BJ was in a car accident.....

Quote:

I was in an auto accident and can barely stand to sit here I’m having so much pain in my back. I was in the passenger seat and some guy broadsided us doing 50 mph. They took x-rays and nothings broken, just a lot of soft tissue damage in my back and neck. My right knee went into the dash and it’s 3 times it’s size right now. I have to have surgery tomorrow on my knee. My seat belt holder went into my kidney and I broke a rib which hurts like heck and they don't do anything for it. I’m sorry for not getting on here but I’m in a lot of pain and I’m on heavy duty pain meds. Thanks for all the messages and PMs. I can't reply now but it means the world to me

BJ 12-10-2008 07:18 AM

I just hope this surgery on my knee will help the pain in my back like the surgeon told me. That's why I haven't been able to get on here. My knee hit the dashboard and now they have to reconstruct my ACL and put my kneecap back in place. I have to be there at 8:30AM and they’re going to operate at 10. He said the surgery should take 3-4 hours and then I’ll go to recovery for a couple hours. He’s going to take a piece of my hamstring and use that to replace the old one with pieces of bone from my knee.

Thanks for letting everyone know Bizi. I’ll check in when I can.

BJ 12-12-2008 08:39 PM

I got home late this afternoon and I’ve been typing this in Word so I could cut and paste it. I couldn’t go home because I couldn’t go to the bathroom. The surgeon said the morphine and anesthesia put my bladder to sleep. Eventually they had to straight cath me several times because I still wasn’t going. It was a good thing because I don’t think I could have been home without the morphine. Eventually the nurse cut the time I could push the button and increased it. They gave me a femoral nerve block and it’s worn off and the pain is excruciating right now and the percosets are tearing apart my stomach. I'm still having a lot of pain in my back but the surgeon is hoping that it will ease up once the knee heals.

They gave me a femoral nerve block and then versed and fentanyl to calm me down. I asked if I could have a mojito cocktail in there but they didn’t go for it. The male nurse painted my leg green while singing O Christmas Tree, I think anyway. I don’t know if it was the drugs but I remember that. When I got to the OR they said I’m putting you to sleep and that’s all I remember until I woke up in the recovery room. I do remember they gave me 5 shots of morphine before they put the pain pump in because it felt like my leg was on fire.

It’s so good to be home even though it looks like I’m spending my Christmas on the sofa. I have to use crutches for 2 weeks and I have this huge brace on it. I still have the drain in because it’s still oozing a lot of stuff. The nurse is coming tomorrow to take it out. She said she’d take a picture for me on my cell phone. I have a cyro cuff to ice my knee and cpm machine which I’m supposed to use to keep my knee moving. And I have to go to physical therapy on Monday. It was unbelievable because the night of surgery they made me go to rehab. They said this could take up to a full year to be right again. I tried not to take any pain meds when I got home because I wanted to spend time with Hooper. Big huge mistake.

Doody 12-13-2008 12:56 PM

(((BJ))) I'm so sorry for what happened. Remember...you're supposed to take the pain meds to keep on top of the pain!

tamiloo 12-13-2008 01:15 PM

Big mistake with the pain killers...one night I thought I could make it through the night without my meds and I woke up a few hours later in pain crying and it took me hours before I could get ahead of my pain.

You take care of yourself. Don't try to get ahead of yourself. I have done that a few times and paid for it for days.

Prayers and hugs to you!!

I've been taking the pain meds every 4 hrs like they told me now but it's just not taking the edge off. The nurse came yesterday and changed the bandage and rewarapped it. I can't use the CPM machine with the brace on and it's unbearable to use the machine. She called the surgeon while she was here and he said to hold off on the CPM machine until they get the pain under control but keep using the ice machine. I gave it another 24 hrs and I called and they're going to send something stronger this afternoon which he said will probably knock me out but I need some rest.

This is why I'm in so much pain. The nurse took these pictures for me yesterday before she rewrapped it. You can see the 'yes' where they knew they had the right knee. I told her I was surprised it wasn't more black and blue and she said oh it will in time. The second one is the area where I'm having so much pain.

Doody 12-14-2008 06:22 PM

Oh Owie ((BJ))! It looks like they were able to do it arthroscopically rather than open surgery? That's GOOD. When I had my knee done almost 2 years ago now, I remember the big YES on my knee, lol. Well, would rather they get the correct knee!

I hope the big guns meds help!

Here's my Yes knee, LOL.

Doody, is your knee better now? That yes, is just too funny.... and a bit scary too!

Doody 12-15-2008 02:43 PM

Oh yeah ((nikki)), pretty much good to go. I don't know if you remember or were here...I tripped over Oscar's babygate, caught my foot on the side of the door as I was falling, and it ripped my knee up. Wasn't a car accident. That was one month after I fell down the kids' stairs and broke my tailbone. :o

Poor sweet ((BJ's)) looks just awful! How painful that must be with all that work they did. I wonder if BJ is in la-la land with the new meds today. I hope so. ((((BJ))))

Dear BJ .....

Sending you love and best wishes......... I hope that you're all well - or at least close to it - by now

BJ 12-16-2008 10:30 PM

I’ve had a bit of set back the last two days - with so much pain, and just pure exhaustion. I slept pretty much all day Monday - I think it ended up being about 16 hours. Last night I woke up sweating with an obvious fever so he ordered more antibiotics. I’ve been cuddling on the couch with Hooper all day because I just can’t seem to get warm. And it snowed today and I couldn’t even get out to enjoy it.

Getting up this morning was rough. My leg started throbbing as soon as I lowered it down to crutch it into the bathroom. I couldn't wait to get back to the sofa. I took my brace off and saw lumps on my legs from the swelling that accumulated in between the brace brackets. The nurse took a picture of all the bruising and swelling but I’m too tired to put it up here and I need ice and more elevation now. I haven't been able to use the CPM machine so the nurse comes and is massaging it. I wanted to feel a little better today. I'm a bit discouraged. It was a weepy day today just watching TV and all the holiday specials about family. The pain meds are making me nauseous, so I've been trying to cut back. Cutting back has been a bad idea. I think it's just too early because I feel like I've been run over by a truck.

Brokenfriend 12-16-2008 11:28 PM

Hi BJ

I'm sorry for the pain that you are going through. I hope that it stops hurting soon.

I know what you mean about the Christmas commercials on TV. I won't be seeing my family either. I would want to see them, but they don't want to see me.

The Lord has his eyes on all of us,even the sparrow. The Lord will be with us on Christmas BJ.

I hope you feel better soon. BF:hug::hug::hug:

mistiis 12-17-2008 08:56 AM

(((BJ))) this healing is going to be a bit of a long journey for you. Have you told the nurse about the nausea? They can either change the pain med or give you something for the nausea. You simply must keep that pain under control!!!!! Protracted severe pain can cause depression in and of itself. We won't even get into the whole Holiday deal. This one is going to be a different journey for you. You won't be able to do the things that you would normally do. But, you can cuddle with Hooper, try to watch something positive on TV, like nature shows. How about music? Do you have any easy to do hobbies? Rest is very important. Gosh, I sure do hope that infection clears....you are in my prayers dear one....

The year I had my neck fusion, I was not able to 'do' anything for Christmas...no tree, no decorations, no gifts, ....I simply was not able. I was forced into thinking more about what Christmas is......hard to do when the world is trying to show you another view....besides, we like the distraction....I am trying to offer ideas that may help you get through this...
(((BJ))) ...keep us updated when you can....

Doody 12-17-2008 10:53 AM

((BJ)) Do ask about something to help with the tummy. They have meds to help with that as far as I know.

Owie, owie, you poor baby. But cuddling with Hooper sounds wonderful. You had a very traumatic injury and any surgery is a trauma to your body. This will take awhile to heal. Your pain is perfectly normal. That infection though...whew, girl, I'm glad you have a nurse to help with this.

Change those channels to something that makes you feel better!

Bryanna 12-17-2008 12:53 PM

Oh BJ!!

Hello BJ!!

Oh my goodness, how dare this happen to you!!!!!!

Please know that I too join SOOOOO many others who are thinking of you and praying for a full and healthy recovery. Remember to gently remind yourself that this is a temporary situation and you will heal from your injuries. As you know positive thinking makes our spirit stronger and doesn't allow the negative bugs to hang around too long ~'.'~

A few simple remedies that may help with the medication induced nausea...

Don't take it on an empty stomach.
Sipping room temperature ginger ale.
Hot tea of ginger or peppermint.
The B vitamins help also.
Munchng on dry crackers.
Avoid dairy or spicy foods.

The homeopathic remedy of Arnica pellets taken under the tongue every few hours may be helpful with the pain and swelling of your knee as well as your other injuries. It is also safe to take if you are on other meds.

Is there someone who is helping you with food and so forth? If not, perhaps the nurse could recommend someone?

Please take all of our hugs and wrap them around you as you go through this bumpy journey. You are never alone as there is always someone thinking of you and sending you their love and spiritual support......... ~'.'~

Many hugs and well wishes coming your way..... always and always!!

Bryanna
