Do you have a hobby or activity that you'd like to share?
I'm thinking about hobbies, crafts and activities to do during the winter.
Does anyone do beading, jewelry making or that sort of thing? know of any good websites for supplies - preferably discounted/inexpensive. Maybe I'll do some quilt type wall hangings, I have a sewing machine and know how to do that. I do have my water color art supplies, but with our small house I have to get it out when I want to paint and put it away after.:( I need an office/craft room!! LOL Other ideas?? or what do you like to do or wish you could do? |
hey Jo ... if you have any craft stores (hancock, joanns, michaels) ... head to the BACK of these stores ... they have TONS of beading and supplies on clearance ... they are ALWAYS on clearance ...
and ... I have found at the General Dollar has some great supplies for scrapbooking papers ... I know there are a few gals here on NT that have a jewelry business - check out the Creative Corner ... |
Well I don't have a craft type hobby like you both do, but I have decorated some really beautiful cakes in the past.
I don't do it now, but I've decorated wedding cakes, birthday cakes ... christening cakes ..... cakes for any occssion really. I started with a Bert and Ernie (Sesame Street) birthday cake for my 2 year old daughter, and just went from there. I eventually went to classes and learnt how to do the more difficult things and I loved it when I was doing my cakes. Unfortunately MS seems to have put an end to that now. :( |
(((Ms. Koala))) !!!! That is SO surprising! Guess what my daughter's cake was for her 2nd birthday!??! Bert & Ernie! :D
|
We must be thinking alike Jo! I started a thread about holiday craft ideas. I'll be going back and forth between the two unless you want to merge them.
|
For me now that the rainy season is here .. trying to think up hobbies & projects to do.
And to see what other people like to do, or would like to do, or have ideas about.... |
I write poetry, which i post here and there on Neuro Talk, need to really buckle down proof them all organized them and try to get a book published, I have a title. "Thoughts of a Wandering Poet" like I said I need to get serious about it, it's one of those self esteem issues, dont have much faith in it ever getting published.
|
That would be so cool, to get a book of any kind published.:D
Ya never know ......:) |
Not yet..........but if anyone is interested, I'll get some of my cake photos out of my album and scan them for you to look at, when I get some time to myself!
I can't do it for a couple of weeks as there's too much happening at our house, but maybe when DH is recuperating from his surgery..... if anyone wants to see them that is. |
I would like to see them Koala. I used to decorate cakes but not anywhere near professional level.

Hi Jo,
I have never done any jewellery making but one of my mums friends does it all of the time and finds it really relaxing. She makes lovely earrings and things for us and she sells them sometimes also. I love Card Making and Scrapbooking. I find it really relaxing and nice to look at lots of pictures and then put them together into a scrapbook. It's really nice and brings back lots of good memories of me and my family on vacations etc. There's quite a lot of craft stores near us that sell things like embellishments for card making that are really cheap but good quality. When I get the chance, I make a big bundle of cards and sell them and try and raise money for charity or for something that I need such as a wheelchair etc. Speaking of craftrooms, I have turned the spare bedroom into a craft room lol. My mum gets a bit fed up of it because I leave cards and stickers all over the place lol! ] I hope you find something that you enjoy!! |
|
Thank you for that site, Bobbi.
I make my own greeting cards (rubber stamping) and I do a little jewelry making. I've only made earrings so far. Lately, I lack motivation to do much of anything, but the rubber stamping is great therapy for me. I use my guest room for my supplies. A bureau w/lots of shallow drawers works great for my supplies. Anne~ I would love to see your pics when you have the time. |

The next thing I'd like to tackle is making my own greeting cards. Every now and then I get a hand made one from a friend, and it makes me more determined to learn how to do it myself. I've even bought "hand made cards" from the local craft stores to send. Quote:

I love cake decorating! My mom took classes but gave me all her stuff. Then I worked in a bakery and learned a few tricks. I used to make all my kids's cakes and goofy ones for holidays. I made Sonic the Hedgehog, Littlest Pet shop, My Little Pony, TMNT, Yin/yang and Dora the Explorer for my grandaughter. She saw that and screamed "Dora happy birfday cake!" She didn't even want her gifts lol. Anne - I *make* my own cards... with Hallmark software on my PC. ;) This'll be the first year I do Christmas cards that way though. It was always Bday and all that. |
That sounds excellent Brain.
Seems like we have a couple of things in common then! :D |

Growing sprouts in my kitchen. It's been over 2 days, they are sprouting and the instructions on the sprouting websites, say to put them in some sunlight to get the clorophyl to start going. And they will turn green. I'll believe this when I see it. lol melody |
I like to decorate cakes & I took lessons. I put together a cake for my son's B-day that was shaped like a plane, my DB's wedding cake (nothing elaberate) & a couple cakes for my DH to take to work. For work I 1st made a lady in a skirt (the skirt was the cake). The other one was a guy (some have read this before), I used coconut on the chest & a twinky for (you know). After I made it we went to bed then when I got up & looked at it  the twinky was too big. I was embarrassed to have my DH take it to work but ended up letting him. I shoulda cut the Twinky or used a "lady finger".
DM, I like to rubber stamp too. I just finished making my Christmas cards. |
Melody .. how are your sprouts sprouting??
can't wait to see pics of the cakes and cards ... ;) |
I'm boring!
I just read something about everyone needing a hobby to help with their health.
And it occurred to me that I don't have a hobby! How can that be? As a kid I read and read, but not anymore. When I was younger I played softball and bowled on a league. But not now. I've taken several classes through the years: oil painting, tole painting, creative writing, songwriting, photography, Photoshop, stained glass, pottery making and other crafty things. But I no longer do any of them. I've pieced together a quilt top, but like the sewing more than the quilting (I don't quilt). I've crocheted and knitted a little. I like to cook, but hate the mess. Not much of a pet person, but had one of everything when I was young, including dogs, cats, birds, a sheep, a calf, a horse and a mean raccoon! I even found a baby deer and fed it for a couple of weeks until the game warden said I couldn't keep it. I play the piano, but need a reason to sit down and play. When the grandkids come over we sing songs for whatever the season is. But meanwhile, I don't have a real hobby. I'm not a gardener. I used to scrapbook, but it's too tedious. Part of my problem is that I'm a good starter, but a lousy finisher. I've got a closet of unfinished projects. :o All the activities I mentioned above don't really interest me enough to start up again. So, what to do what to do? The only thing I can think of is that I love to travel and meet interesting people. And eat. I love to eat WAAAAAY too much! I used to think that once my children grew up and left home that I'd write a musical play. I've pretty much got the songs and lyrics written, but lack training and wish I had someone to collaborate with. *sigh* Excuses, excuses. Let's face it: I'M BORING!!! |
hey Twink ... am I going to have to come out there and friendly *smack* you?? ;)
you are so considerate ... and kind ... and send out lots of postcards ... and you think of others ... you may not think it's a hobby ... but because of you, life is so much better getting to know you .. and call you friend ... you're a friendly, kind person .. thinking of others ... AWESOME hobby!!:You-Rock: |
Nu uh, Twink..You're not boring! Maybe your hobby is starting stuff..I thought I was the only one with that hobby. Maybe we should start (and not finish) a club! :D
|
I have built and finished doll houses from kits. On a yearly Garbage day (you could throw anything out - people would clean out their attics and make a big pile )and there were many unfinished dollhouses, people would start and never finish. Since I was a child I've collected minaturesfurniture and decorating items. Wall-papered. flooring, some furniture I made fromkits and scratch and furniture given to me or collected through the years. Have a doll house I used all my best stuff for one, it's really not for a child.
Did a more child friendly (less inticate, less breakable) for DD one Chritmas. Now with use of only one hand and the other not so cleaver anymore, just read. |
I make rosaries and sometimes personalize them with a name, birth date ( or baptism, confirmation date, anniversary or wedding date, etc.) - they are really popular. And all kinds of jewelry. And I write lots of poetry; 2 booklets published years ago. Or, rather, I used to write. I'm not so "inspired" anymore.....lazy, I guess. But the rosaries seem to keep me as busy as I want to be because I get orders from all over the US - and beyond. I think, right now, the last I actually sent away was to a friend of a frien in Rome. A lot of them are ordered from friends of friends and friends of friends of friends, etc. It's fun and sometimes even keeps me out of trouble. Our church has a craft show once a year and there are ALL kinds of crafts there - quilts, angels, baby "hoodies", etc. It's a lot of fun. I'm making a rosary right now with shamrock beads for a new baby girl. So cute!
