New Daily Insights thread, the gabbiest place in town

welcome yall

who moi 09-20-2008 12:45 PM

I might as well get a word in while I can....:D

Wassssuppppp!!!

OK, will probably be my last...LMAO....

have a good weekend, folks. :)

CayoKay 09-20-2008 12:51 PM

ahhhhhh, I love a good gab-fest!

now y'all know why they called me Chatty Cathy when I was leetle.

:D

my update, we just sold Curly to a neighbor...

today is Belize's BIRTHDAY, and celebration feasts are being prepared...

he weighed in at just under 10 lbs... and went for $60... good deal!

he had a bad case of angel wing (deformed, genetic) so we couldn't keep him for breeding stock...

alas, Curly, I will miss you...

:o

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 01:07 PM

so are they gonna keep curly for a house pet:rolleyes:

or is this curlys fate?

howdy moi you should stop in more often

Kitty 09-20-2008 01:12 PM

Kay, sorry to hear about Curly. :( There's no way I could ever survive off "the land" so to speak. No critter (cow, duck, bunny, pig, etc.) would ever be killed for their meat. I'm too much of a softie. :o I'd just end up on a farm full of old, feeble animals.....sorta like a geriatric barnyard!

Thanks for starting a new thread for Insights, Frank. Gosh, it seemed like we went through the other one in record time!

I'm still not feeling up to par so I'm just piddling around the house, cleaning out drawers, shredding old documents that are no longer needed, etc. I have a bunch of coupons that need to be filed. I guess I could finish the book I'm reading, too.

Matt is at a local festival working with the Right to Hike group they formed shortly after Meredith Emerson's death by psycho-man Gary Hilton (who deserves the death penalty X10 IMHO). Take a look at my home page for more info on this group. Kevin is up at Jessica's due to the fact that he was "volunteered" by someone who shall remain nameless (hint....this person is very loud!!) to help paint a building that is being built in their backyard.   Someone help me...I can't quit rolling my eyes!!

The weather here is beautiful. Crisp, cool mornings and warm afternoons (high 70's).

Barb, you and I should be weather ladies!!

I just looked over towards the window and Tigger is lying flat of his back in the sunny windowsill with his hind legs crossed....he looks like he's in a recliner reading or something!! :D

Hope everyone is having a good Saturday!

um, I didn't ask.

but since he's six months old, he'll start the mating dance soon, and his defect will be passed on to offspring.

oh, and we're glad we sold him, we'd have a REALLY hard time eating him...

Kell, it's a lot harder to deal with meat, and take it from the barnyard to the table.

but... (and this is a HUGE but!) we KNOW for sure, everything the animal ate, how it was cared for, how sanitary the area is, and (I let my husband do it) a quick merciful end.

some of our inspiration for wanting to do this came from reading the book - Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser:

Schlosser discusses his findings on meat packing companies IBP, Inc. and ConAgra and on Kenny Monfort. Schlosser also recounts the steps of meat processing and reveals several hazardous practices unknown to many consumers, for example, the practice of rendering dead pigs and horses and chicken manure into cattle feed. Schlosser notes that practices like these were responsible for the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, aka Mad Cow Disease), as well as introducing into the food supply harmful bacteria, such as E. coli.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Food_Nation

we were appalled and horrified at the treatment of animals in the "efficient" and "modern" meat processing industry.

since we didn't want to become vegetarians, we opted to take responsibility for our own food, rather than leave it to greedy corporations.

Ummmm, Kelly?!? That better be 1 big farm. Animals do procreate. :D There would young 'uns and old 'uns and ones in between.

It would be hard for me too. Heck, I can't even kill the fish I catch nor can DBF. We are catch and release fisherman. LOL

No......my farm would be for wimmen critters only! Just need one man (person) to do all the dirty work (ie, trash, feeding, cleaning up, yard work, etc.). :D :D

You're doing it the right way, Kay. I just know me.....and the first time it came time for "it" to be done I'd be a wimpering blob on the floor!! :o I'm sure I'd get used to the idea over time...but it'd take me a while!

My sister and BIL purchased an Angus Bull with some neighbors (years ago) and kept it on their property to tend to until it was "time". Their plan was to share the meat. My sister cried for days beforehand...just knowing what was going to happen. She had mistakenly befriended the bull and fed it a few times. I don't think she ate any of the meat they got from him.

CayoKay 09-20-2008 04:02 PM

there's another big reason I do this, even though I'm a soft-hearted animal lover, well, two reasons.

when you have to do all the plucking and stuff, you realize the work behind it, it doesn't just come in nice neat packages, and with all that work, one tends to eat less meat, so that's probably healthier.

also, we worried about the effects of bacteria in store meat (remember all the scares?), and how that might easily make my MS sx worse.

oddly enough, our theorizing proved TRUE, and I feel generally better than I have since the late 90's, eating healthier has long-term benefits too, we hope.

this "lifestyle" has done more for me and my MS than all the meds ever did.

:cool::):cool:

FinLady 09-20-2008 04:10 PM

:You-Rock: Thanks for starting the next thread Frank.

Just resting up right now. Still a little run down. No fever. (checked after my last  moment. :D). Just blah still.

But did stock up on a bookstore run. ;) Next book for Christopher Paolini's Inheritance series came out today. LOL, hubby's next to me reading it.

Kay, the facts of farming don't bother me too much. Grew up near cow country. Nothing like having a friends mother ask you to look for a small package labeled "bessy" in the freezer. (yes, true story) My brother was also a member of 4H, so learned a lot about it through him as well.

yes, it takes a while... been two years, and it's still kinda hard...

mi esposo is very considerate of my tender feelings.

I set up the chairs, and start the pot of water heating, and stuff, and he brings in the chicken, already 'done' dips it in hot water to loosen the feathers, and we sit and chat while we pluck, or listen to music.

then, I do the fine work (pin feathers) and make it pretty, like it looks in the store, while he goes and fetches the next bird.

and he does the "dressing" and I do the packing, leaving the bits I like for soup-making (like giblets and necks).

so I don't have to deal with the difficult parts, bless his heart.

It didn't bother me.....btw, where is it??? I know I saw a pic before....maybe it was in another thread? We're all a little "off key" here, Frank.....with defects, too!! Good thing we aren't ducks, huh?! :D :p

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 04:47 PM

I deleted it, kind of worried it might of hurt Kays feelings, like i said i had assumed it would be a din din, and then she said how she will miss curly, so after I took my foot out of my mouth I deleted it

probably it'll be dinner for my neighbors...

hey, today's a REALLY big day around here!

http://www.belizeanjourneys.com/feat...c/CRW_2708.jpg

September is a festive time of year in Belize. People all over the country gather at public venues to enjoy entertaining and educational performances in honor of two very important national holidays in the month of September. These are the Battle of St. George's Caye Day- September 10th and Independence Day- September 21st. It is tradition in Belize for celebration to begin at the beginning of September and continue through Independence Day, extending festivities to almost three weeks.

http://www.septembercelebrations.com/

oh, and there's a HUGE parade going by right NOW...

all the children in their school uniforms, smiling beautifully, marching bands, and celebrations.

flags waving, and people singing and dancing...

we sold a dozen chickens today, and four ducks for fancy family dinners.

today was our biggest sales day ever !!

:cool::winky:

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 05:04 PM

Vonn07 09-20-2008 06:42 PM

howdy maties ...

yep - I'm feeling a bit peachy today ... started out a bit oozy, but had some toast.... which kept me going until an hour ago, then had some tater tots and shrimp ... feel pretty good anyways! whew!

had a most beautiful sunset last night - orange and pink ... which made today most beaut-i-mous!

I feel a bit bad - today is the last day that the local quilt shop will be open ... so I stopped in for some supplies (50% off) ... a friend gave me her old digital camera ... I need to get a memory card (kodak camera) ... then I can start getting my album loaded for you all to see!

hope you're feeling better, Kelly ...

thanks for starting a new chatterbox, Frank ....:D

Kay - my friends own and operate a dairy farm ... I've had hamburger all the time :p... from when they had to put down a cow ... the baby calves and bulls were sold to a local farm ..

Hiya Jenn - the Reds just beat the Brewers! booo hooo!

:D:eek::D

me soooo tired!

Vonny, it's always sad when a place you love closes.

yeahbut 09-20-2008 07:14 PM

Hi everyone! I can't believe it is startover time already...

Vonn - this morning David asked how I was and my reply was "I am peachy".... to funny!

well, tonight I am very sore - we went to David's moms house today and loaded the back of the truck with firewood and cut some more to dry over there that we will get next time. My right arm is in quite a bit of pain.... my legs are not that bad though so that is good.

I know tomorrow I will regret helping but I felt that I should since it will keep me warm also!

Kelly hope you are feeling better! Sounds like you had a busy day.

Kay - the celebration sounds like a lot of fun!

Frank thanks for starting the new thread.

Fin - is that book like a journal?

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 07:39 PM

cool Jim and Sandy should of had a good time, their sons school team totally kicked tail, winning 48-3, cool, just saw it on the bulldogs game

FinLady 09-20-2008 07:42 PM

Char, no. It's a fantasy story. Eragon was the first one in the series. Kind of about a boy and his dragon. I just can't spell the title of this one for the life of me. :D

Vonn, not a big baseball fan, so didn't notice the game. :o I do follow football though, and my team is usually the underdog. Can you tell I grew up in NY if I say I've liked the Bills forever? I think we hold the record for the most consecutive superbowls lost by any single team. :D

Kay, that must be neat with all the celebrations going on. Glad you had a good sale day. :)

Frank, no worries here.

snoozie 09-20-2008 07:46 PM

My son (15) will be going deer hunting next month for the first time and I am still having a hard time wrapping my mind around it.

Now don't get me wrong, my dad was a hunter as is my husband and yes I do eat the venison. But something about my son shooting a deer is hitting me strange. All the men in the family hunt and are all outdoorsmen so it is no surprise that he wants to hunt also.

He is really excited about going and I think most of this is me not wanting him to grow up just yet. I try to think about how proud his Grandpa would be to see him doing this. My dad was an amazing hunter and my hubby went with him every year till he passed.

Anyway, talk of killing animals for food made me want to share what I have been thinking about lately...Sue

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 08:10 PM

hello Sue, He is probably very excited, being able to be in, what i could understand him as seeing a special group, I can understand his excitement, do you think the actual hunt and kill will sit with him? or turn his stomach, so to say.

I know this would trouble me with my one son, the idea of it is ok but I am sure it would not sit well with him, when it came time to doing what needed be done. Prayers for ya, so you dont go bonkers with worry:hug: I dont know what to say, I can understand your feelings, guess as long as he respects the rifle, enjoys it, and gives him and dad time together, he at a good age to still want to be with dad, which is good, good luck mom dont worry too much:hug:

Fin is it this one Inheritance Cycle? or Brisingr

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 08:18 PM

I posted that one wanted to get my answer or thoughts out for sue

barb02 09-20-2008 08:18 PM

Hi Sue, Good to see you here!

Kelly, Hope you are feeling better this evening. I am addicted to the weather channel. Right now it is thundering, and we have had some heavy rain. I think it is supposed to be in the low 80s most of this week. We all still waiting for Fall weather here.

Frank, I thought the picture was funny.

Kay, I love reading about the traditions and way of life in Belize.

Char, Hope you did not overdo it today. Take it easy tomorrow.

Vonn, Glad you had a decent day. Have you gone to the doctor's about your tummy issues? You might try prilosec. You should take it in the morning about an 1/2 before you eat anything.

I have been taking it easy today. I did a little laundry, read, and stared at my ceiling fan. I just finished watching Ms. Potter from NetFlix. It was okay. The next movie in my queue is Sex in The City. I missed it at the theater. I think it is supposed to be released next week. You would love them Frank!:D More chick flicks!

Blues Girl 09-20-2008 08:35 PM

Heya Frank! Thanks for starting the thread again!!:)

Hi Char! I hope you didn't overdue yourself.

Kelly, feel better soon! I'm glad you got yourself to the doctor yesterday!:hug:

Kay, the celebrations must have been way fun! Glad you had a good day with sales!

Jenn, my game is football too. My team has been the underdog for too long..... the St. Louis Rams. Since they won the SB in 2000, they just haven't been able to get it together. I love 'em anyway!:D

Trish, you had asked me how it feels to be the mystery woman at DH's work. It feels great! I'm the only woman playing the pickem game....and tied for first. DH said they're razzing him about it........funny!:D:p

I'm feeling better again today. I actually felt well enough to get out of the house. My mom had some things to do today, so I tagged along. It felt good to be out of the house. I bought a pretty fall wreath for my front door and a really cool centerpiece for my kitchen table. Had a good time, but I am so pooped now.

Hugs to everyone!:grouphug:

Hi Frank and thanks for replying about the hunting. I really don't know how he will handle the actual process. He is more of a man than I want to admit ya know, he is my youngest.

I feel for ya on the hand pain. I use plastic cups most of the time because the glass ones are too heavy plus I have dropped a few in my day. For my coffee I wrap my fingers around it with the fingers in the handle so if I lose my grip it doesn't fall all the way.

A good cup of coffee sounds real good right now. Daughter is working at Starbucks so she brings home the good stuff all the time...Sue

weegot5kiz 09-20-2008 09:05 PM

Sue what are you fretting about? your son having a gun? what are you questioning?, if you dont mind if you dont want to, its cool, just wondering what is troubling you

Momma's Kids 09-20-2008 09:11 PM

Well...since it is getting past my bedtime...I will bid you all a good night...

Tomorrow is another day, with bright new adventures on the way...
Sleep tonight in your bed warm, wonderful dreams in your mind swarm...
Goodnight, sleep well, tonight...tomorrow is another day.

Oh goody, a new thread.

Hi Everybody, :)

Today I slept late, hooray!! Got out of bed at 11am and did my two hours of vegging activities. That consists of taking my Nexium with water (have to wait an hour to eat then.) Making my oatmeal, take my pills, freshen up. Check my email, play with Rocky, etc...

I took half a Provigil today, hoping to get off my behind and get some stuff done. I paid bills, then ate lunch. Played computer games a bit to relax. Then started housework. I swept and mopped the floors, dusted the house well with the feather duster, then vacuumed the house.

I also went out to fill the birdbaths, water the outdoor plants, fill the bird feeder and put the plastic guards on my two newest trees.

It was 6:30pm when I finished, time to shower and go out for Mexican food. :p

Now, here I am with a glass of wine, listening to Law & Order and visiting my favorite forum with the best people. :grouphug:

All in all, an excellent day! And the weather is beautiful here in N. Illinois!

FranksAngel 09-20-2008 10:35 PM

KarenMarie 09-20-2008 10:57 PM

Parenting is not what it was cracked up to be - too many influences out there now - our sons are 37 and 40 and still I worry - usually with good reason - and all my mother had to worry about was whether I was going to get home on time - times are certainly changing -
