New glasses

I picked up my glasses and I like the look of them; but the new prescription is nutty. I can't see the computer screen with the upper OR lower lenses. I had planned to switch off wearing both pairs but not because one didn't work! Don't know whether to question the opthamologist or rhe new folks who developed the lenses!

BARB! ABSOLUTELY!
Did you get your prescription from the same place? Or from a different opthamologist?

From my own experience and seeing what was happening to other people when buying glasses!!!... it depends on the lab they go to and there is absolutely NO reason you should not be able to put on those glasses and see perfectly normal!

The first pair of glasses I bought from Sears optical and OMG. I could see out of one spot in the glasses if I tilted my head. I took them to my doctor and when she tested them she was appalled at how poorly they were made.

There's no excuse. If your prescription is correct, then the lenses should work fine and don't accept any excuse like...."Well, you'll get used to them." Bull.

I took those glasses back to Sears and demanded my money back. Was hesitant to go to another place but I did and when I got the new glasses I was shocked! I couldn't even tell I had them on the vision was so perfect.

Hate it when I hear vision places tell people "Oh that's just how it is, you'll get used to it.

Whew, now that I've gotten all hissy about that!...LOL I hope you can get some satisfaction!

Curious 03-18-2009 11:59 AM

Barb, did they fit the glasses on you when you picked them up?

Sometimes they have to be tilted to get the vision field correct. My very first glasses...I threw up everytime I wore them. After 3 days of not knowing any better...I tookthem back and they fixed them.

Also..sadly, there might be an error and the RX could be messed up.

Doody 03-18-2009 12:01 PM

And are these progressives or regular bifocals??

I got the prescription from my opthamologist, Guess I'll take the glasses to him to see if they filled it correctly. Nothin's easy...................

Yeah they fit the glasses to me (on me) when I picked them up. It's just enough off to drive you nuts!

No line bifocals - is that progressive? I just know they are slightly off above and below the line.

Spanish Moss 03-18-2009 05:17 PM

*giggling here because of this reminding me of Bill Cosby's "49". Rent it if you haven't seen it.....

Doody 03-18-2009 05:34 PM

Yes, Barb!!! No lines are progressive. When going through my glasses fiasco, I saw so many people there at the same time as me who had just gotten new glasses. And heard over and over..."Oh it takes people time to adjust." B A L O N E Y! Not if they are done properly!

Yes, ask your doctor to check out the glasses. That's what I did and she was appalled. She also said she saw that a lot from people who had bought their glasses at Sears optical.

What is really strange is I ended up taking chances with the optical store at a Hy-Vee food store here. I had a really great person help me with them as well, fitting and all. I've gotten 3 pair from them and every single one has been perfection.

As Ms. Curious said, yes a fitting can make a huge difference as well. But some of those optical stores, that you see ads for a lot, send their's to big labs that can or can't be very good.

Well I took the new glasses to my opthmalogist and they are very close to the prescription which is stronger than my old glasses. She said when the strength is increased it is good for reading and driving but I will lose something in between - like for the computer. She suggested that I wear the new ones and keep the old ones by the computer. She also said this often happens as we age. Sure glad I have no money invested in these new glasses. The prescription was one my doctor wrote in October when I had my annual check-up in case I wanted to get new glasses in the future. Well I am sticking to what I've got! Nothin's easy though.............................

Lara 03-19-2009 08:31 PM

I wear bifocals these days. They cause me a bit of bother actually.

I used to wear disposable contacts. One eye used long distance prescription and the other eye used the short distance. Took about 2 weeks for my brain to adjust and then they were the best thing I'd ever used.

I found my eyes got really tired though and even though I had glasses to use at night to give my eyes a rest, I found it was just getting to be a bit of a pain.

I'd love to go back to the contacts again though.

I have vertigo a lot and find my bifocals tend to interfere with my field of vision when I'm walking around. I have trouble judging distance and also trouble judging changes in levels. My head is bobbing up and down all over the place.

What I would do is maybe adjust your monitor so that you've not got your head at an unusual angle trying to read. Even try moving it closer or further away. See if anything helps. Do remember though, Barb, that you can change the Text size up in View. This browser I'm using right now has ZOOM + or -. My old one I thought just had something like adjust Text Size + or -.

.

BlueMajo 03-19-2009 09:24 PM

Oh... this topic reminds me I need to go to try my contacts... Im shocked.

Thanks Lara - I think I just changed the text size (oops, or did I?) Anyway it's good to know I can. I'm going to try again.

Lara I'm still a newbie with this computer. I found text size and put the cursor on largest then tried right clicking and left clicking but neither works. Can you tell me what I should do?

Lara 03-19-2009 11:55 PM

Not sure what browser you're using but did you try it when you just had the SOS Forum open or when you were typing a reply in the little text box?

OK, try it this way.

See on your keyboard there is Ctrl button in far left front?

Put your finger on that and at the same time put another finger on the plus sign + which should be next to Backspace. Do it simultaneously.

Don't do it with the text window open, where you type a reply. Do it before you reply when you have a thread open or a main page open.

To decrease size, if you make it too large like I just did LOL, you just click Ctrl and the minus sign - In between the naught 0 and the equal sign = on your keyboard.

Lara 03-20-2009 12:12 AM

Darn, I think I just missed you.

Your name was here a minute ago, then *pooof* gone.

Either that or you were sleep-typing. lol

Doody 03-20-2009 09:59 AM

((Barb)) are you on a PC or a Mac?

LOL I just learned something new from Lara! But what I've always done is just hold down the Ctrl key on the bottom left of the keyboard, and use the scroll button on my mouse to increase or decrease.

And I don't have any problem seeing my monitor with my progressives. I do desperately need a new pair though so I'm glad I have my annual eye appt later this month!

Lara 03-20-2009 10:06 AM

Wow, I didn't know that. Thank you Doody!

I've only ever owned one mouse with a wheel (the one I'm using now) and that's not been for so very long, so wasn't aware it worked like that.

I just tested it and it works so easily. :D

Thanks.

I DID go to sleep last night. Thank ou for telling me how to accomplish this' At first I made it so big it was off the page on either side. If you use Ctrl and plus or minus you don't have to fool with "view" do you? Not sur if this will last - will I have to do it every time I post something? Just had lunch with Alffe - yummers. Mediterranien (sp) food! Thanks again. Barb

Alffe 03-20-2009 12:55 PM

wow...I didn't know that either Doody! Thanks!

Barbo did you find the default box?

I'm on a PC. When I make the script larger as Lara showed me, then everything is off the page. Boy am I a newbie!

No I haven't seen it, Moss. Can you still rent videos or does it have to be DVD's?

Alffe 03-20-2009 01:50 PM

The default box is at the bottom of this page also.
scroll down to the bottom, it's on the left side.

It will work for as long as you have the browser window open.
You'll just need to do it again next time you log on.

If you Press Ctrl and the + key method, then only press the + key once. If you leave your finger on that it will just magnify it further.
