Dealing with the Blues

(Psych Central News) The events that have occurred over the past few weeks have been emotionally charged. Now the election is over and reality sets in. Days are shorter and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is already here for many. “This is the time of the year when people are vulnerable to depression anyway,” said Dr. Thomas Nutter, [...]

I used to really have a terrible time with S.A.D. and kept getting sick and treated for depression back in the Midwest but since we retired and moved to Arizona I am doing better.

I am wondering if those lights which are advertised for S.A.D. would help?

I know I like lots of light and dread getting out of bed before the sun rises. First thing I do is open every curtain and blind in the house and let the sunshine in!

Abbie 11-07-2008 09:51 PM

I have a SAD light... it works pretty good if I remember to put it in my lamp... Then I have to remember to use that lamp...

Also... I can't use it all the time as it is bright and tends to give me a headache... i'm migraine sensitive to bright lights.

I take it out in the summer... no need to burn it year round.

:o

I must be solar powered because if it is a bright sunny day I do so well but if the clouds come out or it rains (which is rare here) I just get really down.

Alffe 11-08-2008 07:53 AM

Abbie let's you and I move out of the midwest to Arizona. :D

AZjanie 11-08-2008 11:39 AM

Even a pretty day can't lift me out of the dumps....I got my feelings hurt a while back and have been hurting ever since. I just can't seem to shake this yet. I am way too sensitive and wish I weren't because it would make my life a lot easier!

Seems anytime someone says something to me that isn't nice I just keep replaying it over and over. I should have said something because maybe they didn't mean to be so harsh...yeah right.

The good news is since I have had so much trouble sleeping I finished all the magazines I'd put off reading so I am taking them to the Nursing Home today!

Alffe 11-08-2008 02:49 PM

I'm guilty of the same thing...replaying things over and over. Why do we do this to ourselves?!! It really gives things an importance they don't deserve...life is short.....but how to stop??? :o

Do you get O magazine...they take forever to read. *grin

I can have the car packed and ready soon....:D

Sure is cold and gray here today.... brrrr...

Nik-key 11-09-2008 12:48 AM

My husband Lynn and Dad always suffered with what we in the hicks called cabin fever. Now, I find out it could have been SAD. Lynn also has Alzheimer's, daylight savings time is brutal on him! I did buy those special lights awhile back. They are truly helping him with both his sundowning and the time change.

Az, I too have a constant rewind in my brain. I need to learn how to hit pause, or better yet erase! ;)

And hey, you got room for one more in that car ? :D

Alffe 11-09-2008 06:34 AM

There's always room for one more Nik....:D Second grey day in a row here...and rain mixed w/snow....so it begins. ~sigh

Wren 11-09-2008 07:37 AM

When you're driving west through MO .... PLEASE stop and pick me up

Alffe 11-09-2008 08:34 AM

How will we know you? Oh yeah, that heart thing. *grin :grouphug:

Wren 11-09-2008 08:41 AM

Yeah -- the heart thing on my butt .... and I'll be the one running out to meet you :p

And my bags will be full of CHOCOLATES

Alffe 11-09-2008 09:16 AM

Abbie...we'd better get a van! :D And I've invited BJ. :grouphug:

BJ 11-09-2008 09:46 AM

I'm in for a road trip. Anything to get away from this dreary damp weather. Today is the first day the sun has been out since Monday.

I even have some chocolates that might lure the monkey out :D

AZjanie 11-09-2008 10:39 AM

We had sprinkles this morning which we haven't seen for months. The sun is shining so we have a pretty rainbow. :)

It has been in the 60's so a bit chilly for us cold weather wimps here. It will be in the 70's starting Thursday so get a respite from the cold.

The "snow birds" are here now and the natives here are in coats complaining about the cold and the "birds" are in short sleeves grateful for the warmer weather!!

Come on down and bring some leaves.

Alffe 11-09-2008 12:55 PM

I think the monkey's busy making bears...Cookies look delicious BJ...

Now AZ....I have plenty of leaves...big red maple leaves . :D http://photography.nationalgeographi...-523359-sw.jpg

Abbie...you did agree to drive...right?

Abbie 11-09-2008 01:10 PM

Ok.. need to borrow a van....

Sure I'll drive...as long as we have cruise control....:D

Even if our monkey pal can't come with... I'm sure we can squeeze in a visit...:D

(wow...if only... would be so much fun!!!)

Abbie

Alffe 11-09-2008 03:13 PM

Alffe 11-11-2008 07:19 PM

Gosh Abbie, I really like the one with the awning but I think you should make a poll so we could all vote. :D

And Janie...did you win anything? Have you stocked up on dog food? :D

And Abbie, I think you ought to make a mapquest....it gets confusin....

mistiis 11-12-2008 04:38 PM

.....hhhmmmmmm, I've been watching the plans develop here :D Alffe, you may need someone who can make tea and muffins *wink I can do that...me....me...me...me..ppllllleeeeaaaasssseeee ee....Of course, I realize I will have to get on a plane...hmmmmmmm...I wonder where I could get picked up along the way???????

Alffe 11-12-2008 04:47 PM

There's always room for one more but I'm still waiting for Abbie to make a poll....maybe BJ will let us use her GPS. We have to go to New Hampshire, Mo, swing by Texas, and I have no idea where Toad Hollow is...maybe you should just meet us in AZ....:D Nah, I want the muffins along the way.

Wren 11-12-2008 07:56 PM

Dump It

I'm going to interrupt and tell what I started to post this afternoon ..
I decided I should get out of the way .... (I'm always in the way) I should just write a cheerful note saying that I would get in my little pick-up and make the trip alone - no problem :)
Then I thought that maybe someone/anyone would think they should say I could ride with them or they could ride with me and, of course, that would ruin their trip so there would be silence ..... long silence. Then the nice, kind post would slowly die .... all my fault.

Well, rats.
