Do you Skip Shots?
For a very long time now, I have been faithful to taking my everyday shot everyday. At my last check up, they asked how many times I skip a shot. I said NEVER! why? am I allowed to? I was shocked when he said once every couple of months to take a mental health day off, or a massage day to work out some of those lumps, wont hurt you one bit. Ever since then I try about once a month or every six weeks to take a day off to do a full massage on some of those leftover lumps.
Do you skip shots? how often? What do you tell yourself to justify it? I am such a by the book kinda girl, that even on those massage days I feel guilty. There are days I sit with that needle in my hand, and have such trouble bringing myself to do it, but I know if I start skipping days, it will become a habit. Do you skip shots? |
I have only missed once, when I was in the hospital. Knowing me the way I do, I figure if I take a a day off it might be habit forming and I'll end up taking more days off than shots. I don't take a daily shot though, so it has got to be harder to stick with the program day in and day out.

I've been really bad lately...sometimes I skip 2 days...I either forget or not in the mood to hurt myself. I'm tired of the regimine...
|
Every now and then I do a drug free weekend. No 4-Ap or Copaxone. I still do my dose of LDN because its so innocuous and I love the dreams. I especially have no problem not doing the belly shot.
|
When I was still taking shots (for about 3 1/2 years) I never, ever skipped one. I'm very routine oriented.

I'm really bad about skipping shots. (copaxone)
Couple of times a week probably. When I first started tho, I did pretty good for about the first year and a half... |
In December, I took a two week vacation from Betaseron. Then at the end of January when DH had kidney surgery, I took a week off because he's the one who gives me my shots.
I also missed two doses when we visited my BIL last month. I think it's getting easier for me to miss a dose or two without any guilt because I'm going downhill and contemplating stopping Beta at my 3rd year mark in October, and not taking any more of the DMD's. |

I'm still going to do the shots for awhile, but I'm not going to worry much if I miss a few days. |
Jim and I forget sometimes, maybe once a month. It's every other day and sometimes you just forget. He takes it when we realize it but like Azoyizes we're beginning to wonder if it even works. He used to take Avonex and stopped due to the side effects but we skipped that one even more because of that and his MRI was clean. Who knows?
|
I forget sometimes. At one time I switched from taking them at night before bed to taking them in the a.m. after my shower. It was harder for me to remember in the a.m. than at night as I was more focused on what I had to do that day. I now back to doing them at night.;)
|
I'm also a rule-keeper, by the book type of person, and for the first two and a half years, I think I only missed one shot (Copaxone) and that was not deliberate.
The last few months, I've had a bad day here and there, and just said, "nah, not tonight." I've never read anything (or don't remember) that indicated a change in efficacy if a shot were skipped once a month, once a week, whatever. There's no way they can really "prove" anything about this stupid disease anyway. If I get worse, does that mean the Copaxone isn't helping? Or does it mean that if I weren't on the Copaxone, I would have gotten a LOT worse? If I skip one shot a week, does that mean I'll end up in a wheelchair two months sooner? Does it mean I've interrupted the system and it won't work at all? Does it just mean I have less in my body so it works less efficiently? This isn't a good day for me to be answering this question, I guess. |

I guess it's all a big gamble. I was told that I could get worse in the future without the shots. Well, I took the darn shots and I got worse. Would I have been even worse than I am now if I hadn't taken the DMD's? No one knows for sure. |
I have to admit that sometimes I wonder if it makes a darn if I skip one now and again. The success rate is so low for this stuff anyway, and I get miserable with lumps, and so on. The MD said a mental health day break can be more beneficial than being on this every single day no matter what. Sometimes it beneficial to be naughty for a day. I could have hugged him. Till then I had not missed a single shot unless told to by the MD, and was ansty about it. After 2 years of being on this, I am not so panic stricken anymore if I miss one once a month or so. I do make it a massage day if I miss.
|
I had to take a refresher on giving meds and I had to learn to give glucogon and insulin shots. Just that training threw me that weekend, I had the hardest time giving myself my shot for some reason.:Scratch-Head:
I'm one of those by the book people most of the time. I take Avonex once a week, I do pretty good unless I take a break from doing my own shot. I've let my hubby give it in my arms and then I had a really hard time doing it myself again. I can see how you can want to miss a dose, every day would be hard, sometimes if I've had a bad reaction I fine myself thinking about it all day and dread it terribly, but I still reluctantly do it. |
I have not been taking the Avonex with me when I travel. Take the shot the night before I leave, then the night I get back. With week long trips this only changes the shot a couple of days. This year I am going for a little over two weeks, still won't be bad.
|
I'm on Avonex so sonetimes it's hard to remember every Monday night. But I do have a huge problem with procrastination. Or is that just an excuse? So I have done some really bad things like take a shot that I had missed on Saturday and then my regualr one on Monday!!! I think one week I actually took two shots at one time. Yes, I am bad.

Beta for me....
...every other day. Have to write it on my calendar, cause they all start running together....BUT, THANKS for the reminder, seriously!!!!!!!!!!! Tonight is shot night! Gotta open my new shipment! :o
|
Dej, I can't remember if I talked about it at the time, but I had arm spasms from injecting there and my Shared Solutions nurse told me to skip the arms and do 6/7 shots weekly, doing 2 shots in the stomach.
Prior to that, I was a faithful 'shooter' :p. Of course now, I don't even do any shots. |
I've been doing my Copaxone every other day (ideally) for a couple of years now with no terrible effects. Sometimes I can't remember if it's shot day or not, so I might miss an extra day just for good measure. The cost was just breaking my bank account, and when studies started to come out showing every-other-day dosing to be effective, I jumped right on that bandwagon!
|
I've been inconsistant lately.... It has been a rough year and I've been letting it get the best of me but I'm trying to get back on track. I've taken my shot every day this week and I'm going to take it today!
I find my mood affects my ability to stay on track, when its a rough day I'm more likely to skip my shot and I've got to stop doing that. The best we can do is try , try again when we slip off track and get back on. I know god doesn't give me more than he thinks I can handle but some times I wish he wouldn't trust in me so much . Take care every one. :grouphug: |
Actually, Dej, I skip them all now..:D But, when I was taking them...I never skipped.
|
I skipped yesterday. I had a bad day, and just couldnt talk myself into it. I did however make it a massage the lumps out day, and as long as I do that, I dont feel so bad.
its so easy when you skip one, to start making excuses to skip more. a slippery slope indeed. |
Missing a day here and there Dej is like taking a mental health day. Nothing to fear! :)

I did not vote. Like Msarkie, I intentionally give my Copaxone shots less frequently. I had also read the research that indicates that once every other day injections are just as effective as daily injections.
I inject only in my abdomen, rotating to four different spots. I made this decision, due to pain that resembled a bad tetanus shot at other sites (thighs, arms, hips). Shared Solutions does not recommend using one spot more than once per week, so, since I use only my abdomen, I inject only 4 times per week. When I told my MS Specialist what I was doing (several months after the fact), I thought she might not approve. However, she just said, "We do what we can." Initial results seem to indicate that Copaxone may be effective for me, even at this reduced fx. I acknowledge that the study regarding every other day injections used a small sample group, and, therefore, is considered to be less valid than if a larger sample had been studied. But, I am hopeful that the results for me will remain positive. ~ Faith |
