A quick hi!

In st augustine right now, at a hotel for the night. dh started work tody\ay, then we took a lovely ride down th coast, checked out the St augustine lighthouse and had dinner at the Gypsy Cab Co.

Gotta go there if youre ever in town.

The light house was on ghost hunters, and we made it all the way up, over 200 stairs!

I feel so much better in the balmy air, can't wait to be here for good.

Hugs to all:grouphug:

Yesterday, dh went to work and left me to my own devices.

:D

I took a cab over the bridge into town and hiked all over St Augs all day, like 8 hrs. The cab driver told me to look down - there was a replica of the Nina and Pinta in harbor. I'll post pix as soon as I get them loaded. Very cool.

In town, there was way too much to see in one day - Ripley museum, a wax museum, the oldest house. ect.

I opted for St George street, and checked out - LOL! - the country's oldest running drug store!

St G's is almost all little shops and places to eat, a pedestrian street. The weather was gorgeous, sunny with a breeze, ahhhhhh....

One little alcove was all art; paintings, pearls and such, really really nice stuff.

I ate coconut shrimp at the Florida Cracker, so good when I told dh later, he ordered me out of the truck, lol.

:p

Great place to spend a day noodling around. Plenty of A/C places to go in and out of, benches to sit and rest, friendly folks to chat with. Fo a few bucks you can get a 3 day ticket on the tour trains, that stop all over, pick up/drop off at your hotel and almost all points in town so you don't have to walk.

Last night we pulled in to Sanford, which is NOT St Aug's/Satsuma at all. Yuck. Dh is bummed he got this bridge instead of Satsuma, but any job is better than none, and it's not like we hafta live right here in town.

It's like the rough side of Dearborn, but twice as much traffic and a lot warmer.

I'm so glad you're enjoying yourself down there, Brain! :)

The drug store must have had thousands of old bottles on display. And the scent of the old remedies was odd. There were big canisters of herbs for sale - every kind you can imagine.

They're so small, I can't imagine crossing the ocean in one of these. Just trying to load enough provisions had to have been quite a challenge. I didn't go and check them out, but wish i had. The tour wasn't open yet when I was up by the harbor or I would have.

Here's another shot. These were taken from Lion's Gate bridge, btw. You get a good idea of the size of the Nina and Pinta from the pleasure boats nearby.

Bummer I did not have the camera when we did the lighthouse. Took a couple pix with my phone, but I don't know how to send them.

Anyone who likes to fish, there ain't a bad place to be around here. You can swing a dead cat and find good fishing.

Awesome, Brain! How cool that you're having such a good time! It is a nice, little town and folks are pretty friendly. There is/was a great library near the western edge of town with some super old stacks, it might be a good diversion on a rainy day.

LOL, "rough side of Dearborn", since when does it have a smooth side?!?! :D I was just over there a couple weeks ago and I was quite pleased to come back home.

I've never seen those replicas, they're really that small, huh? You really have to admire the maniacs who crossed uncharted waters back then. No GPS and everything!

SallyC 05-10-2009 08:22 PM

Thanks Brainy, for sharing the neato pictures.

I think you can e-mail the Phone pics to yourself and then you can share them with us..:)

When are you coming home to pack and go back??

Sal - I'll have to call my phone co, because that option is not working. Anyhoo, I have to see how dh's job is going. But the plan is for me to stay till the end of the week.

Yesterday, we went to Titusville then up to New Smyrna beach and Pot Orange.

In Titusville, there is a nice pull-over with piers for fishing. This is on the Indian Intracoastal Waterway, if I'm not mistaken. I'm still not sure of everything that's going on around here, lol.

But we wondered if the water was fresh or salt. You'd think salt, being so open to the ocean. But there were *Beware of Gator* signs, and aren't they fresh water critters? And the fish looked like freshwater ones, too.

Here's a goofy shot of some gulls. I had Weird Al's song, another one rides the Bus, going through my head when I saw this. All the post tops were taken, and another gull is swooping in.

And there was a big crane fishing by the shore. The zoom really pays for stuff like this.

If you really want an easy way to start with wildlife photography though, go with blackbirds. They're just like my pet birds. I went up to this character and told him to smile pretty so I could take his pic. He sat real still, cocked his head, and waited for me to shoot.

Then he followed, screaming as I walked away - Hey, take another picture of ME!

:D

I think they feel left out, cuz all the other birds get all the attention.

I was 6-7 feet from him, talking to him. Other people got a real chuckle out of how the bird seemed to enjoy his 5 minutes of fame.

Have you noticed most people wear hats in florida?

Seagulls are the worst. Be careful!
