Thanks, but my surgery has been put on hold. The insurance company has decided it is not "medically necessary." READ: they don't want to spend the $$. The docs and I are appealing the decision.

Someone from the peer review board called my neurosurgeon and told him that the board was denying the surgery request and that I should continue with the nerve block steroid injections. Evidently they haven't read the letter that the 5 nerve block injections thus far have done nothing to alleviate the pain and given me back the use of my arm. So, at $1200 a pop for these useless injections, how long will it take to equal the cost of the surgery?

I am in the process of preparing a cost:benefit analysis for them using medical data that goes back to 2001.

Anyway, the one-winged, unemployed flygirl has not given up!

Thanks everyone and good luck tomorrow Jim!

And thanks for all the information Risby! And how's life without the hard collar???

barb02 04-21-2009 09:11 PM

I am sorry to hear that the surgery has been put on hold -- those **** insurance companies.

Friend2U 04-21-2009 11:56 PM

What a Bummer!

Things should not be this complicated...should they?!:(
Hang in there!

Taffy 04-22-2009 08:12 PM

That's a bummer FG!

You need that surgery!

Here's hoping you get relief soon!

Stupid insurance companies....:(

karousel 04-23-2009 07:57 AM

I'm sorry your surgery was put on hold -- those insurance companies :mad:.

tkrik 04-23-2009 08:44 AM

FG - Sorry about all the insurance stuff. I had to go through the appeals process for DD17. She had strep for months straight and the doctors (ped. & ENT) highly recommended taking her tonsils out. The insurance said no. So, I asked them to put in writing that they would continue to cover her for the rest of her life as the risk of her having lasting medical issues was getting higher. Would they pay for hearing aids, any heart trouble, etc. AND would they pay for the antibiotics for all the kids in the day care that she kept giving strep, compensate the parents for their loss of earnings as well as mine for having to take time off work to take care of the kids. I put together a packet of stats and the health risks of prolonged strep. We got approved immediately. LOL

Good luck doing your research and analysis. I hope all goes well.

JustJim - How are you? I hope all went well with your surgery and you are recovering well.

Aarcyn 04-23-2009 09:41 AM

Bottom line for insurance is money not the health of any individual. I am sorry the corporate institution gets to decide. I sure hope you can get the appeal. It is unreasonable for you to have been denied.

And Sandy, let us know as soon as you can.

SallyC 04-23-2009 10:36 AM

It's not Sandy's Jim, Cyn.

Check in JustJim and let us know how you are.

tovaxin_lab_rat 04-23-2009 11:40 AM

I hope Jim is doing well, post surgery!

Tricare is now requiring that I have another EMG! I just had one is January! I hate that test. It hurts so much ... but it's another hoop!

And Yes, Aarcyn, this big institution is TRICARE! I've never had problems with them. They've never flat out denied anything! But at least they are negotiating, NOW!

Oh good grief! Someone needs to do something about the health insurance companies.

Sorry Cheryl. I know this just prolongs your pain :(

Jim, I hope all is going well with you.

Koala77 04-23-2009 04:58 PM

FG, I've been away for 5 days and have only just seen this thread, and I'm so very sorry to read that your operation has been deferred. I know how it feels when you get all psyched up for a procedure, only to have it cancelled. :(

I'm afraid I can't advise at all, because health insurance in the USA is so much different to our's in Australia, but what you wrote certainly does not sound fair.

Don't you just love it when health insurance companies profess to know much more about what operations or medications a person needs, than their own doctor does?

I hope the company changes their verdict so you're not made to suffer for too much longer.

Twinkletoes 04-23-2009 08:09 PM

Cheryl, the cost:benefit analysis is a really good idea. I hope that convinces them to do the surgery.

SallyC 04-23-2009 09:06 PM

Sheesh, Cheryl, I hope the Ins. Co sees the error of their ways..

Feel better..

EDIT...BTW, Jim has reported he's doing well, over on the Cervical Surgury thread.:)
