Home Remedies

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/post435793-4.html

Curious suggested a "Home Remedies" thread....and I think that's a wonderful idea! My grandmother and mother used to use all kinds of home remedies for what ailed us. Some worked....some didn't.....but it would be interesting to hear what others do when they don't want OTC or prescription meds.

Twinkletoes 12-30-2008 10:32 AM

Okay, so how do I cure procrastination?

Become forgetful! Then you won't remember that you procrastinated. LOL

Blessings2You 12-30-2008 11:55 AM

I was going to procrastinate, but I keep putting it off.

My grandmother used to give us a big spoonful of melted butter when we had a tight cough. I wonder why?

Riverwild 12-30-2008 01:42 PM

Good Thread!

Honey and lemon for a sore throat= 1 tbsp. honey, 1 tsp. lemon juice, heat and take one spoonful. (from my mom)

Gentian violet= dab on canker sores in mouth (from my mom)

Mud on a bee sting= mix a paste of mud and water and apply to bee sting. Let dry. (from my mom)

Oatmeal Bath for itchies= 1 cup oatmeal (not instant or fast cook!) tub of warm water. Mix and climb in, soak until water is too cold to sit in. Rinse and pat dry. (from my mom)

Baking soda and peroxide to brush teeth when you don't have toothpaste= mix a tbsp of baking soda with a tsp of peroxide. You can flavor it with peppermint extract or other flavored extract. Brush teeth normally. (from my mom)

I've got lots more! (all from my mom! Boy, she was something! I miss her and wish I had listened more when she spoke!) ((that's for all the moms out there!! kids WILL remember! :p))

Momma's Kids 12-30-2008 01:51 PM

Save your used aluminum foil...its great for cleaning grills, tire rims, etc.

Wasp/Bee stings...you can also use tobacco soaked in water or chew it if you don't mind the taste. Place it on the sting.

Vinegar...cleans and kills most bacteria better than bleach. It also will take the 'heat' of a sunburn. Sit in a tub of warm water and pour over skin, then soak in water for a few minutes.

Baking soda is also good to clean brass and silver...just make a paste, add a pinch or two of salt...clean, rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

Lighter fluid used in small lighters is good for removing oil stains, like chocolate, bubble gum, etc. Just pour around stain and then wipe with a wet hot cloth...wash with regular laundry and most stains will come out.

weegot5kiz 12-30-2008 03:08 PM

I have used most of these too honey and lemon ig good so is and a lot less tasty, warm water and salt water gargle, for sore throats, and for mouth infections, helps draw it out

aspirins crushed and mixed with water form a paste and apply to bite and scratches

oh and for male dogs oops inside use vinegar to clean it keeps them away from marking it again

what a neat thread!!!

My mother (and her mother, and so far back as I could remember), had one remedy for anything to do with congestion. In Italian it's pronounced PICARADDA.

I heard that in the jewish culture, it's called cupping.

Well, here is how it goes. when you have chest congestion, or a bad cold, you lay on your stomach. Someone else has to do this to you, you can't do this to yourself.

My mom had an old italian friend Lia, who came over one day. I thought she was practicing voodoo on me.

She would take a wine glass, then she would take a quarter, wrap a piece of gauze around the quarter.

She then put the quarter on your back, set it on fire (I'm not kidding you).and insert the wine glass over the corner so the rim is flat on your back. All of a sudden you would hear a whoosh sound, and the fire would suck your skin into the glass, putting out the fire. She would do this all over your back. You would be left with round circles all over your back.

I will never forget when she took me to the doctor the next day (the home remedy didn't work, obviously, and I was coughing my brains off).

The doctor listened to my chest, then he raised the back of my blouse, and when he went to put the stethiscope on my back he jumped and said "oh my god, what are these circles?" My mother explained what had happened and he gave her a dirty look and said:

"Listen to me, she needs antibiotics, AND NO MORE VOODOO!!"

I will never forget that conversation if I live to be 100 and that was over 45 years ago.

lol

Buffheart 12-30-2008 06:59 PM

My mom makes sugar with (oatmeal I think) as an exfoliater

Lara 12-30-2008 08:40 PM

Cold tea is good for sunburn too. I guess it's the tannin.
I don't mean that iced tea drink, I mean proper leaf tea brewed and allowed to go cold.

I use aloe vera for burns and stings and such. Just snap off a bit of the leaf and squeeze out the juicy bits.

Vinegar has been mentioned, but I'll mention it again because it's quite the wonder cleaner and it's so inexpensive. (white vinegar I mean, not balsamic or redwine vinegar LOL ! )

Vinegar is helpful to reduce the pain of marine stingers too.

When I used to get splinters as a child my auntie used to make a bread poltice and I thought it was gross and I still do, but it always drew out those nasty splinters.

Lavender oil or whole cloves are good for keeping insects away in cupboards

Gosh, I have more but can't think of them at present.

Melody, there are natural practitioners who do that cupping thing and they sure do leave huge red circles. lol.

Okay, I may be "cheating" just a little bit, but I ran across this interesting page after Tkrik (sp) passed on some cool brain exercises on the same site:

Twinkle, if you do what the old Nike commercial says....JUST DO IT
that cures procrastination..hehehehe

or the forget about it, and then you wont know you procrastinated I like that one better!!

I do the gargle with hot salt water when toothe aches, or for sore throat...or even when throat gets small tickle like it might be getting sore...

cant think of other things right now..hugss,sarah (oh I know HUGSS can do wonders for many ailments hehe)

kicker 01-01-2009 04:52 PM

For unset stomachs my Mom gave you a large teaspoon of Coke syrup. They used to sell it in a bottle at the pharmacy

kicker 01-01-2009 04:54 PM

Coca Cola not cocaine.

Lara 01-01-2009 05:00 PM

LOL! I figured you meant cola syrup. ;)

Riverwild 01-01-2009 06:39 PM

The "old" Coke syrup DID have a cocaine base. The Coke syrup of today does not.

Anyone got any of those old bottles tucked away? :D

I wonder what size they sold it in...quarts?:p

It is said that there were many, many addicts out there, especially since it was marketed to housewives who were at home, no BC, lots of kids, often married to a man who was chosen for them by their parents. They were feeling "poorly" a lot of the time!

Lara 01-01-2009 06:47 PM

Wow, is that for real?
This Aussie always thought that was one of those urban myths.

Interesting. Thanks for that.

They really did. I wish they still did, I for one could use a pick-me-up.

:p

Peppermint is good for more than breath - it's for every digestive problem. A mint or some tea for upset stomach or whatever.

My mom used to give us girls brandy for cramps. They didn't have pamprin back then.

Lavender is good for skin. I steep some lavender water for myself and my dog if we're dry and itchy, like in the winter. It's also an interesting flavor on cookies.

Chamomille to relax ans ease muscle stiffness. Make it weak and even babies can have a sip (helps them if they're cholicky or constipated).

I swear by loading up on vitamin C for colds, adding extra garlic to the diet and having a hot toddy (tea with lemon, honey and whiskey).

:D My dad use to call that a "Knock'em out Charlie". We would get the hot toddy and Vicks Vaporub on our chests covered with a heated cloth baby diaper... at least it helped us fall asleep if nothing else.

I have found that Altoids mints work wonders when I have a cold. The peppermint is so strong it relieves the nasal and chest congestion temporarily so I can breath.

Momma's Kids 01-02-2009 07:52 PM

Yep...Coke actually got its name from cocaine...I remember when I was very young people would drink coke with BC or Goody's headache powder. The combination was a quick 'pick me up' and got rid of the pain.

I don't see how anyone can swallow those nasty tasting powders...I shudder at the thought.

Clove oil is good for toothaches...it numbs the nerve.

braingonebad 01-03-2009 11:24 AM

OY, I have Goody's in the cabinet. They ARE nasty... ugh! I follow it up with oj.

Steep a teabag and put that on an abcessed tooth.

Dixie_Amazon 01-03-2009 11:41 AM

Put bay leaves in your flour, rice and pasta to keep bugs out.

Any home remedies for a stye?

Lil'Monkey woke up with one in her upper eyelid. It's all swollen. No basketball practise today. She is freaking out. School starts back Monday. She has a warm wash cloth in it now.

Teabag steeped in warm water. Keep heating it up when it gets cool. I usually keep a cup of water next to me and dip and wring and apply repeatedly.

Hope that helps her!

Curious 01-05-2009 08:21 AM

TY RW.

She kept putting a warm wash cloth on it. I also had her use baby shampoo to clean around her eyes. I found that on a medical site.

She isn't always the best at getting mascara off. This helped a bunch. The swelling is way down. Boy did it look like she got punch in the eye. Wasn't me, I swear, I only sock hubby.

I'll have her try some camamile tea bags tonight.

Warm milk. Works even for pink eye.

I used it on my dog the other day, he must have gotten something in there out in the wind. Big buggy eyes of his.

I use plain ol' lotion to get mascara off. A little on tissue.

Lara 01-07-2009 10:54 PM

I'd keep an eye on it, curious.

Personally, I wouldn't let her touch it too much with either fingers or anything else except a hot compress and I'd dispose of the compress carefully.

Usually they'll get better in a few days but if not, a doctor should really have a look at it. They are usually caused by staphylococcal bacteria and are infectious.

Curious 01-08-2009 06:15 AM

:D She hasn't been too happy about not wearing eye makeup, but I refuse to let her. Awwww....poor baby. :D She sure has gone through the lip gloss.

Just a teeny lump still there. Swelling is gone. You can't even see the lump, just feel it. It's not bothering her at all. Well, a little watering, but she has packs of Kleenex with her at school.

I warned her about keeping her hands away from her face. Tossing the Kleenex away and using hand sanitizer.

She has some performances coming up. She does not want it swelling up again or getting another one. She has to wear makeup for those.

I bleached the crap out of the wash rags she used.

I have been OCD about cleaning any surface she may have touched. Every doorknob is sparkeling clean. :p

Lara 01-08-2009 06:20 AM

lol, I so totally understand that last comment.

Just tell her that sometimes we can make adjustments.

If it's all heavy eye makeup, then go easy on the lips, and if it's no eye make up then go a little heavier on the cheekbones and the lips. :icon_biggrin:

braingonebad 01-09-2009 01:24 AM

Also, you might wanna chuck her eye make up and buy new, just in case it's infected. Ew. Hope she's all cleared up soon.

Curious 01-09-2009 08:06 AM

She tossed out all the sponges and washed the brushes. Mascara and eye liners...gone and most of her eye shadows. She had gotten some new good stuff for Christmas. Most she hadn't used. She scraped off the top layer of the ones she had.

One good thing...less clutter of her makeup now!!

There doesn't even seem to be a tiny bump now. WHEW.

Lara 01-09-2009 08:10 AM

That is very good news.

I think we all should be careful with old makeup. I know I have this Chanel mascara that is way due to be thrown out, but heck, how can I throw it out??? lol

cindyd 01-09-2009 07:17 PM

vicks multipurpose

Iv'e read that vicks works on toenail fungus (rub on daily). Also good for skin problems, like eczema. We have Dr. Gott column in daily paper. Its a question and answer theme about all kinds of medical problems. I read about the soap under the sheets for leg cramps there too. Here is one more I read there. Rub castor oil on joints that hurt. (2 or 3 times daily) This column saved my life. Its where I finally figured out I had severe B12 deficiency. Someone wrote and asked Dr. Gott to dicuss B12. I'm good now. Well, the best I'm going to be anyway. Hopes this helps!;
