BJ, If you can, check in.

Hi, BJ,

I hope you are ok.
If you do not mind, could you check in?

The last we heard you were having troubles with the pdoc being out of town, the generic lamictal, and a very big drive for work.

How are you feeling?

Mari

BJ 12-09-2008 07:59 PM

I was in an auto accident and can barely stand to sit here I’m having so much pain in my back. I was in the passenger seat and some guy broadsided us doing 50 mph. They took x-rays and nothings broken, just a lot of soft tissue damage in my back and neck. My right knee went into the dash and it’s 3 times it’s size right now. I have to have surgery tomorrow on my knee. My seat belt holder went into my kidney and I broke a rib which hurts like heck and they don't do anything for it. I’m sorry for not getting on here but I’m in a lot of pain and I’m on heavy duty pain meds. Thanks for all the messages and PMs. I can't reply now but it means the world to me

Being in a accident is awful, getting hurt is even more awful.
Recover from your surgery fast, and know we are sending
hugs and love.

But you know of all the reason you could have been
missing from here this is one that we probably didn't
think of more than others.

I'm sending soft hugs, and thoughts to you.
Will really look forward to when you feel like posting
again.

I just hope this surgery on my knee will help the pain in my back like the surgeon told me. That's why I haven't been able to get on here. My knee hit the dashboard and now they have to reconstruct my ACL and put my kneecap back in place. I have to be there at 8:30AM and they’re going to operate at 10. He said the surgery should take 3-4 hours and then I’ll go to recovery for a couple hours. He’s going to take a piece of my hamstring and use that to replace the old one with pieces of bone from my knee.

Thanks for letting everyone know Bizi. I’ll check in when I can.

I wonder how she will get home?
she may go to a rehab place for awhile, just guessing here....
bizi

Mari 12-11-2008 12:25 AM

That's my guess too, Bizi.
They should send her to rehab to help her get around before they send her home alone.
I trust that she has good drs watching out for her.

Dear Friend,
The docs might not release her to go home for a few days or a while.
She might go to rehab.
She'll let us know when she gets back.

I hope that they are taking good care of her.

Thank you. I don't know how severe her injuries are. She will probably remain there so her leg will be still,so it can heal. Like you said, she will probably be there for a couple of days.

Do they have computers in patients rooms? Probably not. I haven't seen any in their rooms in this state. BF:hug::hug:

BJ 12-12-2008 08:36 PM

I got home late this afternoon and I’ve been typing this in Word so I could cut and paste it. I couldn’t go home because I couldn’t go to the bathroom. The surgeon said the morphine and anesthesia put my bladder to sleep. Eventually they had to straight cath me several times because I still wasn’t going. It was a good thing because I don’t think I could have been home without the morphine. Eventually the nurse cut the time I could push the button and increased it. They gave me a femoral nerve block and it’s worn off and the pain is excruciating right now and the percosets are tearing apart my stomach. I'm still having a lot of pain in my back but the surgeon is hoping that it will ease up once the knee heals.

They gave me a femoral nerve block and then versed and fentanyl to calm me down. I asked if I could have a mojito cocktail in there but they didn’t go for it. The male nurse painted my leg green while singing O Christmas Tree, I think anyway. I don’t know if it was the drugs but I remember that. When I got to the OR they said I’m putting you to sleep and that’s all I remember until I woke up in the recovery room. I do remember they gave me 5 shots of morphine before they put the pain pump in because it felt like my leg was on fire.

It’s so good to be home even though it looks like I’m spending my Christmas on the sofa. I have to use crutches for 2 weeks and I have this huge brace on it. I still have the drain in because it’s still oozing a lot of stuff. The nurse is coming tomorrow to take it out. She said she’d take a picture for me on my cell phone. I have a cyro cuff to ice my knee and cpm machine which I’m supposed to use to keep my knee moving. And I have to go to physical therapy on Monday. It was unbelievable because the night of surgery they made me go to rehab. They said this could take up to a full year to be right again. I tried not to take any pain meds when I got home because I wanted to spend time with Hooper. Big huge mistake.

Mari 12-12-2008 09:31 PM

Dear BJ., :grouphug:
Sorry about the pain.
I can't imagine how they expect you to get around by yourself. It's good that you have a nurse coming to care of the medical stuff.

Can you sleep?
It seems that sleep helps recovery.
Did they tell you that you have to move around in oder to help with recovery too?

How about your meds for bipolar?

Ignore my questions.
I'm glad that you go that part over with and you are moving on to the next steps.

bizi 12-13-2008 12:25 AM

HI bj,
Wow....
you have been through a lot.
The pain meds ought to be taken around the clock, like every 8 hours 3 times a day with food so they don't upset your tummy.
I bet hooper girl was glad to see you.
I can't imagine how painful that must be for you.
I am sorry that this all happened...
You did not need any more stress.
I am hoping that you recover as soon as possible.
thank you for checking in, post when you can and know that we are thinking of you.

I've been taking the pain meds every 4 hrs like they told me but it's just not taking the edge off. The nurse came yesterday and changed the bandage and rewarapped it. I told her it's too painful to take the brace off and use the CPM machine. She called the surgeon while she was here and he said to hold off on the CPM machine until they get the pain under control. I gave it another 24 hrs and I called and they're going to send something stronger this afternoon which he said will probably knock me out but I need some rest.

This is why I'm in so much pain. The nurse took these pictures for me yesterday before she rewrapped it. You can see the 'yes' where they knew they had the right knee. I told her I was surprised it wasn't more black and blue and she said oh it will in time. The second one is the area where I'm having so much pain.

Mari 12-14-2008 06:33 PM

Yikes,
Those are some pictures.
I hope you got proper pain meds and some sleep. Sleep is good.

I am sending in a team of angels to watch over you during your recovery process.

BJ 12-16-2008 10:28 PM

I’ve had a bit of set back the last two days - with so much pain, and just pure exhaustion. I slept pretty much all day Monday - I think it ended up being about 16 hours. Last night I woke up sweating with an obvious fever so he ordered more antibiotics. I’ve been cuddling on the couch with Hooper all day because I just can’t seem to get warm. And it snowed today and I couldn’t even get out to enjoy it.

Getting up this morning was rough. My leg started throbbing as soon as I lowered it down to crutch it into the bathroom. I couldn't wait to get back to the sofa. I took my brace off and saw lumps on my legs from the swelling that accumulated in between the brace brackets. The nurse took a picture of all the bruising and swelling but I’m too tired to put it up here and I need ice and more elevation now. I haven't been able to use the CPM machine so the nurse comes and is massaging it. I wanted to feel a little better today. I'm a bit discouraged. It was a weepy day today just watching TV and all the holiday specials about family. The pain meds are making me nauseous, so I've been trying to cut back. Cutting back has been a bad idea. I think it's just too early because I feel like I've been run over by a truck.

Mari 12-16-2008 11:02 PM

Dear BJ,
I can understand why you feel discouraged.
I hope you start feeling better about the recovery soon.

Can you eat something with the pain meds? Does that help prevent the nausea? I'm guessing that you would need to eat something that doesn't require much preparation / cooking.
Thank goodness for the nurse.

BJ, you will get better. The antibiotics will work.
You'll feel better about all this in a few days.

Did you watch the Charlie Brown specials on tv tonight? I always like them but I don't have any memories associated with them -- so I can enjoy them.
