Pathology from hysterectomy

My surgeon told me they would do a 'frozen section'. For those of you that don't know this, a pathologist gets a section of the uterus, does a quick biopsy and tells the surgeon whether he sees cancer in THIS section of tissue. If he does then the surgeon proceeds to the next step which would have been lymph node biopsy. If negative, they finish up and you are on your way out the door.

So the day after my surgery, he comes and sits on my bed...I just hate it when a docotr sits on your bed, what bed had ne been sitting on right before he came to your room, what germs...anyway he tells me that frozen section was negative and see me in 6 weeks.

So all my family have been asking me what the pathology was. You have to remember that my sister had jsut had extensive breast cancer surgery and we are all on pins and needles. So i decide to call surgeons office and ask them. I get to talk to his nurse and she tells me the pathology was cancer!!!!!:eek: She says it's encapsulated, which is very good.

So was this guy who I thought was a reallly nice surgeon just going to wait until 6 weeks and then tell me it was surgery? What happened to the lymph node biopsy? Is there going to be anything done for staging since there were no lymph nodes removed?

So I think I am going to call his office on Monday and ask to see him before the 6 weeks check up to get this report. Of course on Monday they start the remodel on my family room and there goes my sleeping hours:eek:

Wow, Doydie, how frightening!

Did that nice surgeon think he was protecting you by not telling you the whole truth? Sheesh.

Encapsulated does sound good, but why didn't he tell you?

I'd much rather know so I can have time to wrap my head around it.

I wish you well, Doyd. It's gonna be a long 6 weeks, isn't it?

I hope your sister will be okay.

And good luck with the remodel.

Doydie,

I hope you can get in to see the surgeon next week, if for nothing else than to set your mind at ease. Try not to worry too much. It's possible the nurse even misinterpreted it?

azoyizes 10-19-2008 07:13 AM

Doydie, I hope you can get the results quicker than six weeks and that everything is fine. It's so hard to wait on something like that.

I can't believe the surgeon sat on your bed to talk with you. Should be bedside manner, not on-the-bed manner. :)

Good luck with the remodeling.

Is that all he said? Did he go into any details? Seems like he may have left some stuff out. I'd be calling the office and get some details of what exactly he meant by "negative."

I hope you get some answers.

braingonebad 10-19-2008 02:17 PM

I'm so sorry they left you with more questions than answers - especially given the circumstances.

I hope you get to the bottom of it quickly and the *negative* part was the right answer.

GladysD 10-19-2008 03:42 PM

I hope you are able to get some answers soon

Kitty 10-19-2008 03:50 PM

I totally shocked that the nurse would even tell you something like that over the phone!

I'd be asking some real pointed questions come Monday morning. Somebody's not in the loop.

Good luck....and I hope the nurse was the one who was wrong.

FranksAngel 10-19-2008 05:12 PM

i would definitely be calling the nice doctor tomorrow and asking for some answers ... and i have always found that when a doctor sits on the bed the news is usually not what i wanted to hear ... i hope everything is ok

DM 10-19-2008 06:32 PM

Hey Doyd~ I agree w/Kelly; didn't think Nurses or office staff could give that info out over the phone. And, I would definitely be calling their office right away tomorrow to find out the real scoop.

You know I'll be thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers.

Yeah I'm calling the office tomorrow. I am definetely not a morning person. My night usually ends up around 1 AM and the day starts at 10 or 11 AM. So getting up tomorrow at 7 is not good for me. I remember not so fondly what I was like a month ago when this scam artist did his job on us and I got up every monring to wait for him and he not show up. I just hope this compnay is on time enough and I feel I can leave the house while they are here. So i will have plenty of time to call the office.

Plus since our state has early voting I am going to our local library along with my sister to vote. Tomorrow is pretty much her last day she will feel like voting for a while.

Doydie, I hope you get some answers.... what that nurse did was totally unappropriate!

Jappy 10-20-2008 07:00 PM

I hope you get the answere Monday. I never heard of a nurse
giving out information like that, especially over the phone.

Maybe she was reading the wrong report. Will pray she was.
The dr should have told you what was really wrong when he came and
sat on your bed.

SandyC 10-20-2008 07:20 PM

Doydie, I am praying what he meant was that you were negative for any kind of spreading or something like that. Encapsulated is a good thing so maybe they felt they got it all before it had reached a stage of concern? Either way, he should have told you and I pray he didn't read the wrong chart. :yikes:

NurseNancy 10-20-2008 09:46 PM

doydie,

doesn't sound like your dr was being honest with you.
i'd be pretty ****** off about that.
you're right to demand the truth. how else can you plan YOUR care.

i pray it's contained and noninvasive like mine was.
good luck.

doydie 10-20-2008 10:36 PM

I called the office today. I had already done some internet research to determine the different stages of endometrial cancer. Cancer cells in the endometrium alone and encapsulated is stage 1. Any further down into the uterus is 2,3,4,etc. Mine is 1. I am still anxious to talk to my doctor about it but am willing to wait until the 6 weeks check up.

AfterMyNap 10-20-2008 10:46 PM

Sorry, Doyd, I've been away for awhile so I'm trying to catch up on things. I agree with the others, I hope you'll have a chance to speak personally with the doctor. No nurse has ever told me anything by phone, she may have overstepped her boundaries and your doc should know about this.

It's hard to imagine a doctor snowing you in this day and age of recreational lawsuits; you really need to hear his side of this story.

I sure hope your family room will come together perfectly and quickly, you deserve it.

SandyC 10-21-2008 10:45 AM

I agree with Cindy, that information should never have been given over the phone by anyone. Call the doctor and request him to call you back personally. He should be able to straighten this all out. That nurse should never have disclosed something like that over the phone. That could have been anyone calling. No matter what, I pray it's nothing to be worried over.
