The Secret Lives of Squirrels???
Oh my, now they are going to put transmitters on squirrels in Chicago and track them....find out their survival secrets in a big city.
http://news.yahoo.com/photo/061211/480/cx30112110426 Cooper could have a few things to say about those backyard clowns! :D |
Oh for good grief. :icon_rolleyes:
I think they should put some of those tracking devices in our politicians. :D |
Those guys should contact me because I know where most of the squirrels go and I'm sure Cooper knows the rest.
You can find the majority of them in my parent's backyard running up and down the trees and eating all the corn my parents give to them and the birds. That's so CUTE, bless their hearts!, the way they fold their wittle paws in to keep them warm. |
I think I just found my favorite emoticon that could probably sum up my life (if it had to be summed up, LOL)
:Demonstration: NO MORE SQUIRREL TRACKING, NO MORE SQUIRREL TRACKING, NO MORE SQUIRREL TRACKING!!!! ...said the crowd. Then they peacefully laid in front of the research vehicle to prevent it from carrying forth their duties. :D |
Well you really made me laugh Doody and I needed that....am sooo
ticked off!!! |
When we were little, my brother brought home a baby squirrel in his hat. We all new about Skipper, except for the two most important people in the house, my parents. He fed Skipper Oreos. My mother had this large antique baby square grand piano and one morning after we had all left for school she heard the plink plink plink of the strings inside that piano. She went in the living room and opened the huge cover to it and out popped an escaped Skipper. Skipper took refuge from a hyperventilating mother on the top of the china cabinet where he remained until poor Robbie returned from school...Mommy had taken refuge in the front seat of her Pontiac.
After explaining that Skipper was his friend to no avail, squirrel was placed in cat carrier and after stopping at grocery store for one last package of Oreo's, Skipper was released in a park where he promptly ran back into Pontiac and placed himself under dashboard on car. Several hours into the wee morning hours and after said dashboard was removed, Skipper scampered up a tree and bag of Oreos was placed at bottom of tree. Tired mom and brother return home, babysitter paid and mom faints at the sight of Robbie's room totally destroyed after months of squirrel habitation. |
Julie..Your story made me laugh and laugh!!!:D
Very cute..Thanx for sharing it with us. My older brother found a baby squirrel in his backyard a few years ago.He took it in and bottle fed it and nursed it back to health for months and months and took care of this squirrel. He named him rocky! He kept him in a very large bird cage that he had while he wasn't at home. When he was at home, that squirrel had the run of the house-just like a dog or cat! It was pretty funny to watch him!! Well when springtime came he felt it just wasn't right to keep him inside anymore..so he set him free.It seems the lilguy really didn't wanna be free..:) For the longest time he would set a bowl out by the back trees with his food and nuts-but that squirrel never went far!! I am not sure how long it stuck around-but i know it was a long time..Just thought i would share that cute lil story with you guys! I hope the squirrel tracking is stopped as well...I mean seriously-someone has waayy too much time on their hands to think this up!!! |
Kell...I saw the sign and want to report that I've been a VERY good girl..
And I love the squirrel stories! |
LOLOL! Squirrel stories, I love em! Thanks!
I have a more morbid squirrel story, only 1 though. When I was a little girl and had my younger sister always following me around, well we were out playing. We saw a squirrel get run over in the street and just freaked out! It didn't move and was quite, well...he died. We ran out into the street to get him and cried and cried! I picked him up by his bushy little tail, and started walking back home. Me and my little sister, big tears streaming down our faces. We walked into the backyard where mom and dad were putzing around. "DADDY! The squirrel is dead daddy! We have to bury him where Tinkerbell is daddy!" My mother screamed, "OH MY GOD put that thing down! It might have fleas and diseases!!!!" It was bleeding profusely, lol. We just cried harder, so my dad, blesshis heart, came over and said, "Find a nice shoebox and we'll bury him by Tinkerbell," and he did. We had a nice little squirrel funeral service. A BETTER story is about their squirrel that would come to parent's door everyday one summer. So, they would open the door with peanuts in their hands, and it would come right inside! It would sit on the carpet inside the door and eat the peanuts right out of their hands! Amazed me. Then he'd happily prance away and run up a tree. :D |

DOWN WITH SQUIRREL TRACKERS!!!!! |

When Scott was probally 1 or 2, we went to a park in Tulsa about a 2 hour drive from where we live, and we were feeding the squirrels peanuts. We were sitting on those concrete benches facing out. Scott was in ricks lap. A squirrel jumped onto Ricks leg hanging onto his jeans and bit scotts middle toe. I guess he thought i was a peanut. We took him to the dr just to make sure he didn't need a tetnus shot or anything, and the dr said all was well that squirrels dont carry rabies. That never even crossed my mind!!!!

Oh poor baby toe!

Oh.oh...
I just saw this thread yesterday. How funny are those Star Wars squirrels!
I love the light sabers too! Thanks Curious! My hubby esp. We have a large wooden birdfeeder outside the dining room window. We have had it for a LONG time. It has a squirrel baffle, and greased pole, and nothing nearby to jump from, and we have a new athletic squirrel..my husband says is the size of a cat, and I have to agree, who gets in there and throws off the heavy cover and trashes it all. He's wired it shut..to no avail. Yesterday he watched and watched, and he looked to the side of a nanosecond (that is his word for the time frame), and super squirrel managed to get in there again. We still have not seen the technique. But after seeing these Star Wars squirrels, I am thinking ours must be beaming in from the Starship Enterprise. Or at least teleporting in from another dimension?:D |
beam me up.....lol... i cracked up when first saw that picture mrsd. it was called " Park Wars". |
LOLOL! That is SO FUNNY!
Mrs. D, I think you may as well just give it up and feed the squirrel. In fact, I found the perfect squirrel feeder for you. The Squirrel Go Round, 2nd on on the page, LOL. http://www.heritagefarms.biz/squirrelfeeders/ |
This is one of the squirrel feeders my dad uses, the Squirrel Hopper. His is a single though, only room for 1 ear of corn. It's absolutely hilarious to watch them eat from it.

L O L
That is so funny, Doody.
You know we put out goodies for those squirrels.. old cereal, stale nuts, etc. They are very well fed! But this one must be a decendent of "MA".. that was a female from several years ago who nested in a hole in the big oak tree off our front stairs (we live on a high hill). She was very tame, and even followed us into the living room if we weren't careful. She was nice, polite and my hubby was fond of her. Her decendants are very strong, healthy critters as a result of our generosity so we have only ourselves to blame!:p |
LMAO! That is SO cute and so funny!

In honour of this thread, I have changed my avatar from the photo of the chickadee on my hand.
I took this photo last Christmas when I was visiting my parents. They decorate a tree outside on their balcony with strings of peanuts in the shell and suet balls ......... for the birds. The squirrels think the peanuts are for them, however, and they just sit there in the center of the tree and stuff themselves. One year when I was at my parents place near a lake in the summer, I was going outside late at night and something shot past my head in the dark. I pointed the flashlight in the direction 'it' went and I was most surprised to see a squirrel hugging the tree behind me! We never knew there were flying squirrels out there and it had to have soared from far away as there weren't any trees in front of me. :Hum: |
|
Flying squirrels are beautiful!
A long time ago when we were young...no child in the picture, we were up North, and late at night the heavy oak back door would rattle. Now this is a split door, like barns have. It is so heavy, the wind cannot slam it shut.
Well in the night , BAM... BAM. This was before we had larger wildlife, bears and deer. Our island was pretty sparse then animal wise. So I had the typical... nudge the husband...GO SEE...Protect ME. It took several years for me to get used to the place..spiders, animals, very very dark nights (no lights). Several nights go by.... BAM BAM... So I finally made him LOCK the door. Now this prompted a fight of sorts (disagreement)...that doors are NOT locked there and he would not do it. So I did it! He was such a sour puss over this. Then a few nights later I got up to go to the outhouse, and upon returning I saw the reason the door was going BAM. A flying squirrel was coming down a near by cedar and jumping on to it for some reason. Given the inertia, it was enough power to really rattle the door (which in my imagination was being attacked by a bear at least! ). So the mystery was solved, and we unlocked the door, and enjoyed the new discovery. Flying squirrels are really pretty with huge black button eyes and smaller fuzzy little tails. I still chuckle over this story...about what a scaredy cat I was, how young we were, etc!. And the squirrels were lovely, and we are the only relatives up there who have actual experience with one. (they are very shy). |
Ohhhh Mrs.D....we have a history with flying squirrels..they are so inquisitive and so cute...I just don't like having them in my house.
We live in a 130 yr.old farm house with a fieldstone foundation and let's just say that it isn't tight....Our poor dog Cooper was going crazy, barking at the kitchen ceiling and one night I came upon one little guy walking around on the top of my washer, just staring at me so I knew we had to do something! We have a summer kitchen, just off the kitchen and we had already chased a possum out of it so Mr.Alffe hired a guy to tighten everything up and put some paneling up. While the guy was working one of the squirrels jumped down onto his shoulder...ran down his arm and out the back door. LOLOL The only time I see them now is when I put peanut butter on the trees and we get into the hot tub at night.....tho come to think of it, Cooper was barking at something in the kitchen a couple of nights ago. |
LMAOROF at Jaded's link! LOL! Too funny. Now THOSE people put a lot of thought into their squirrel adventure park! :D
MR. D???? A sourpuss!!!??? There was a fuzzy adult squirrel on my daughter's porch this morning. Granddoody giggled with delight. The little bugger was eating catfood my daughter leaves out for some stray teenage cat that comes there to eat everyday. My son in law calls my daughter 'Squirrelygirly'. Such miracles around us. I've never seen a flying squirrel up close. Now I know how it's little 'wings' look. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn3nzXcCGbc |
