Allergic reaction and the flu? Bloating too?
Hi everyone,
Feeling sick today, and normally I wouldn't even bring it up except that I had an allergic reaction to Bactrim DS including a rash on my legs and torso. I was taking it for a UTI. I'd taken two days worth (four pills). Someone said on my other thread that sulpha allergies are common for those with penicillin allergies. I have both now. I also have muscle aches, chills and bad headache. Last night I started to bloat around my mid-section and I wasn't passing a lot of urine. So, I called the doctor this morning and he said to stop the Bactrim because it's an allergic reaction. I haven't had a flu type virus in almost 30 years. Is it sometimes accompanied by bloating and retaining water? I just hope the Bactrim wasn't hurting my kidneys. They're working better today but not passing as much liquid as before. BTW, I got some Macrobid to replace the Bactrim, but I'm not going to start it until tonight and let the Bactrim get out of my system some more. Thanks in advance for any advice... :grouphug:  |
I looked it up.
http://www.drugs.com/bactrim.html If you read thru it. and one of the side effects is urinating less or not at all...I'm guessing that might cause a little "back up" and cause bloating. |
Thanks Erin,
I'm going more and more as the day goes on so that's a relief. |
Some people say that Cipro isn't good for MS, but it works like a charm for my UTI's. Have you considered that?
I would not leave weak voiding, a bloated stomach, combined with a UTI, Ewizabeth. Get on a replacement antibiotic ASAP, keep any fever in check, and go to the hospital for a cath if you can not void properly SOON. Cherie |
:hug:Wiz, I can offer plenty of sympathy... not much advice though. I'm allergic to penicillin, sulfa drugs and Macrobid. I was told that Erythromycin was my only choice for now.
So I do everything I can to keep a UTI at bay...lots of water, cranberry tablets, and try to keep my sugar intake low(not easy around these holidays). I hope you feel better soon! tk |
Thanks TK,
Whoa! I hope I don't have an allergy to Macrobid too! Anyway, the plumbing is working now. I have a fever of almost 101 degrees. It's been many years since I had one. It feels foreign to me. I suppose it's good though, my body is fighting whatever this is. |
:hug:Wiz! Take care. High fevers are no fun. I hope the new abx start working soon and you are back to your ol' spunky self again.
|
Wiz,
I sure hope things work out. -Vic |
Me too...allergic to Bactrim, Macridid and Cipro. My Doc gave me Macrocillian(SP) the last UTI and it took longer, but did the job, along with lots of CB tabs and drink.
UTIs are yucky, especially with fever.:( Feel better, soon.. |
Wiz, my guess is your symptoms are related to the UTI and not the flu. It is possible to have both a UTI and the flu but, I'm betting you don't.
Make sure your drinking plenty of fluids. I'm hoping the Macrobid works quickly. |
Wiz, Hoping you are feeling better soon. I am also allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs.
|
Wiz, as you know Jim has had reactions to both of those meds. For him it was a matter of timing I suppose because he can now take Bactrim and Macrobid with no troubles. His reaction to Macrobid was stomach upset and nausea from not eating so make sure you eat before taking it. He had thrush with Bactrim but does fine now.
I agree with Snoopy that your symptoms do sound like a UTI and not the flu. I pray you feel better fast! UTI's suck the life out of you. |

I think you might be right. I took one Macrobid and one ibuprofen three hours ago and I feel a let better already! :) |
I also dont think flu...think sxs were a mix of the UTI..and then maybe part of the allergic reaction...glad you will be on a new med...hugsss good luck dear, sarah

Hey Wiz?
I don't have anything but hugs for ya! I have no words of wisdom since I have never dealt with a UTI. Just wanted to hop in and yell "Knock it off!" and give you a hug!!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug: |
Thanks everybody, :grouphug:
I just got up about a half hour ago, and just had my second Macrobid so if this works I should be back to normal* soon. |
Wiz, sorry you were sick but glad to hear you are feeling better!
hugs, Char |
Just be careful with the UTI and Macrobid. I used to get a lot of UTIs when younger. My PCP put me on Bactrim, I ended up allergic. Then he put me on Macrobid. The dang things kept coming back. I finally went to a urologist.
He said that he didn't understand why docs kept giving Macrobid to patients that had several UTIs over a 6-8 month period. He said it doesn't really clear up the problem in many many patients. I became a Cipro gal after that. In fact, he gave me a standing prescription for a year at a time. This was 20 years ago! Never did get UTIs much after that, only once every 2-4 years rather than 3-4 a year! So, if you get through with your Macrobid, and another UTI creeps up in the few months after, get CIPRO instead of another Macrobid. It may not work for you. |
How are you feeling today Wiz?

Yesterday my allergies were driving me nuts because I had stopped taking Nasonex for the winter. I think I'm going to need it year round because of Rocky. He likes to sit on my lap a lot and also sleep by me. Thanks for checking up on me. |
