Sooooo How Was It?

The Thanksgiving Feast, that is..:) And, of course, your Family Gathering.......

I just had a barbecue chicken Pizza (schwans):p It was delicious. No Turkey and stuffin this year. I think DD will bring Spare Ribs and Cornbread tomorrow?

I'm actually in no hurry since I am a little under the weather..(translation.. feel shitty):o

So, did the baked, deep fried or whatever Turkey turn out yummy? Before and after pictures please.:D

I was a bit nostalgic today, when I thought back to all the Family Feasts, My Grandmom, Mom or I used to prepare.

My Cousin prepared a traditional feast and of course I was welcome there, but didn't feel up to it. I think she is bringing me a full plate for the microwave Saturday. Bless her heart.

Anyway, today is like any other day to me and always a day to give thanks.:grouphug:

Well that sure sucks, Frank.. Just in time for Christmas..Bah!!

My SSon and Fiance got back from Kuwait and Bagdad this summer and are on their way, on New Years, to Vegas to get married.

I will say some extra prayers for your DS's safe return and hope that things settle down soon, over there.:smileypray:

Glad you TG was nice but sorry for your news..

We had a nice time at DH's nephew's house. It was our first time there, he just moved in a few months ago.

He did pretty good planning a whole dinner (single, divorced man). It was about two hours late to eat but there were lots of snacks to carry us through. His turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes and gravy were delicious. My pies and cheesecake turned out well and they kept all the leftovers (yay!)

It was great seeing everyone, about 30 people turned out. I mentioned we could have Christmas at our house and in the same sentence said that DH will help me clean the house. He just nodded. :winky:

Frank, sorry to hear about your son going to Kuwait, but thank God it isn't Iraq or Afghanistan. I hope he'll be safe. I'll remember him in my prayers.

Day 2 IVSM behind me. One more infusion to go! Today was red moon face day!

PODH did the turkey in the turkey fryer, turned out good. I made my favorite cranberry jello salad, mashed potatoes with carrots, and fresh rolls. And we had Chocolate Silk pie for dessert.

We will have leftovers for a week!

:hug:Frank and Deb. Keep your chin up.

I hope everyone is doing good!

Sally...

CayoKay 11-27-2008 09:52 PM

 for Frank and Deb.

dinner was yummy...

my cheesy scalloped potatoes came out *great*

I used cheese made from our goat's milk in the white sauce, and potatoes from our garden.

the cornbread stuffing was fabulous, and the roasted chicken was tender and juicy.

we had Traveler's Blackberry Wine made here in Belize, and bread pudding for dessert.

Wonderful time!!!! My youngest daughter and my sisters doughter in law have done a fantastic job of taking over. they realize that my genration is getting older and their generation needs to take over. We enjoy being in the kitchen with them and occasionally doing something but they do most of it. And their husbands are usually by their sides. My oldest daughter has never been 'housewifey'. Two years ago her little one was a newborn. Last year her excuse was she was still nursing. So this year I told her she had to be in there. There were prlenty of adults to watch her two kids ages 7 and 2. She said that she never realized that the wonderful turkey she loves to eat was so difficult to cut and prepare. My youngest actually said loater tonight that for Christmas she wants it back to her and my sister's daughter in law. She said that the kitchen was just to crowded. To many cooks! My ssiter son (husband of this wonderful daughter in law) makes the best ham! And my daughter makes the best turkey. So between the two of them it was good.

Our son in law just got back from his second tour of duty in Iraq last week so we were truly blessed this year. Plus my sisiter is doing well with her chemotherapy from her breast cancer and my uterine cancer was taken care of with a hysterectomy. And we have two wonderful, beautiful grandchildren!

Frank (and Deb too), I'm sorry to hear the news about your son. I will keep you both and your son in prayers.

No Thanksgiving dinner (yet), since I have been doing critical computer repairs at the office since 9pm yesterday (when we were hit by a worm or virus which deleted everything).

The GREAT NEWS is that my better half will be on here way back from the in-laws with all kinds of goodies!;)

So, in advance of their arrival I have to say...YUUUMMMM !!!!:)

I got to enjoy 2 dinners! One at home and one at work with the kiddos who don't have parents that are able to take them home.

My fur babies and our outside ferals all enjoyed plenty of turkey also. Both meals were delicious and even more importantly the company was wonderful. And there are plenty of left overs for tonight.

Doydie!! Thanks for sharing those pictures. I see you've got the "big fork and spoon" on the wall! :D My Mom had a set like that!! It reminds me of our kitchen when I was growing up!! It was such a 60's/70's thing!! I wish I could find a set today....I'd put them up on my wall, too!!

Kitty 11-28-2008 12:06 PM

We all ate too much and have so many leftovers we'll be eating Thanksgiving Dinner for a few more days! Why can't I figure out (by now) that I don't need to prepare recipes that feed 8-10 people??

SandyC 11-28-2008 12:19 PM

Dinner was very nice at my uncles house. We stuffed ourselves, Jim napped, I played Wii for a bit and everyone else played poker, lost money and got drunk. A normal day in my family. lol

SallyC 11-28-2008 12:26 PM

I slept through most of it.:)

Twinkletoes 11-28-2008 12:44 PM

We had a wonderful time as well. Went to my brother's house 100 miles from here. Took my DD and her family from AZ with us.

So nice when cousins are able to reconnect as adults with children of their own. Hmmmm, I actually have pics, but I can smell the bacon and my SIL is making Dutch Babies. Yummmy!

Now we have to get ready for another Thanksgiving tomorrow: we're hosting a family reunion for my husband's side. Should be around 40 there.

We've got games and prizes for the kids, a bake-off with a cash prize, talent show and (of course) lots of GOOD FOOD!

Kitty 11-28-2008 01:50 PM

Twink, your family sounds like alot of fun. I miss all of that....we used to have big gatherings (my DH's side of the family was alot larger than my side) but haven't had any for the past 8 years or so.

I'm looking forward to our GTG next week....that's going to be so much fun!! I hope The Olive Garden is ready for all of us!! :D They won't know what hit 'em!! :p

I have really enjoyed reading about everyone's day.

CayoKay, how about adding that yummy scalloped potato recipe?

braingonebad 11-28-2008 02:31 PM

I wasn't sure Tday was gonna happen at all, with all the chaos - I got sick, dog got sick, baby got sick - but we were all okay in time. My kids, granddaughter and MIL came over, the rest of my family went to FL.

My vegan dd shared cooking duties with me - she did most of it.

:)

We had turkey, stuffing and gravy as usual, but no animal products allowed in any other dish.

I got some funny looks out here in the country buying vegan margerine. I finally found one and yelled *YAY!* out loud. I may have danced a little.

:D

The best dish was dd's thai steak - I swear you would never know it was a vegetable product and not beef. It was absolutley delish. At 19 she's a better cook than I'll ever be.

Grandbaby's fave was the sweet potatoes - or as she calls 'em, yummy ice cream. Must be the colored marshmellows I used on top.

 to all.

I have a great scalloped potato recipe...Apple Cider Scalloped potatoes. I will post it in the recipe section! Yummy!!!

freeinhou 11-29-2008 11:57 AM

Normal fare - fried turkey, just stuff. My parents were down from Tennessee - just the 4 of us.

Then yesterday - I took the folks and my wife to the space center and they got to watch the shuttle un-dock from the station from the flight control room viewing area. Then I gave them a tour of the original Apollo control room, the various shuttle simulators (including the commode trainer), and of course the Saturn V display at Rocket Park. They also got to see my messy work area.

First time they've seen where I work. They loved it.

Tom

well, first you need to get a goat, then you milk her.

:D LOL :D

then get some rennet tablets, and a cheese mold, and make goat cheese...

let the cheese cure for a couple of weeks, and then you're ready.

start with a basic white sauce recipe (2 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp flour, 1 cup fresh goat's milk)

melt the butter, whisk in the flour, keep stirring until smooth, and gradually add the milk, and keep on stirring, to make your sauce.

add about 2 cups of grated goat cheese gradually, and keep whisking, until creamy and thick. (reserve 1/2 cup cheese for the top of your casserole)

grab 5 medium white or red potatoes, pare, and keep under water in a bowl, so the potatoes don't oxidize while you're working.

slice potatoes, in nice thin even rounds, and make a layer in the bottom of a good-sized oven-safe casserole. (I use Corningware)

drizzle some sauce over the layer of potatoes, and add a layer of sauteed mushrooms (you can use canned if fresh aren't available), then another layer of potatoes, sauce, mushrooms, and continue until done, and casserole is filled.

sometimes you'll end up with extra potato slices, just bag 'em, toss 'em in the fridge, and use 'em the next morning for breakfast., but it's important that the casserole be saucy, so don't try and squeeze too many potato slices in.

you can sprinkle some green onions into a layer or two, or perhaps a handful of thin snow pea slices for color, top with the reserved grated goat cheese, and bake uncovered, for an hour, while the turkey or ham is finishing up.

most everybody will enjoy this simple, easy-to make side dish.

:D
