Forgetting my pills or am I?

Well, I have decided it is time to get a pill box. I am having a hard time remembering if I took my pill or not. You would think that wouldn't be hard to remember but sometimes I just don't.

I guess it is time to purchase a pill box and start putting them in it so when I can't remember if I took them or not I can just look.

I hate to think that at 40 I have to do such a thing but I guess giving in to my stupid memory issues is better than either going without or taking to many!

Just another stepping stone in this process of MS

Listen honey!
There ain't no shame in using a pill box! It's just another tool!

I have a bunch of them, with very big compartments, because the man has so many meds to keep track of. I use them now too! It's so much easier to set them up at the beginning of the week (or month, as I do) You can look at the container and immediately KNOW whether you took that pill or not so there is NO questioning your own memory!

Hannaford usually has a few at the pharmacy counter for free. Grab one next time you are there or ask at whatever place you get your drugs from, or even ask your doc for one. They have PILES of them in their sample closets yanno!

yeahbut 12-05-2008 10:50 AM

Great idea! Thanks and free is always good for me!

tkrik 12-05-2008 10:51 AM

(((Char))) Don't worry, I have done this plenty. Just the other day I went to take my abx, popped the pill, and the realized I just doubled up on my Neurontin. Needless to say, I took a 3 hour nap that day. LOL

RW is right, it is just another tool to help us out. I think even "healthy" people make these kinds of mistakes. To make you smile think . . . "The Whooooops Baby." LOL

I don't have a pill box but I do have a check list that I have come to depend on. If I am not sure, I just look at the check list. It works for me.

yeahbut 12-05-2008 10:57 AM

Thanks Trish, I did the same thing the other night but it was my pain med. I took that istead of my antibiotic that I was on for my Sinus infection after dinner and then an hour later took it again for that is when I take it normally. Boys did I sleep well that night! The next morning I was suppose to take my last antibiotic and saw there were two instead of one!

Desinie 12-05-2008 11:07 AM

I say, whatever works,Char. There's no shame in that. Better that than taking too much or fogetting to take your meds.

SandyC 12-05-2008 11:32 AM

We use pill boxes so don't you feel bad at all. Jim takes meds three times a day so we must use them to be sure he's taking them and not taking doubles if he forgets. We use the weekly ones that have four times on the box. I fill them up every Friday for the week. I love that so I am not passing out pills everyday.

barb02 12-05-2008 11:39 AM

I started using one last year. Plus I have a cute little one for my purse with extra neurontin and baclofen in it in case I am out when I am scheduled to take one.

ewizabeth 12-05-2008 12:05 PM

Hi Char! :)

At home I use an ice cube tray with 16 compartments. I fill it with each morning med and vitamin and cover it with a 1 gallon plastic bag. I keep it in the kitchen drawer. I like it because I can fit all the pills in it and don't have to refill it as often. I also have a big pill holder for the days that I work. I fill that the same time as the ice cube tray so I get 23 days worth before I have to do it again.

I keep a little ramekin cup in the drawer with the ice cube tray. The night before I take one day's worth of pills out of the tray and put them in the cup. Then I take them in the morning after breakfast.

On work days I can't eat until I get to the office so then I use the pill holder.

It empties before the ice cube tray so I refill it from that and use until both are empty and need to refill in 23 days.

The reason I can't eat until after breakfast is that I take a Nexium when I wake up with a glass of water and have to wait an hour before I have anything else to eat or drink.

This works well for me since I take so many pills.

At night I only take one pill now so I just keep that bottle on the counter and take one right before I go to bed.

Riverwild 12-05-2008 12:39 PM

Oh, GOOD idea on the ice cube tray Wiz!

I had to search for pill holders large enough for all the old man's meds. We finally got 8 of them from his doc, they are 7 sided and the compartments hold a LOT of pills, about an inch and a half deep and an inch and a half wide. I do 4 for day pills and 4 for night pills. I'm not sure what drug co. gave them to the doc, but on the bottom it says "Apothecary Products, Inc. Minneapolis, MN" They have a website and they have a LOT of different stuff to help with keeping track of meds! Click below.
http://apothecaryproducts.dirxion.com/Main.asp
There's a bunch of pages and they have a LOT of options, for those of you who need locking pill packs, pill packs that don't slide, easy open, etc, etc.

dmplaura 12-05-2008 05:31 PM

Um dear.. I bought a pill box at age 31, and I couldn't have been happier in doing so. Made my life so much easier not having to remember if I'd taken my pill and having to count through 100+ pills when I honestly couldn't remember.

Momma's Kids 12-05-2008 05:44 PM

My pill box comes with its own case...
It has seven containers, each one has four compartments...remembering to fill them back up has become the latest challenge.

Which is worse using a 'storage' unit or missing/doubling up on your meds?
That's what I call mine...the storage unit free of charge. lol

Kitty 12-05-2008 05:49 PM

I use a really large one.....don't need all the compartments but I'm too cheap to go buy a new one!! The one I use has an AM, Noon, Afternoon and PM pill compartment for each day! I only use the AM and PM ones now. I love it 'cos it's just one less thing I have to remember.....not that I would anyway :o but it helps!

karousel 12-05-2008 08:50 PM

I have been using pill containers for years, because I was forgetting to take them often. I have three different weekly containers, each a different size, and each has it's place where it is most convenient when it's time to take the pills. I have one for my morning pills, one for my evening pills, and one for my vitamins. Having them in three separate boxes helps me keep them in order. If I use one of those really big ones, I get confused. LOL.

doydie 12-06-2008 12:08 AM

I get mine free from Sams pharmacy. You just take whatever you need. They are deep also. I know you can buy the ones that allow for 4 times a day. But I get them free and just write on them on the top, AM, PM, whatever. My Mom doens't like to use pill boxes. So she turns her bottle upside down after she takes a dose.

bluenurse 12-06-2008 10:14 AM

I don't use a pill box, but I do have a system. I keep all my meds in the kitchen. I have a dated jounal/book, that I write down the name of the pills and time as I take them. Because I could never remeber if I took a med, I was always second guessing myself. Here's my method. I've used it for about 3 years.

1. take pill out of bottle
2. write name in in book with time
3. put pill in little dish by book
4. by now I have 4-5 meds in dish.
5. take meds
6. If dish is empty I took my meds. (brain is gone).

Also good if you take prn meds, so you can look on book to see what you took and what time. It's really easy when you get the system down, and a good refernce for prn meds!!

dmplaura 12-06-2008 02:04 PM

That does it.

We need to market pill boxes that have hip designs for younger folks :)

I want one with suns, moons and stars all over it! :)

azoyizes 12-07-2008 08:03 AM

It will make your life so much easier and safer.

I got a pill box because a few minutes after I took a pill, I was already doubting myself that I actually took it. It was driving me crazy. :) I load it up each day with my doses of pills, plus two Tylenol in two compartments just in case I need to take them, and I'll also know for sure that I didn't take any more than four in one day.

I love the idea of the ice cube tray.

My problem now is that I completely forget to take my meds!

yeahbut 12-07-2008 08:32 AM

Right now I am using the "turning the bottles upside down" as doydie's mom does until I get some extra $$ to purchase a pill box. My only problem is in the afternoon I am forgetting if the bottle is upright / down which does it mean?? :o

Thank you everyone!

Walgreens and Walmart have them below $10 Char if that will work for you. Oh and hint to someone you want a pill box and say what kind. Jim got his latest as a Christmas gift. lol

Um.... unless you forget what day it is. Then you think that you forgot the meds the day before and you forgot meds on the day you think it is. Been there.... done that..... :o

I have a keychain one that I can put a few pills in. Always resident are immodium (hey, you never know), tylenol, and then I will put a pill or two of whatever it is that I'm taking regularly. Helps if you go somewhere and forget your meds.

It means you need a pillbox with the days and times marked. LOL Maybe you need to do that along with writing down a cheat sheet, silly! ;)

Don't worry...I've had one since I was 16.
It took many years of mis-dianosis to figure out I had MS, so there was treatment for several diseases/disorders I didn't have. I can't tell you how many pills a day I took!

The one I currently use is one of those weekly ones. I put a bit of masking tape on each compartment with the number of total pills I should have, so I have a quick way to figure out what I took for today. My Medic-Alert record is printed out and kept on the side of the fridge so I can see exactly what I have going on, meds wise. Also good for hubby in an emergency as he really has no clue what I'm taking.
