Really DANGEROUS Pop-Ups..{Antivirus 2009 = fake - don't click anywhere on it}

One I was warned about and unfortunately I did click on is what LOOKS like a valid ActiveX download. It is a pale, yellow bar, looks official enough but it really screws up your computer. I had to do a total destructive Recovery because of it. I'd do a screenshot to show you but it's not there right now. I will comeback when it comes back so you can see what I'm talking about. You hear a little "Blip" when it first comes on. Just don't EVER click on it. If you want ActiveX go to the official download site and get it or if you ever try to download some JAVA site it will give you the proper and official link right there to download it.

The bogus one you do NOT want to click on is a pale yellow and goes across the top of whatever page you are on. It isn't a BOX type pop-up. I think they do this format to trick people into thinking it's ligitmate but it's NOT. It's just another Pop-Up. Here is what it says:

This site might require the following ActiveX control: 'Adobe Flash Player Installer' from Adobe Systems Incorporated'. Click here to install...

too late i alreaday crashed Wiix is right watch out for it. it got me a few weeks ago, and it does look legit

Jomar 09-19-2008 12:24 PM

what websites are you on when it pops up?
any specific ones?

Do you both have most pop ups blocked and maybe phishing filters or website filters set up?

*if you block pop ups from NT then the PM notices won't pop up for you.:)*
you can set pop up blocker to accept pop ups from specific websites that are safe.

Wiix 09-19-2008 12:38 PM

My PUBs are always ON. Only site I allow is Yahoo games.

No, this is a trick. It actually was there at my Netzero homepage last time so
you never know where it's going to show up. Just IGNORE it. You never know who paid who to allow it on their page. Everyone is out to make a buck at your expense. All these tricks have a lot of back history and lead to SOMETHING you have to buy or THINK you have to buy to fix all the problems they cause. It's like they are setting you up with a problem to lead you to something else you MIGHT buy. But there are different ways to fix things you just have to figure them out. 3 times I have HAD to do destructive recovery because there was no other way.

I find some actual Pop-Ups look different. Don't be fooled, they are ALL just pop-ups. If anything pops upon MY screen I immediately X it out. But sometimes even just clicking on that X in the upper RIGHT corner, you're screwed. It's best just to ignore them ALL. THEY ARE ALL LIES!!!!!

I can not recall where I was but it was one of my safe sites too so I was caught off gaurd

SandyC 09-25-2008 04:58 PM

Wow, I bet that was what caused my computer to crash a week ago. I lost everything. That is dangerous because many "good" sites have that pop up and it's legit. Now we don't know what's legit and not. That sucks. Thanks for the info!

I don't recall where I was either but it was a legit site. I never download from sites I don't trust.

GladysD 09-25-2008 05:51 PM

It was strange, just yesterday I was on one of my 'safe' sites and got this request. I ignored it because I've never had to use that there and now reading this, I am glad that I did.

For now on, I'm just going to go to the activex site and directly install updates...

Gosh, these scammers will stop at nothing, huh?!:icon_mad:

Wiix 09-26-2008 08:36 AM

Finally it popped up again. Here it is. The very pale yellow box above my opening page and below all my toolbars. I hope you can see it. If you can't then just tell me and I'll enlarge the screenshot:

If you are only seeing a box with a red X in it, it means imageshack is down, it should show up at some point.

Curious 09-26-2008 08:36 AM

can't see it wiix. just see a box with an X.

Wiix 09-26-2008 09:52 AM

Meh. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/im...onsb/crazy.gif Let me give it another go but unless imageshack isn't having a problem it still won't show up.

Wiix 09-26-2008 10:00 AM

Tried again and still not working. I'll try again later, sorry. :o

Thank you so much for informing us about this danger. It does look frightfully real!

I also had several problems with my computer being really slow. Turned out there was some dangerous Trojan stalling it and reading my data I tried search-and-destroy which removed the Trojan. Now there are no more problems

Wiix 10-03-2008 09:41 PM

If the image doesn't show up on your screen just click on the url under it. Like I said, imageshack has been kind of iffy lately:

Maybe it's the png extension. I don't know why they do that all of a sudden. I never had a problem posting screenshots before. :o

jprinz99 10-22-2008 12:21 AM

a bad scareware is Antivirus 2009 (microsoft). They take over and it is actually redirecting you to[removed site]and they want almost 50 bucks to fix the issue that they caused! Shuts down reliable access to your web browser , thus you can't get the patch. I had to revert and losses were painful. Lesson learned.

Be careful as it is not from the authentic MS Antivrus, but is merely masquerading as it.

weegot5kiz 10-22-2008 05:27 PM

saw a post on yahoo or aol about this dang thing this morning, so it is still out there, becareful it looks legit

Jomar 11-07-2008 12:42 AM

Antivirus 2009 = fake - don't click anywhere on it!!

I just had it pop up on my screen.

The only way i could close it was by pressing CTRL/ALT/DELETE
{opens Windows task manager}
and closing my browser by highlighting it { I was using Firefox} then pressing the End Process button.

I opened Firefox and it asked if I wanted to restore session or start a new one - I selected new one - so the AV 2009 would not pop back up again.

info- Antivirus 2009 removal - if you accidentally click on it and it installs...
