Profile Trackers
 

Somebody told me that there is software you can buy or download to find out who has viewed your MySpace or Facebook profile page, or even who has TRIED to view it but gotten the "you have to be a friend" message. Is this for real?

I think it's kind of creepy that I could check somebody's profile to see if it was, say, somebody I went to high school with or just someone with the same name, and the person could tell it was me that looked. Spy vs. Spy?

They have it to download. Many website use it too. Yep..creepy.

From what i found online searching about it..

The basic thing that trackers would show about who might be visiting your MySpace or FaceBook profile is, a general location and/or possibly an IP address.

The only way some of them might give you more info is if the other person is logged on the site and had signed up with true identification.

And some tracker sites require you to sign in on them to get the info...:rolleyes: some even ask for your details...:rolleyes:

It looks like many of the trackers are getting blocked by both sites as they come up.

Some sites suggest many of the tracker programs are scams themselves.

Here's another one: A friend of mine called me the other day and said that her boyfriend accused HER friend of calling him a name. Apparently my friend had used his computer, and he was somehow able to use a cookie or temporary internet file (not sure which) to open her private messages on either Facebook or MySpace and see what her friend had written, calling him a bozo or something.

Of course, that makes him creepy, but I thought if you used a public computer (or somebody else's) and logged out of a social networking site or Yahoo or whatever, you were safe. Hmm, maybe she didn't log out. Does it matter?

Sounds like he is a bozo. :p

If you go snooping, then you had better be able to handle what you find. Not a whole lot of trust if you feel the need to snoop.

It might not even have been private. Is anything private on facebook?

But if she is going to share a computer and not clear her passwords, she needs to watch what she writes.

It really depends on the settings on each computer.

most public computers in libraries say to be sure to log off to make sure your info is cleared.


If her/ or any computer has an administrative profile, that she uses as her main use - or that anyone can use , with no password ... that's asking for trouble.
the administrator account can access all accounts on the computer.

I have 5 profile accounts on my computer and I am the only admin account. everyone logs on to their own profile.
and logs off when done.

she should turn on the guest account or even set up a limited use account that will have limited uses on the computer if she is letting others use it.

This is getting WAY over my head :D but I'm going to pass all this info along to those who will appreciate it and understand!!

So. Suppose my granddaughter is here visiting and says, "Can I use your computer, Grammy?" and I let her check her email, use her Facebook or MySpace, order clothes, etc.

Can I then somehow access all of her accounts, even if she's logged off properly?

Relatives who use your computer...especially kids....

A warning... If they visit a dangerous site, you can be spammed with pop ups, endlessly, or your homepage hijacked, or a virus inserted via cookies...

My friend let her 10 yr old nephew use hers once and it took special programs to get rid of the pop-ups!
Sometimes the kids are clueless as to what is what. And sometimes they try to look at naughty pictures, esp if a peer has been bragging about them.

I visit another forum online (it uses vBulletin too) but it is not a health forum and is quite busy-mostly politics. Their moderation is not the same as here, and new members can post links. Well a few days ago a person was banned for bad behavior and came back angry and put up a link that looked benign, six people clicked on it and got viruses. Two had major problems because they were not up to date on their protections! NT has more safeguards, but clever people can always bypass those, just like on the street with crime/theft.

Never ever click on blind links...that say "click here" etc., either. That is one of my biggest rules!

If you use the admin account for your computer you could see what she saved - pics, documents, music, and any downloaded programs etc.

and you could make sure her settings are safe depending on her age.

For her online places it depends on if she saved her passwords on the computer and if she put an password on the password file in the browser settings.

Depending on her age I would set her profile/account up with her just to be sure it's as safe as possible for her to go online.

Hopefully her parents have made sure her settings at home are OK and not too much info is given on her myspace or facebook accounts.

before I installed the WOT on my Firefox browser all the searches I did without knowing what sites might be safe or not...:eek:

The WOT {web of trust} puts little colored icons on webpages and search results - green is safe, orange is so so, and red is no no!!
and if you accidentally go to a red site the screen will go black with a warning.

I really suggest anyone searching for things gets this addon - i have a link to it with more infoi in the sticky threads here.

The WOT site has an addon for IE now too. in the link above.

Lil'Monkey is 14...until April 2 :p, she has a MySpace and a Facebook account. She does not have the password to either of them. I do. It's something we decided as a family. Better to keep her safe then sorry. She and her friends know I check her sites and her messages.

BTW..this also goes for her cell phone. Yep. I did catch one of her guy friends asking her to send a dirty picture. :mad: Stoooopid kid. He is 14 and the member of the gym. He got to deal with her bodybuiler dad. :D
