drum.
Things like doors slamming or that TV ad that's always louder than the normal TV program, causes me ear pain. It's like I have supersensitive hearing now, and anything louder than average is just too loud. It hurts and I don't like it! |

Sudden noises startle me....and it seems to be getting worse. If it's an unexpected noise I jump a foot! I feel like a newborn that "startles" so easily....at least my hands don't shoot out to the sides and I start crying!! :o |
Kelly I think the same way with commercials vs tv shows, there is a definite difference in the two. I feel like I am always changing the volume between commercials. Drives me nuts.
I have a sensitivity to noise. I don't know if it is too much noise, too loud noise or what but I sometimes feel like I can't take it. I know I have a hard time concentrating when there is noise. This is hard for me because I teach dance and like to have the music loud. I've noticed the last year or so I keep turning the volume down lower. You are not alone! |
Well I'm glad it's not just me. I mentioned it to my neuro to which I got no response. The worst for me is when my whole family is over, I have 5 grandbabies from 6yrs old to 3mos. I can't stand all the noise and usally in up in my bedroom. Holidays are rough:eek:.

Many noises at once, and I go into sensory overload! There are some places we avoid going out too since they have the music up really loud, so everyone who would like to socialize almost has to shout. The last time I went to a place like that, I almost passed out!
But when I'm home, I've noticed I've had to turn up the volume on the TV and the stero to hear words. How weird is that? I used to be the "volume sargent", or at least my hubby used to call me that. :D |
:Thats-Funneh: That's too funny! That's what my boys will be calling me soon!!

Oh yes! A trip to Chuck E Cheese pretty much guarantees a brief relapse. If I absolutely must go, I always take my cane because I know I'll start staggering. It seems to be worst with multiple noises at once - I can take one loud or annoying noise, but not 3 or 4.
And I startle too! I hadn't heard that from anyone else before. If I'm on the pot and DH suddenly comes into the room and says something, I just about jump out of my skin. |

I empathize karousel, as I have one chatterbox daughter too. From a very young age, I have had to teach her: "There are 2 (or 3 ... or 5...) people in the room." "Each of us get the same amount of time to choose to talk, or choose to be quiet." "This does not mean it's "free time" for you to occupy the silence talking non-stop". :p I've also had to tell her many times that she doesn't need to say every single thing that comes into her mind. ;) She's better then when she was younger ... but still TOO much. Quote:

For years I've been jumpy around too much noise. New noisy neighbors have made me buy some $300 Bose QC earphones which lessen the noise and give me a break sometimes - but I can't wear them all the time...like w/company.
|
sensory overload! I used to go out with my husband when he would karoake but the noise in small buildings would just make me so fatigued. any other thing like that does the same thing.
|
I'm right there with you all. Seem the more people = more chaos and the overload is painful and confusing. I startle often especially when doing something repetitive like crocheting or even the dishes (no dishwasher).
I still have no rhyme or reason for it, but it seems a common sx for us MSers. Thanks for the thread. |

I can't tolerate noise either. The idea of going out where there will be people congregating/talking, makes me cringe. I always say I enjoy my own company :)
|
I have TN. Certain noises can actually cause severe stabbing like spasms in my ear. My audiologist actually removed certain freguencies from my hearing aids due to this.
|
Yep. Ditto.
And I used to be the one making all the noise. Mooseasaurus Rex= Big and loud. I have to tell my sons to lower thier voices. Used to DJ at clubs. The louder the better. Don't know if it's the M.S. or just getting old.:o |
Last night I had to go to my parents house with my DH and DD. My DH had to help my father with his tvs. There were 3 tvs going, my father talking, my mother talking, my DD skipping through the room chatting away. Then my father asks me to call the cable company and ask a question. After we left and got to Lowe's for a little shopping, my DD had to hold my hand because I felt so dizzy and disoriented from all that noise!!
|
Me too!! I definitely think it's the MS. Before my last relapse, I wasn't like this at all. I can barely carry on a conversation with more than one person at a time :o. In the past, I loved to blast the radio in the car an now I don't turn it on at all. I really love music but now it drives me nuts! It's really embarrassing to go to a party and try to find a quiet corner somewhere. Everyone thinks I must be antisocial or something :). At home, everyone understands (most of the time ). One more reason this disease sucks :(. It's actually one of the things about MS that bothers me the most.
|
I thought it was just me because of the migraines.
I have a big family, lots of neices, several nephews. Everyone comes for all of their BDays. Now, they're bigger and many have babies of their own. It is loud. I drink. |
Sensory overload!! Ugh!! Loud, crowded restaurants and stores. I completely lose the ability to concentrate. DH and I went to a friend's birthday party. Four friends that I hadn't seen for several months approached me all at once. They were all talking to me at the same time. Add the noise from the rest of the party.......I just wanted to run out the door.

I know!! And I'm afraid people will think I'm rude...or snobby  if I tend to go off on my own but I feel like my head is going to explode if I have to stay confined in a room with too much activity or noise!! |
I've noticed noise sensitivity too. In fact, in 2003 my sx diary indicates that I was at a family picnic with my border collie and she and I got unable to tolerate the noise at the same exact time. She's so motion and noise sensitive--but I think that's most border collies--and I could always tell when she needed to get away. So it was really weird that I had the same feelings at the same time.
It's a little better now, but it's still there. I don't like a high noise level. I find it very distracting. It really IS sensory overload. But I also think that it's a processing problem in the brain. Maybe I'll ask the neuropsych that I'm seeing about that and see what he says. :) |
