having fun with some of NT's features

I thought maybe some folks would like some help with some of NT's features. :)

~~~~~~~~~~
one of the biggest complaints that I've read is how when folks would type out a long post only to have it lost once they've hit the submit button.
The best way to avoid that is to click on "remember me" when one is logging in.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3753
some folks like to type their posts on their word processor first such as WORD or Works or notepads then cut and paste into their posts. That's a great tip also. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

an Avatar

Avatar in forum definition would be that little photo/picture one has below their user name.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3743

to create an avatar, first one needs find a photo or picture that is about 85 by 85 pixels or 29.3 KB (whichever is smaller). NT has a software that might shrink it down for you but it cannot be too large of a size otherwise you'll get a failed message.

To create an avatar, click on "User CP" (located at top left) and scroll to

"Edit Avatar" and click on that.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3764

once there, one has the choice of adding the photo from a url from the internet or browse something that is on their desktop (picture file).

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3774

Just need to make sure the sizes are small enough.

the quickest way to find out the size of a photo (on your own computer, not on the web) is to place the mouse over the picture and let it hover for a couple of seconds and it'll give you the details.

If not, right click over the photo/pic and scroll down to properties. It will give you the info on the size of the photo/pic. (this is also for the photos/pics you see on the internet)

then click on save changes.

posting photos and pictures

how to post photos/pics.

curious did a wonderful job already explaining how to post photos.

click here for instructions

~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll go one step further. NT has offered every member free photo spaces to post photos from their own computer and store it in their personal profile.
to start, first by click on your own user name. It'll then take you to your personal profile page.
On the right hand side, scroll down to "Albums" and click on create albums.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3742
Give the album a name.
now, one can upload photos from their puter to their album by clicking on upload pictures.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3746
the uploading window will come up
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3758
you can upload up to three photos at one time.
click on "browse" on the right hand side and browse through your puter for the photos you want to upload. The maximum limits are:
Maximum File Size per Picture 9.54 MB
Maximum Picture Dimensions 1,800 by 1,800 Pixels
but if the photo is slightly larger in size, NT's software will shrink it down automatically.
once the pathway is created, (either by selecting the photo you want and double clicking on it or click on the photo then select "open" )
select upload pictures.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3759
the photo(s) will then appear to be inspected for final submission. Click on Save Changes. And now those photos will be in your album.
To post those photos, go to your album and select on the picture you want to post.
copy and paste the second option: BB code
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3744
and insert that to anywhere you want to place it in your post. (including your signature)
because it is coded already. You do not need to add additional IMAGE codes ( [IMG] [/IMG] )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

if you find a photo on the internet that you'd like to share on NT (read the rules on bandwidth and copyright first, please)

what you'll need to do first is to copy and paste the URL.

For example, I found this photo that I like:

http://www.prashantpoladia.com/html_...-cute-kids.jpg

I would cut and paste the above URL, then click on the "photo/pic icon"

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3751

this window will pop up for you to insert the URL of the photo:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3754

As a general rule to avoid human errors. I would hit backspace once to undo the highlighted "http://" then copy and paste the URL into the box then select OK.

it now should look like this in your pre-post.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3749

(as coupled by the IMAGE tags [I call them the IMG brothers. LOL]

~~~~~~~~
some useful tips.
If you see a photo you like but you see a whole page of writings and other photos, you cannot serve that page.
every link starts with http:// and ends with something. If it ends in " .htm"
you cannot post those photos. You have to find the individual link where the photos themselves are served.
the URL will usually end in something like " .jpg" or ".gif " or anyone of those picture file names such as php or bit or tiff.
and if the site is strict about their bandwidth, they may not let you link their photos/pics and you might see a big red X.
If you want to practice, the best place is to practice in your own personal profiles page. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*Edited to add another tip:

The easiest way to find out where that photo/pic is located: is to "right click" over the photo (provided it is NOT locked by the website) and scroll down to "properties" then left click.

it'll give you the information.

On that new "grey window" Look on the left side for "Address (URL)" and you'll see where the photo/pic is hosted. Copy and paste that

that's the quickest way for me to link photos here. You can always test it by placing that over your address box and see if that photo shows up by itself.

if you want to practice with the photo below by right clicking over it and checking its properties.

the URL link should be: http://www.prashantpoladia.com/html_...-cute-kids.jpg

http://www.prashantpoladia.com/html_...-cute-kids.jpg

Good luck and have fun!! :)

Ohhh thank you Moi, I for one NEED pics to understand instruction! This is Most helpful.

I just had a HUGE Panic attack, Dang dog managed to trip me while carrying my laptop. It's broke!!! The screen looks like a crystalized mess. DH won't be home for 22 days to fix, but I thank DH for leaving me his old laptop....Almost had to cry to lose you all!

But this one will do, very slow, but a life line all the same. Anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix my laptop? I can still see behind the cracked looking, crystalized screen some of my text. It still works but the screen is bad...

who moi 03-14-2009 11:52 AM

linking a link...

the easiest way to link a link (link a link link *music just popped in my head. LOL) is to simply copy and paste an URL here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MLBfwblps8

NT's software will automatically use the VBB/UBB codes to enclose the link.

(in case you are wondering what those codes are(look like): )

the more fancier way to link a link (and I am always often asked to share this. LOL) such as this:

click here to check out my link a link...

or to embed a photo to create puzzles (LOL) such as this:

http://icanhascheezburger.files.word...ad-explode.jpg (click on the picture of the kitty)

you can even do it with just smileys. (but I'll let you guys practice those on your own) :D :p :o :cool:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
first thing to do is to click on the "Insert Link" icon
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3750
it will give you the insert link window (a tiny window)
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3754
As a rule to avoid human error, I would hit backspace and get rid of the highlighted "http://"
now insert the link you want to share and hit OK.
you now will see this on your pre-post:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3762
see that highlighted URL? That's where you can have all the fun.
The first URL that's inside the [] is already coded.
If you leave the whole thing along, it'll just show the URL, like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MLBfwblps8
BUT, if you backspace that highlighted part and put whatever you want in there. l usually put "click here"
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3761
it'll look like this:
click here
and if you want to get fancy or embed a secret code like I do sometimes. You can place a photo in there. (but you have to make sure you use your [IMG] Tags that you just learned about using photos. LOL)
or use smileys, like this:
:D :p :confused: :eek:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

once again, your personal page is the best place to practice these and you can always delete them later

hey gg/hazel,

I think you'll either have to call tech support if it is still under warranty or take it to a puter repairs shop. There's no way you'll be able to fix that yourself and I wouldn't use it. Those things are POISIONOUS if they leak...and I wouldn't take the chance...I would not use it anymore until it is fixed, K?

:hug: :hug: :hug:

gardengrl 03-14-2009 12:02 PM

k.....sobbing.....

Thanks for that info as I did not know that!

where are the smilies?

besides the smilies next to your pre-post doc.

there are always new smilies being added for us to express ourselves.

click on [More] under the smilies will give you more options:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3755

such as these:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3756

I usually copy and paste them vs typing them out.

Because they are case sensitive. For example, the "Doh" smiley cannot be typed, "doh"

and there are just way too many to remember them all by default.

this dude I always remember by default>>>>>>>>>>>> :D

Curious 03-14-2009 12:10 PM

I just click on the smiley and it inserts it. :Hum:

who moi 03-14-2009 12:22 PM

well, shoot, you're right!

I've been doing it all wrong all these time...:ROTFLMAO:

Curious 03-14-2009 12:27 PM

Do you use the WYSIWYG editing feature?

No way did I teach Moi something. :rolleyes:

No, I don't like that feature WYSIWYG. But you should post about it. LOL

WYSIWYG= What you see is what you get

I don't like it because of my own reasons and the way I post. LOL I type faster than I think...know what I mean? :thud: LOLOL

PS, heck yeah, I am always learning...I like to admit it when I am wrong. LOL Nobody is always right about everything and anything. This is why I have problems with these tech support sometimes. They act like they know EVERYTHING and won't ask their team members...

everyone has to take on a different knowledge of different parts, a computer is a complex thing. I think of puter tech like doctors.

Yes, you have to have a general practioner, but you also have your specialists. I really can't stand those that think they know everything and sometimes, I just have to let them know that they're wrong. LOL

And it's good to know that I am wrong, keeps me humble...a humble pie eaten... :D

Curious 03-14-2009 12:34 PM

It just lets you see your post while typing, the same way it will appear when posted. (not linked pictures and such)

I use it. Saves me from hitting Post Preview...cuz I tend to forget to hit Submit Reply if I do that, and lose my posts. :o

You can change your options by going to UserCp. Then to Edit Options. Scroll the bottom box, which is Miscellaneous Options. Message Interface Options. Click the little menu arrow to choose.

Be sure to click Save Changes any time you make a profile change. (signature, avatar, email....)

You weren't wrong Moi...there is more than one way to eat pie. :) I like a bite of crust first. ;)

who moi 03-14-2009 12:41 PM

that's true. There's always more than one road that leads to Rome. :)

Funny thing is, like I know I can just use "Ctrl" and the key "B" to get [B ] [ /B] but I just like to type it out...

WYSIWYG is great for those that want to view the posts in their true form, without seeing the links vs pictures, like this:

regular setting
[img] http://icanhascheezburger.files.word...ad-explode.jpg [/img]

WYSIWYG setting (when replying)

how to multi-quote

sometimes we see a bunch of posts in a thread and we feel like we want to reply to just more than one person or more than one responses from one person.

Either way, the simplest way to quote ONE person is to hit the "Reply" button right under their posts [located on the bottom right hand corner of their own posts]

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3777

"Post Reply" which is on the bottom left of the whole thread, hitting that will just let you reply without quoting anyone (a general reply)

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/pi...pictureid=3776

~~~~~~~~~~
to multi quote folks. like this:
to do such multi-quotes, click on this icon:
under everyone's posts that you'd like to quote.
Then just click "reply" and you'll get multi-quotes to reply to
Thank God there is no F-15 or I would have pressed it and... Die of curiosity !!! :eek:
Oh, by the way, is there any way to multi quote one post ??? Like reply in parts one same post ??
I mean, I have done it "manually", adding the "quote" thing several times among the sentences of the post but, dont know, was wondering if there was a easier way... :rolleyes: I guess not.
