Thank you Frank!

Without you, I may not have known that New Brunswick could potentially get smacked in the next 24 hours by a hurricane.

THIS should be interesting.

Running out this afternoon to get jar candles, flashlight and batteries.. good thing I have a lot of non-perishables already to keep my tummy full! Lots of bottled water too!

Don't worry about my safety. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the storm. I'm in a well built brick building on the second floor, on a higher elevation of land than some places in town. Not prone to flooding here. Plus, our electrical is in the "hospital grid", so when it goes out, it's one of the first back on. :)

yeahbut 09-27-2008 01:59 PM

I am so sorry Laura - for some reason I thought you were near Quebec and not on the other side!! I am so sorry - I would of warned you!

Please keep safe! I hear NB is going to get it worse than we are here in Maine!

SandyC 09-27-2008 02:12 PM

Oh trust me, that was YEARS of delicate work.

I'm just glad I'm not in Saint John NB, that's going to be MESSY there.

dmplaura 09-27-2008 05:22 PM

Oh yeah, on the topic of weather here... this is 50cm of snow, 100KM/hr winds last winter. City was back and running the day after. We handle this stuff like pros :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppiSaYJf22k

(they're saying 110km/hr gusts on the news for the hurricane, that's not THAT much more!)

This guy's channel has TONS of videos (some are of accidents, be warned) of my city. He's been on disability since an accident himself since 06, and this is what he does now, freelance. He's often there before any other media. He used to drive a taxi around the city, so he knows the short cuts well.

I actually met him the other day, and he took me driving for 4 hours to get pictures of the fall colors. VERY nice guy, funny as heck. A lot of attention has been on him recently for his 'work' that he puts up on Youtube. He's got television companies approaching him for his videos.

I don't even watch the news, I watch for videos on this guy's channel now :)

Riverwild 09-27-2008 05:32 PM

YACK!!

I just remembered that the generator is still at the island! What time does it get dark around here now, Yabbit? I may have to do a run over! LMFAO!

We don't have any wind and rain won't kill me, but the fog is rolling in...

ahhh...the heck with it. We already cleaned up the yard when we were supposed to have the last big blow a few weeks ago. Unless the track changes, we will be fine.

Yabbit, however, looks like she may be a leetle bit closer to the track - if it stays on the projected track. If it veers just a leetle bit left - it's me.

Yabbit is only 40 or so miles from me. That's how close the line is! Ms Laura up there in N.B. is off to the left of the track too...350+ miles northeast of us...and maybe closer to the actual storm track than either of us in Maine!

That's my report!:p

yeahbut 09-27-2008 05:33 PM

We are ready here to Laura. I went to the grocery store and by the time I left it was packed!!! News was getting out.....

stay safe and keep in touch when you can!

yeahbut 09-27-2008 05:36 PM

RW - now why would you leave that at camp?? Silly RW!

we are all set - bought some pop tarts just in case! :p

Bring it on Kyle! We are ready and waiting....

as Laura said, we have Nor' Easters that come through here worse than Kyle - gosh I sure am glad this is rain and not SNOW! We would be barried.

dmplaura 09-27-2008 05:37 PM

I had to laugh at the grocery store here.

The aisle with the candles was pretty much vacant, so I grabbed a couple of those nice ones in jars (I'm a paranoid FREAK with fire).

Meanwhile... the junk food aisle and the aisle where you buy stuff for mixing alcoholic beverages were PACKED.

That's Canada! LMAO!

yeahbut 09-27-2008 05:43 PM

they were just starting to really pack the store when I was there.... I was laughing too!

17 years since Maine had a Hurricane watch!

Since I've lived here, I was in Halifax during 1 hurricane (downed trees on Barrington, eeeeeeeshhhh!!!) and I was around for the big hurricane a few years ago (but not in Hali, in Moncton).

This is my first in MY city. :D

SandyC 09-27-2008 05:53 PM

You guys almost sound excited. lol

Seriously, stay safe and dry!

Rofl at the aisles in the store, Yabbit!
We are set here too. No need to run out and get anything.

I was actually living on the island during Gloria (the hurricane we had back in 1985). My mother made me come home and stay with her. We sat at the kitchen table drinking homemade wine and watched one of our huge blue spruces go down...it took three gusts and it was gone. We tried to stand it up the next day by pulling with a chain and the boat, but she wouldn't stand...ahh the memories!

Here's my addition to Laura's map!

yup - that's us!! David just said we are just about 20 - 25 off the coast. He is talking to a friend of his who lives right on the Coast of Maine!

we are excited, Sandy!! Don't get stuff like this up here to often!

dmplaura 09-27-2008 05:59 PM

Nice job with Paint RW!

I think we're somewhat or VERY excited. I don't know about Maine, but in New Brunswick, it's all about the weather. We get excited like kids during these Nor'Easters and "weather bombs" in the winter.

Like Yeahbut said, been a LONG time since a hurricane hit this area. I think my super said the last for Moncton was in 1973.

dmplaura 09-27-2008 06:25 PM

Oh I feel so terrible for Nova Scotia now :(

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/warnings/ns_e.html

Looks like they're going to get hit worse than we will. I have a friend in Digby (he's actually an American, up visiting his parents who moved to Nova Scotia a couple years ago). He's pretty excited, but this could be bad for those on the coast.

I do hope if we have any from Nova Scotia on NeuroTalk that they're taking extra extra special precautions. :grouphug:

I don't know about that, Laura. The map I saw shows it as a TS in St John and then becoming a hurricane 1, again.. Are you north of St John??

Stay safe..

North East! Should be a doozy!

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forec...mages/nb_e.jpg

(I'm in Moncton .. really close to both PEI and Nova Scotia actually!.

SallyC 09-27-2008 06:48 PM

Sorry, I read that wrong... It remains a Tropical storm from St John, on up..

dmplaura 09-27-2008 06:50 PM

Well if you want my honest opinion... I'm thinking the outcome is going to be:

If it hits NB/NS as a hurricane, it will remain a hurricane up to us. That's all warmer water that it can gather from as it travels up that path.

That's why Moncton gets dumped on with snow TERRIBLY during the winter (and I so very much love it!!).

Riverwild 09-27-2008 06:55 PM

Ayuh, the Gulf Stream runs right by us all and the water is warm this time of year.

That's why it may intensify depending on where the track goes. A few miles west and we are gonna have us some FUN!

yeahbut 09-27-2008 07:14 PM

It just came across the Marine Weather Service that they whole of Penobscot Bay is under a Huricane Warning..... that includes us here! 74+ mph winds! It has taken that small turn to the west that you predicted RW.....

Batten down the hatchets my friends it could be a wild ride!

Laura, it was Miramichi that we went racing not Fredericton - Fredericton is where my Grandmother is from - there is a statue there somewhere with "Steves" written on it - that was my Gr. Grandmother's father!

dmplaura 09-27-2008 07:17 PM

I've actually never been to Miramichi. Definitely Shediac and seen the giant lobster! I hope his antenna (if that's the word for them) don't fall off in the wind tomorrow ROFL!!

weegot5kiz 09-27-2008 08:09 PM

yall be careful still these storms lately have been bigger than they first thought they would be, lately

I know!

We're kinda sick up North here, but you need not worry about us in Maine/Atlantic Canada. We're used to these types of storms, wind and rain.

Heck, I think we get these normally, just never officially called "hurricane" or typical terms.... hence, "weather bomb" (my personal favorite!).

yeahbut 09-28-2008 08:09 AM

It is raining from the "other" storm hard this morning, from what I can tell Kyle hasn't even gotten here yet!

My internet dies when it rains to hard so I am trying to quickly check in before it dies again! (I have been trying this for 20 mins)

all is well here....

SandyC 09-28-2008 08:14 AM

Char I just saw your area on the news. They said it should be hitting your area by tonight. But now your saying it's already raining hard so be careful.

It's been raining for a couple of days actually. We had some hard rain last night but it isn't Kyle yet.

I am closer to Bar Harbor - so if you hear them talking about that area that would be me!! We are about 20 miles off shore though so that is good.

When I was looking this morning it doesn't look like it is going to come inland at all. I guess we will see tonight!

MSCherokee 09-28-2008 08:41 AM

Wow, I must've been in a sleep induced coma yesterday - had no idea this was headed your way.

Sending lots of thoughts and prayers out to everyone in the path of the storm. Please take care of yourselves and check in when you can. :grouphug:

dmplaura 09-28-2008 10:33 AM

I woke up to hear my maple tree outside my bedroom window's leaves rustling in the wind. Hehe!

It's actually very calm out today. For the moment. But we won't be 'hit' by anything really till tonight.

Now go figure my colposcopy doc appointment is tomorrow... I bet nothing will result in canceled appointment, or so I hope. I want that one taken care of asap :)

weegot5kiz 09-28-2008 10:47 AM

:yikes: especially if you do the prep, for me that was the hardest part and for a number of others too.

hopefully, dare I say it, hopefully it will pass:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

yeahbut 09-28-2008 10:48 AM

good news for Maine

it has taken a Eastern turn and we are not going to get hardly anything at all...... guess all the excitement for nothing!

oh well, I am sure in another 17 years we might get another one!

yeahbut 09-28-2008 11:23 AM

Davids mom just called said CNN is reporting storm is going to hit Bangor with 75 mph winds! but, everything we are looking at says NO it is going easterly.....

ok, to clarify Davids mom is 70 years old - I love her right to death but I think she got her story completely wrong!

dmplaura 09-28-2008 12:13 PM

I don't know WHAT this storm's doing LOL! I was watching Weather Network here in Canada, and they're tracking this beauty 24/7. It still appears that Nova Scotia is going to feel the brunt of it, but they list Fredericton in the heavy rainfall category, while Moncton's in the 30-50mm category.

If that's all we're getting, pfft. That's not much of a storm!

Bay of Fundy area is going to get rocked (like a hurricane, literally).

^^ There's a song I haven't heard in a while!!!
