Your fired!
WARNING! Long rant.
I did it, I fired my doctor today. I couldn't take it anymore! Some of you may remember I have discussed him before. I am on Tricare Prime and he's the only doctor in my area that's close. Well, six years later and numerous complaints later I have to let him go for my health. He's a sweet old man, really he is. BUT, he doesn't even have a fax machine nor computer to get my referrals in on time nor does he call like he claims he did. I had to pay out of pocket several times and I am sick of that since all he had to do was fix it. It's his job when he agrees to be a Prime Care Manager. That's not the only reason. His office has gone downhill. It was bad enough six years ago when I started but he had a sweet receptionist who cleaned up and made it as nice as she could. It's old, it's musty and let's just say having a pap in there kind of gives you the creeps. Oh and he has no nurse so forget about a witness for exams. He has also been sued for malpractice. He just shelled out over a million for misdiagnosing a patient with bladder cancer. I tried to look over it since the patient got a second opinion within four months and the outcome was the same whether he was dx'd early or not. He makes comments to me that he has patients come in every three months because he doesn't make anything off Tricare, Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. Hmmmm, and I thought he was looking out for ME. Another patient just quit after nine years with him. She claims he misdiagnosed her son for nine years. Not sure what was wrong, didn't ask, not my business. Several other patients have quit too and his receptionist I like so much? She left the practice last year. All too close together in my opinion. My son Chris has had knee issues and this doctor refuses to send him to an ortho. He thinks he can fix it. Nik has major sinus issues and almost went into pneumonia last year. He wouldn't send him to an ENT. The final straw. I haven't told but a couple here what's been going on with me. I have been having heart palpitations for several months now. I asked the doctor about it and he sent me for an EKG. Of course it came back normal as I suspected because palpitations wont show up unless your actively having them. I brought him the results that day and asked if I should be wearing a heart monitor. He said no, insurance will only pay for that if the EKG was abnormal. Ummm, that's not what the EKG woman said. She said that's the only way to get a good reading of palpitations. That or go for a stress test or heart ultra sound. I brought this up and he said I didn't need the testing. He even went so far to ask me to come in when I have the palpitations so he can see what is going on. That is near to impossible since they only last a few minutes. More than likely my palpitations are from the upper chamber of the heart and not the lower. If that's the case I will be fine. He said if I have another palpitation he is going to put me on heart meds. Without further testing! That was all I needed to hear. What if this is just anxiety? What if it's normal heart palpitations? Sheesh, what in the world? Heart meds could slow my heart too much. WOW. I have heart disease in my family. My mom, double bypass at age 49. My dad, dead at 49, massive heart attack. Don't you think even in layman's thinking I should be seeing a cardio doctor or at least someone who specializes in such cases? Anyway, my new doctor is an internal medicine doctor. Since we're all adults in the house I figured we didn't need a family doctor. We'll see how this one goes. I can change whenever I want so that's good. For the record, I don't have PPO insurance. I could have taken Tricare standard but I don't like having to pay 25% plus overages and deductibles. I've always had good luck with network plans like HMO so we'll see. Tricare has asked me to file a grievance about what's going on. I may just copy this. lol Thanks for listening. |
geez, Sandy. With all you wrote, I am having heart palpitations just reading all you have had to go through!!!
So, is the internal med doctor out-of-network? I was not quite sure... |
OMG Sandy, I can't believe you held out that long with that quack. I'm glad you got yourself a new doctor. Make sure you file your grievance!

Holy cow! You're far more patient a patient than I! Definitely file a grievance, notify your insurers, and it sounds like you might need to alert medicare and the state as well. Do everything you can to prevent him from pulling that malarkey on anyone else.
This really burns my britches! |
I forgot to add that we've spoken to a couple of docs in the area (it's a small town) and when I mention my docs name they kind of look scared. One went so far to tell us he caused a huge problem among a couple of doctors at a local hospital. Not sure what about but from what I gather he has a temper that I have never seen. Oh and that lady who's child was misdiagnosed? Somehow the child's records were damaged by water.
|
I am glad that you have found another doctor. That other doctor sounds awful and it certainly was way overdue in leaving him. Take care.
|
Well, you were more patient than I would have been! I have lived with what I called heart palpitations for 24 years. It took many trips to the ER, days with a Holter monitor and more echo cardiograms than I can remember at this point to be diagnosed with supra ventricular tachycardia. SO I know how scary those can be.
As a Tricare prime patient I too have had to "fire" a few docs... most because I felt they were too free with prescription writing! Please do let Tricare know of the poor quality of care he delivered ...he sounds like one that needs to just retire. I do understand you desire to have a doc closer to your home... I drive an hour to my neurologist because he is the BEST in the area. |
I can't believe this guy still has a license to practice! Heart meds without, at the very least, ordering a Holter monitor? Pap exams without a nurse in the room? Not only is he a danger to his patients, but he's also leaving himself wideopen for a variety of lawsuits.
You did the right thing by quitting him and finding a new doc. |
Glad you fired him! Hope the new doc does ok. My PCP is an internal medicine guy, and he's been the greatest. Hope the same goes for you.
|
I hope the new doctor is great to! It's virtually impossible to get an answer these days when you ask about one. Everyone is afraid to lose their job or has no clue. But don't you worry, if this one doesn't work out I'll move to the next one.
|
Wow, you put up with a lot from him!
Get that heart checked out soon! |
Yea Sandy!!
You go girl!! You did the right thing.
Sounds like your old doctor is a goof. As for your palpitations....you definitely need to get these checked out by a good cardiologist. Most likely you will need a stress test and a Holter [24 hour] monitor. Do not let anyone prescribe heart meds without your having had a diagnosis of the heart problem {From a former cardiac nurse} Having Tricare [ or try-n-get-care] as we call it in our house is always interesting. It seems that the doctors who accept tricare are not always the cream of the crop!! Best of luck with your new doc and hopefully you all won't have to see him too often but get those 'pitty-pats' [technical tern]checked out!! Take care Risby |
Good for you, Sandy. I can't speak for everyone but I'm tired of doctors feeling like they "own" you and can dictate what treatments you can and can't have.
I hope you find a new doctor that listens to you and works with you to keep you healthy. |
Sandy, every state has an online Medical Board. You can search for your new Dr's name there. It will list any disciplanary actions if any.
Here is a link to every state: http://www.fsmb.org/directory_smb.html |
If you don't feel good about the new one, don't wait, look for another. Our health coverage changed, so we went to another doctor listed and she tried to do things she shouldn't have to be "the Guardian" of our care, avoid referrels out and keep all alloted money to herself to keep costs down. Health insurance changed, we got to go back to old Dr., she is very concerned and almost over-refers us out on any suspicion of trouble - urologists, neurologists, PT and wheelchair scrip, Now she wants me to get in-home care, honestly I don't think I'm at that point but they could pay for my house cleaning as I no longer can do it. If she feels my MS neurologist is too slow. She oversees everything my neurologist does, had encouraged me to change MS neurologists based on her research of their abilities. PCPs like this are a treasure and we think ourselves lucky. Sandy, you and Jim deserve the best. Shop around. (our new insurance way back gave us a book of in-network PCPs. Got sick, called the one we had chosen, turned out he'd been dead for several years!!)
|
glad you have a new doc...I hope they can help you:hug::hug:
|
hugss Sandy, did not know you were going with this stuff, wow what a dr!! glad you are finding the new one good luck, heck most any dr will be better than what you were having hehehe hugssss, sarah
|
Sandy, I have fired many a Dr. I hire them. I owe them no loyalty. They get paid by me or the insurance company I contract with.
Interview a prospective Dr. Don't go in for an exam first. Who takes their clothes off for a stranger? One date atleast. :p A mechanic screws up your car...you take it back to them? Nope..you find someone else. Go woth your gut too. Bad vibes..walk out. |
Sandy, I'm so glad for you that you got a new Dr.
(Getting the files wet reminds me of a movie I just saw. Someone deleted them.) |

Malpractice Settlements: 08/30/2007 $1,000,000 DEKALB IL Disciplinary action: 07/31/2008 Reprimand (w/Monitoring) Unprofessional conduct in failure to identify renal failure and bladder cancer and failure to maintain sufficient records. :yikes: What really makes me mad is we have talked about when Jim went through kidney failure and how it was missed. I didn't know he also did the same thing. We fired Jim's doctor for missing his kidney failure and reported him. He was demoted to ms research only. I think he's allowed to see ms research patients once a week now. The new doctor has no legal or disciplinary actions against him. Whew. My first visit with the new doctor will be for meds only and chit chat. |
Oh wow and Oh Dear!
Thing about some docs is they are well 'known' for their 'attitudes' and can bad mouth patients so other docs won't want to treat them. SIGH!
Best words to use are: "WE AREN'T COMMUNICATING VERY WELL...AT ALL" and just leave it at that with any new doc you see. No bad mouthing or the like...good docs KNOW what's really going on and will respect you for your tact. AFTER you get established comfortably with a new doc, then seek out and complain with your insurance company. The state medical board might have a hard time 'proving' a case of malpractice without new stronger diagnostics [by new docs] to back things up. I know because I've looked into it. Sounds like this guy is past his prime, and waaay outta date! Go forward and get the testing and treatments you need! Besides, word-of-mouth works many ways? Between docs and more importantly between patients! Good fortune with new docs and many many 's - j |
Save the site Sandy. It can take time for these actions to get posted.
Also, ask if they have proactised in another state. Very important question. Then look up that state. |
Hey Sandy! Glad you are seeking a different Dr; that one's sure a ''quacker''. I went through a period a couple of yrs ago of fleeting heart palps too. I was glad to find out mine were from menopause. Hey, a girl can't be too careful. Get thyself checked out and let us know how your'e doing. Sending hugs.
|
DM, I am in menopause now so that makes sense. Thanks.
|
Wow! Glad you found a new Dr. Sounds like the old one might have done you in for sure! You did the right thing!
|
Ay-i-yi!! He may be a nice old man, but he's acting very unprofessionally (I'm assuming "professional" means something more than making as much money as possible and placating insurance companies..Naive, I know)..I hope your new doc is the one you need. No matter what we think the cause may be, heart palpatations are nothing to mess with. You want to be sure of the cause and the treatment. I'm keeping fingers crossed for you and sending positive vibes your way!
|
Good for you, Sandy!
I've never heard about the connection between menopause and heart palpitations. (Thanks DM). About 3 years ago, I went to the ER a couple of times and later had some thorough testing done b/c of weird flip-flop sensations in my heart. Turned out nothing was wrong, and I felt kinda stupid. But I'd rather feel stupid than dead. Glad you found a new doc, Sandy, and hope he is a good one. |
Sandy, it is great you have found another doctor. I to have had to fire doctors before. Bacause of him I seem to have my guard up when seeing new ones, in different field, and that is bad to have.
I really hope this new one will turn out good. My thoughts and prayers are with you. |
Whats wrong with you, picking on a senile old man like that?
Actually I am impressed with how long you stayed. I would have been out that door years ago. With all you have on your plate, I am glad you are finally getting some answers for yourself. Hang in there. |
