Alffe 01-16-2009 09:25 AM

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr

It's -16 here and there is at least two feet of snow on our picnic table.

There are several indentations in the snow outside our bay window...where I'm sure the deer slept last night..probably getting
some protection from the wind there.

I know lots of us are getting a hard winter..first one here in years so
we're being reminded of what it's like..I keep closing the cupbards under the sink that I'd opened to keep the pipes warm...habits die hard. *grin

How's by you Ducky? Doody? Abbie? BJ? Nikki?

Course those of you in warmer places can now rub it in!

What happened to that Arizona road trip! :D

Curious 01-16-2009 09:39 AM

I'm warmer!!!:yahoo:

 It's in the teens here.

Doody 01-16-2009 09:52 AM

Well Ms. Alffe, it's been brutal. I believe yesterday morning we woke to -26 (not including the windchill) and most Iowa schools were closed.

Right now it's a balmy -17 degrees and rising! Next week a heat wave in the lower 30s! The weather man said so far a total of 56" of snow, I think.

Poor man in Des Moines! This morning a garbage man found a 65 yr old wheelchair bound man in his driveway. He was unconscious and had a small shovel in his lap. The garbage man found him because the LED light on the wheelchair was blinking. He got stuck in the snow last night and was outside ALL NIGHT! Needless to say, he's in the hospital right now. I can't even imagine...I nearly froze putting gas in my car last night.

Chemar 01-16-2009 09:54 AM

even us Floridians are bundled up:cool:

30s last night and high of only 59 expected today
for us that is brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:o

tho as our paper points out
we are a sauna compared with N Dakota;)

Nik-key 01-16-2009 10:39 AM

Brrrrrr is right! -16 here too. But we are suppose to get a heat wave tomorrow.. all the way up to 7 !! lol. Chemar, 59 sounds wonderful to me!
Want a house guest ;)

Alffe 01-16-2009 10:43 AM

Ok, you win Doody. *grin. I can't get that link to open Cheri and Curious...you're having a heat wave!

Alffe 01-16-2009 10:44 AM

Nikki I thought we were going to Arizona! :D on a bus with Abbie driving and BJ bringing her dogs.

Doody 01-16-2009 10:48 AM

Did you check on my link in my last wonder? Check this out!!! http://www.kcci.com/video/18486499/index.html

Alffe 01-16-2009 12:54 PM

That's just ridicuous Doody. and now I get Cheri's link too.

It's climbed up to 10 below but the roads are a sheet of ice cause it's too cold for the salt to work. :p

Doody 01-16-2009 02:59 PM

Yes that's what happened here too. Salt wasn't doing any good. Wouldn't melt. Plus when we had the blizzard conditions earlier this week, it just blew the salt off anyway. SO many awful traffic accidents this past week.

Daughter called me from Madison. It took them 6 hours to get there. The roads were pretty bad. She said they finally stopped counting all the semis pulled over to the side of the road! Their diesel starts to gel in this extreme cold and the trucks won't run. She said they were stalled all over the place.

We've gone all the way up to 6 degrees above! Tomorrow it's suppose to be 30. Wow, that'll be almost a 60 degree difference since yesterday.

Burntmarshmallow 01-16-2009 04:27 PM

baaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh
hummmmmmmmmm
bugggggggggggggg

burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

:grouphug:

I am glad I live in florida:p
PEACE

da duck 01-16-2009 05:27 PM

Well. it was -5 when I went to work this morning and all the way up to -1 by 8 am. I refuse to look at the temp now cause I don't wanna know.
I thought of you , Alffe, while I was watching the weather channel and they were talking lake effect snows. If it were lake AFFECT snows, I would sure have to get behind that. I know it affects all of you all in a big way.
We too are supposed to go up to 17 tomorrow. Woo Hoo. Think I will stay in, bake blondies and play games with The Kid. He will win, but we'll have a blast.

Oooh, and a pot of beef stew. That sounds good too.

Stay warm, folks. Stay safe.
:grouphug:

MUST you always tease me with talking about all the stuff you're gonna cook and bake! I swear you do it to annoy me. :D

Stay warm!

FeelinGoofy 01-16-2009 10:54 PM

where is that mans coat!!!!!!! thats crazy.... throwing water into the air and it automatically freezing :thud:
It was 8 this morning here, but thats nothing compared to those below freezing numbers!!!!!!!! BRRRR

Abbie 01-16-2009 11:21 PM

It made it to 3 above here today...but it was -21 (negative 21) this morning. The high temp yesterday was -15 with wind chills at -48.

I wish we had more snow... if it's this cold we should at least have the snow...

We have maybe 5 inches of snow in the yard.... :(

I have missed every appointment this week due to the snow and cold.
Aw well... a little warm up this weekend maybe have a high of 34 but calling for more snow.

I hope everyone is staying warm... or cool depending on where you are.

hugs for all!!!
Abbie

Nik-key 01-17-2009 07:46 AM

We are having a heat wave, it is up to -8 right now... but we had our boiler quit on us:eek: It is one of those newer ones that has a computer on it. It quit, is flashing a code at me, like it is helping me. Annoyed me so much I just shut the sucker off. Went up in the attic and got the extra space heaters.

I have been up over 24 hours. I was just heading to bed when I noticed it was getting chilly. Good thing I checked! After it went off, I did get it started again by following the directions in the book... but it wont circulate. Then quits and flashes that stupid code at me. grrrr Haven't even paid the sucker off yet!! Should be under warranty though. I imagine it will be some time before they can get to us. I told them we have space heaters, so go take care of those who don't! Have I mentioned that I hate winter? :p Warm hugs and hot chocolate for everyone  Nikki

Alffe 01-17-2009 08:36 AM

Nikki, you tell those people you are a caregiver to your husband and are not that well yourself! They need to get their butts out their...you should be at the top of their list.

It's -7 this morning but supposed to climb to 20 later today so maybe the salt will begin to work on our streets. And we only got a dusting of more snow...I surely hope Mr.Alffe's can email me the pictures he took...so I can send them to Doody and she can post them here for me. :D Abbie, you can't want what we have. *grin

Wren 01-17-2009 09:43 AM

:) Heat wave here -- seriously --- it was 19 this morning and it's going to hit 40 this afternoon!
You all are welcome to come visit. Bring a short sleeve blouse..... we'll go to the Mexican restaurant that has outdoor dining.

40?? Is this even possible?

Curious 01-17-2009 09:47 AM

Chips? Queso? Salsa?

I'm in. :D

Who else?

Spanish Moss 01-17-2009 10:16 AM

We are supposed to get to 47 today...and the skies are blue. I guess I won't whine for the 60's like I was tempted to before I read YOUR temps!

After you all get finished with Wren's salsa, pack her up and swing over here...there's an oyster roast today at the park near us (next to the school for those of you who have been here)...all you can eat with all the sides...plus music and face painting, etc. Of course you get the best Chinises food east of the Mississippi at the Moi house-hold if you don't like oysters...

Stay warm everybody!!!!

Curious 01-17-2009 10:18 AM

 I can't handle the oysters. Too slimey for me, but the shells are pretty. :D I could wash them up and put a Hershey Kiss on them. :p

Spanish Moss 01-17-2009 10:23 AM

OK, Curious....Chinese food for you instead of oysters!

We have bought some beautiful angels made from oyster shells...a little spanish moss for hair, some cotton seed pods for wings....I have talked for a long time about making some myself...I am getting inspired though

jaded2nite 01-17-2009 11:43 AM

I won't even mention the expected high for today, I'd get hate mail. I'll just say it is colder than normal here in Florida. I have a BIG pot of chile on the stove and will be fixin some cornbread later. Ya'all are welcome to come for dinner and to thaw out.

Dottie

Alffe 01-17-2009 01:07 PM

JUst returned from the store...I've NEVER seen it so crowded..yes, the economy is awful but people are so worried about being stuck in with more snow predicted I think they are doing some hoarding...like milk, and eggs.

I had to get some 7 up for Mr. Alffe's tummy and some broth...it feels delightful at 18 degrees!!

Chili and cornbread sounds wonderful Dottie. :) And we could meet your doggies!

Oysters make me shutter...*grin. But the memories of that location made me very happy. :D *whisper...tell moi to put some air in that basketball.

FeelinGoofy 01-17-2009 02:00 PM

rick and i went out for supper last night and had some of the best chips and dip at Coach's....I'll have to agree with the rest on the oysters... but i'll jump at the chance to eat some of Mr. Mois cooking!!!! :winky: Its very warm here today...I almost feel guilty. :o I hope you dont catch the crud from Mr Alffe. Its going around at the place i work at... I hope you get that broiler fixed soon Nikkey!!!!!! big hugs for everybody here.... I promised my daughter we'd take a trip to the mall to get her a pair of shoes to g with her dress for hte semi formal dance at school.

Alffe 01-17-2009 03:35 PM

Makes my mouth water just thinking about it! Maybe next week if it warms up enough for the salt to work!!

Curious 01-17-2009 04:15 PM
