How can i get this pc reminder thing off my screen?
All of a sudden, when I booted up my computer this morning, there is is message on my screen.
HP REMINDER Your PC contains a program that creates a set of recovery discs. blah blah blah. Then it asks me: "do you want to create a set of recovery discs? I am then prompted to choose: 1. Yes, 2. No. 3. DO NOT REMIND ME AGAIN. I tried Xing out (at the top right of this window). It would not go away. I tried choosing one of the options. It would not go away. It also looks as it only part of the message is being showed. Like an incomplete message. but the minus, plus and x are up at the top of the message. It's a rectangle box right in the middle of my destop. I can move this box all around, but I can't seem to get it of of my screen. And I did the control, alt delete thing. It brings up "HP updates....running." I clicked on "end task". It did absolutely nothing. We just ran an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program. It said Nothing was wrong. I can move that box around and access all the icons on my desktop, my outlook express, etc. I can go on the internet. I just want this stupid thing off of my screen. I tried re-booting my computer. It came back. Help....Anyone??? lol Melody |

UPDATE. here's what I just did. I went to Start, run. typed in MSCONFIG. Then I chose startup. I de-selected several things, including HP UPDATES. I then clicked on okay, and restarted. When it booted up, I got a message saying "you have chosen to run startup in diagnostic mode" ???????????? Please choose normal startup to undo any changes. then the Startup message thing appeared on the screen. I chose "normal startup" and hit okay. It then told me I had to reboot my computer. I did so. THE PC REMINDER THING CAME BACK. oh this is so annoying. mel |
Did you already make the recovery discs?
Maybe you need to make a new set now that it updated??? I would go ahead and do it just so you have them for the future if needed. you could go on to the HP site and see what it says about it, if you don't want to make the new set of recovery discs. |

So what do I do NOW??? lol Mel |
I think it would be a good idea to make the disks- it would be so much handier for you to restore your system if you ever have a major crash or hardware malfunction.
I finally did full backups of my system after my problems this summer, got tired of starting everything from scratch. My daughters laptop {hp/compaq} "told" to us right at the beginning to make restore disks. |

I have windows xp. Exactly what do I buy to make recovery discs. Can I buy a flash drive and do it? Thanks much Melody |

I have been looking into the making of recovery discs. It said to either use cd's or dvds. I have a LightSribe DVD+ writer/cd-writer. I assume this is the drive that I put the disc in. So do I buy cds, or dvds. And I don't want to buy the wrong kind because on the internet it said "sometimes the wrong kind of cd is used or the wrong kind of dvd is used. I am thoroughly confused. I understand the process of doing the recovery. You make discs, label them (for example) 1. of 8 recovery discs. you pop them in one at a time, you wait until one is finished being writed to and then it will prompt you to insert another disc. I understand this. What I don't know yet is exactly what to buy. do I buy a dvd (they say writing to a dvd is faster than a cd). So what kind of dvd do I buy? Do I go into the computer store and say "I want to make recover discs for my HP Media Center" and the guy will know what to sell me? jeez. (and that stupid reminder thing is still there). Alan just takes his mouse and keeps it on the bottom under the task bar (I think it's called the task bar). God, I feel so stupid. Melody |
I'd use the DVDs, the store should be able to help you get the right kind, take your computer manual and/or write down the - LightSribe DVD+ writer/cd-write - info - just to make sure they get you the right kind.
You might be able to save the info to a flash drive, but might be simpler to use the DVDs since that is the default set up for the system. I'm sure it takes you step by step when you do it. |
Melody,
hello, let me introduce myself. i am a techie and do comp updates and repairs and remote sessions for tech support all the time. the hp recovery disks are a good thing to have. personally i use memorex dvd-rw disk on all my hp systems and drives. go ahead and make the recoery disks and lable them with the date made and what it is and save in a protected disk holder. it should only take one disk. feel free to ask me any questions if you need help. roger. |
Roger.
thanks so much for the information. I have written everything down and will go and buy these after the Thanksgiving Holiday (Happy Turkey Day to you and yours by the way). I am always amazed that I am continually learning things about my computer. Then I go and watch a tv commercial and I really find out what I DON'T KNOW. The Blackberry's, the new phones that do EVERYTHING, and you can turn them upside down and they change format, etc. And the new phone that comes with a keyboard that CLICKS when you type. I only wish I was 25 again so I can really make use of this stuff. Everybody in my age group, either do not have a computer and do not DEFINITELY own a cell phone. They look at me like I am out of my mind when I go on my computer. To me it's the information super highway. I learn stuff every single day. I do have a question. Oh, I'd like to tell you something. You indicate that you are a tech person. I was chosen (among 300 employees), over 30 years ago, to go to IBM computer school. I had the first desktop computer (an IBM of course) and a dot matrix printer. It was so loud they had to buy a special cover for it. It did he dot matrix thing ALL DAY LONG. No one in my company would speak to me because I was the one chosen to go to computer school. Then, 2 years later, when all the other executive secretaries got their own computers, who do you think they would call us all day long and ask "What does the F10 key do, how do I set my margins. I'll never forget that time. The word processing software was known as MULTIMATE ADVANTAGE. God, this is taking me back. And the WHOLE HARDRIVE WAS 20 MGS. Can you believe this? 20 megabyte hard-drive. I had to quit my job and stay at home to care for my son, so I bought my own computer and did typing at home for a judge. Do you know what I paid for that first computer that I bought? $3,700. I will never forget that price. Times have changed, haven't they? So I wanted to let you know that you are corresponding with a genuine former computer student of the IBM company. Now for my question: "years ago, they never had viruses or anything like that. You had AOL, you went online, you had fun. Now I have to watch out every single day for spyware, malware, adware, this ware and that ware, and let's not forget that XP 2009 virus. Good god. What happened? Melody |
ahhh those were the days.
my first computer i orked on was in 1977 my first day of high school. i saw a sign that said computer lab and wandered in. here was a room full of guys laughing and chatting across the room but only had teletypes to type on. from that day forwrd ive always been interested. i have had the trs80 computer which operted on 8 1/2 in floppy disks. my first online computer was a comodore vic-20. back in the days we all just chatted and communicated through bbs chatrooms. i worked in the datacaenters in early 80s and my first laptop was a toshiba that ran off of two floppy disks. no memory. too much fun then. skip forwrd 20 plus years. with the advent of the internet and the openess of whats available online. there rose a need for security precautions on the net. first is was mainly for the windows operating system... cause it was the big dog... everyone wanted to try to get a piece of him. in the early days of aim i was a member of a group and we had the most fun in thechatrooms with kickiers, punters, name changers. etc,,,,, this is the time computer hacking was in its infancy for the internet. true hackers were in fact members of clans that wanted to see if the other one could outdo the other meber. not by hacking corporations or softwares but by designing and writing code to get the other one off the internet the fastest. but then there were those who malicously did it for fun and glory to others outside the cirles. as the internet gre and its abilityies. so did the complexity of programs and securitys. and im sure it will continue todo so. keep your computer up to date. run antiviral software regularly and dont click on any screens that you arent sure f. when in doubt. ctrl =+ alt + del and under applications select window and hit end task. to be safe. the internet is a wounderous land of amazement even each day i go on. unfortunately where there is a yin there is a yang the cycle is always circular. roger. |

Roger: And I can remember when (before we had fax machines) and I was a secretary, there was a telex machine. My boss would get telexes from all over the world and we had this lovely little Indian woman who could read telexes (how does one read all these punched out codes??) But she was able to do this. I never understood that at all. Now I have a really important question about the control alt delete thing. My husband is forever getting these little pop up things on the right side of the computer (on the bottom), where the date and time are. He tells me "something popped up last night on the bottom right and I kind of thought it might be from Verizon, telling me I had a virus an click on the balloon to fix the problem". I said "Oh my god, you clicked on it??" he said "no, you always told me not to, so I just x'd it out" I said 'don't click anywhere on it, not even the X because it will self download". He said "so what do I do"? and I said "hit control, alt, delete, and end task". He's not sure "and neither am I', exactly what to select...BEFORE WE HIT END TASK. Will it be the first thing that shows up after hitting control, alt, delete?. So for example, if we get a popup on the lower right that says "you might have an infection, a virus, ANYTHING", what exactly do we look for BEFORE we hit END TASK?? Thanks very much. Melody |
usually if you get a pop up ballon from the loer right task tray its from one f the programs running there. your antivirus progrm or a microsft remeinder.
when those pop up click on them. the ones you want o be careful of are ones that pop up on a website your unfamiliar with. pop up windows that say hey click here to clean your computer are usually malware and spyware infected programs. just remeber if its from the lower right corner its a reminder for a program you have installed. as for the teletypes i could rread them after a few months of training as well as an ita2 holorith code punch card. roger. |
make recovery discs
so this is years later but I hope I get an answer. I id a system recovery and the make cd box came upbut not even full screen, there are no options showing. Only about 1/4 of the screen and it does not say much. I can not get to the place tomake the discs. so what do I do now? I candrag it to the botom of the page but that is it, HELP!!!!! |
HI,
can you grab the corner of the make cd box with your mouse cursor and drag it larger? If so it would probably change to an arrow.. What kind of computer do you have? |
Well I've been there and done that. I made the recovery disks right out of the box....YET I STILL RECEIVE THE REMINDER. I cannot stop it. Once I even went to where you start making the recovery disks and was told..only one set is allowed and you've used your quota. The reminder will not allow me to x it out, minimize it, delete it. The only way I can get rid of it is to go to the TaskManager and delete it. This is only a temporary fix...Within 20-30 minutes, I get the reminder again. I have an hp laptop using WIN 7. I may need some psychological help before this is over.... HELP PLEASE!!!

•Click the Start button , type Scheduler in the search field, and select Task Scheduler when it appears.
•If prompted for permission, click Continue . •The Task Scheduler appears. •In the left column, click Task Scheduler Library . •In the center column, select the task you want to stop. •In the right column, click Disable . •Close the Task Scheduler window. •The reminder no longer opens. |

I clicked START, I selected SEARCH, then it prompts me to select files, folders, images, ??????????????? So I selected files (because I didn't know what else to do) I typed in Scheduler A whole bunch of things popped up, the first being TaskScheduler.dll (I even know what dll means, it means dynamic link library, but don't ask me what the heck that means anyway. lol So after choosing TaskScheduler.dll a warning popped up that said "this is connected to most of your operating systems, and it DID NOT PROMPT ME TO CONTINUE, it had another word to choose (I forget). So do I go back and select TaskScheduler.dll, or was this the wrong thing to select? Thanks much Melody |
I never thought of checking the Scheduled Tasks.
I had some things there that aren't needed. I just deleted them but you can change the settings if it is something you need. Other ways to find Scheduled Tasks - GO to Control Panel and then find Scheduled Tasks click Start Go to Programs and then to Accessories then to System Tools and then Scheduled Tasks |

What came up? Nothing that said anything about PC REMINDER? I know I'm not doing something right!!! lol Melody |

All I can say is ::eek: :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
That happened to me after I had installed an anti-malware program. So I uninstalled the program and 'it' went away. Two can play this game, you know? |
