And two days later, we adopted her *sister* too....

Holly, the first dog, and Millie. Aw, are they cute or what?

Curious 12-31-2008 11:32 AM

Adorable!

I can't wait until we move out of this townhouse. The kids want a dog so bad. 6 months and counting. :D

SandyC 12-31-2008 12:26 PM

A

so sweet!

ewizabeth 12-31-2008 01:18 PM

Oh my gosh, they're adorable!! It makes me want a little foo-foo fluff of a doggie! :D

Doody 12-31-2008 04:23 PM

Oh my gosh they are absolutely gorgeous, and worth more than the price of a fur coat!

Kitty 12-31-2008 05:19 PM

How cute!! I started to get mad when I read the title but then looked at who wrote it and knew it wasn't true!! :p

The *Gurlz* are both 8 yrs old. Their prior owner had to go into a nursing home due to alzheimers. So sad... So we adopted Holly, and the rescue people asked if there was any way we'd consider Millie too. I already had 2 dogs, so I said I'd ask dh.

But 4 dogs? I could just see me trying to walk all of them.

Holly had a perfect record - good with kids, other pets, walks nice, everything. So I figured she'd be fine.

Millie had every naughty thing going on you could think of. She was okay with Holly, but not so good with other pets, NO kids, red check for MEAN, lol, just had surgery, almost 15 lbs, does not groom does not walk on leash.

Yet when we went to the adoptathon and saw both of them in the cage, we were drawn to Millie, and I asked the rescue lady if they still needed a home for her. She said someone was going to take her for a two week trial to see if sh would work out.

I said if it didn't work out, to give me a call.

It was a good Christmas, because we had Holly and we knew Millie had a home.

The day after Christmas we got a call that Millie was returned to the rescue, and they asked if we were still interested.

When I brought her home, she went right past Holly, then they looked at each other and sniffed. Millie looked at me like she was mad - "What are you trying to pull, passing that dog off as my Holly?" She had to circle and sniff a few times before she believed it was really her buddy.

They had been through a lot, from one place to another and another, separated. It must have been scary and upsetting not knowing what was going to happen next.

It was so sweet to see them together again.

Now Holly is one of the best dogs I've even seen, sweet and well behaved. Millie is nothing like we were warned. She does lead fine, she is fine with the other dogs, and she is fine with my granddaughter.

The first day, I had some aggression, but all she needed was a "No" and that was that. I doubt anyone tried to train her.

She's already lost half a pound, loves a bath, and will allow some brushing if I go easy. She's really quite a sweet little girl.

She looked pretty bad when we got her, but even in these few days, she's looking better. A little brushing, a little trimming, and she's fluffed right up like a fox colored teddy bear.

A lot of people would have passed these two up due to their age, and they would have missed out on such great dogs.

What a great thing you and your DH did for those girls!:hug: I hope they have several good years left to enjoy your family!

I saw that time and time again at the Humane Society where I worked right out of high school. It was heartbreaking. They wouldn't adopt any animal out over 5 years old or with any kind of disability. There was a beautiful tri-color Lassie collie who was blind and 13. She was from a situation like yours. She didn't want to mess her run, walked beautifully on a leash, loved people and other animals, and listened like a treat. But they wouldn't let even ME take her. And I cried when I had to put her to sleep. She was such a gentle, sweet dog and such a good girl who suffered a tragic loss of her owner..... :(

I'm so happy for rescue groups and people who are willing to go the extra distance to have a loving friend who might be up there in animal years.

Brain, you're a real sweetie! But, ahem, I already knew that. And go figure....... you now have a lovely girl named Holly. Coincidence? I think not! :D

braingonebad 01-03-2009 10:36 AM

I don't believe in coincidence. I think there's a reason for everything, and what looks like coincidence is just a sign that you're on the right path, where you're supposed to be.

I always look for those signposts so I don't get too lost.

The funny thing is we were'nt looking for a dog. And it's always ME calling dh into the den, begging for a pet, and him saying how we already have so many.

This time, he stumbled upon them and called me in to have a look.

(I think Sarah McGlaughlin's commercials got to him. I really do)

:D

He knows better. Show me a critter and I own a critter.

You should have seen though, when I walked out of Pet Smart with Millie, you'd have thought I just ended world hunger. Every planned pethood volunteer thanked me for adopting Millie. All the customers thanked me. All the people who worked at the pet store thanked me.

Finally I asked the cashier, what's the big deal? PP does adoptathons in here every week - so why is this any different.

Nobody thought Millie was getting a home. They all loved her, but with all the red marks on her file, and at her age?

Holly had half a shot, even at 8, but not Millie.

I got her out in the parking lot and cried my eyes out. All I could think was what if that had been my Sophie? What if something had happened to me, would somebody have the heart to take her in?
Took me 10 mins before I could even get the key in the car.

Too many dogs like that.

And oddly, even though I spend all day with the dogs, as soon as dh comes home, or wakes up and comes downstairs, the girls go right to him. They know who's idea this was. They know.

So this makes 5 dogs total we've *gotten out of the system* so far. How many puppies were not born, to a similar fate, since all mine were spayed/neutered and not from breeders or mills, I can't even guess.

With Millie and Holly in a home, they have room to save 2 more.

Lucky lucky me, covered in bird poop and dog hair.

:D

Bless your hearts. :heartthrob:

They are so adorable! I can't wait to hear more stories about how they continue to blend (hopefully) into your family! I came from a dog forum where I was active to here, but now I just keep searching out pet stories! Soon, I will dive more into pain stuff (ugh).

What rescue did you get them from? Thank you for helping such deserving fluffs!
