Mom going back into surgery

Sigh, unfrippinbelievable. Mom went to the surgeon this morning for a 4 week ? recheck of her left arm that had the repair surgery.

It's all undone. She has to have the surgery again this afternoon. She balked, and they said if she doesn't have it done she'll never regain use of that arm.

Crikies.

The good news is, she's been released from the nursing home and only has to spend one night in the hospital after the surgery.

mrsD 05-12-2009 01:32 PM

How frustrating!

I hope it works this time.

Koala77 05-12-2009 05:59 PM

I'm sorry too Doody. I hope that all goes well, and the surgeon's able to achieve an excellent outcome this time.

You and your mom will remain in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us up to date.

watsonsh 05-12-2009 06:10 PM

Many troughts, prayers and :hug: Doody.

Atleast its not a long term stay. It will be over before she knows it. Better one night in the hospital than loss of the use of that arm.

Doody 05-12-2009 08:57 PM

Thanks everyone. She went into surgery at 4:18 and was in her hospital room at 8:18. I was beginning to worry it took so long.

When she came back up to her room it was like before. She was sobbing and gasping and gulping and moaning and tense as a board.

The doctor explained things to us but I can't remember it all. Her bones are shot and he said one of them just split open and undid everything. She now has more wires and screws and another plate. When they removed the staples from the first surgery, there were 36. I wonder how many there are this time. Ugh. I am still appalled that in all the years she's seen her doctor she has never ever had a bone density scan...ever!

I told him that all this time in the nursing home they have been doing physical therapy on her arm including moving it around in circles, up and down and such and I wasn't happy about that. He was surprised and said she shouldn't have been having that therapy. Well...really now.

She had fentanyl in her when I left and I suggested to the nurse that they may want to resort to ativan again as that was the only thing that calmed her down in the hospital 4 weeks ago.

Please, I'm sorry I haven't been here but I just, well haven't felt like it. My brain goes on overload when I try to get through a lot of the posts. So any absence is simply a selfish act of self-preservation. And I've been SO busy at work and it's been stressful busy so that hasn't helped.

Thank you so much for your well wishes and prayers and concerns, I truly appreciate them and all of you. Of course you are all always in my thoughts on a daily basis.

More lows than highs lately and you all know how that goes!

Much love, Nancy

Lara 05-12-2009 10:49 PM

Love you, Doody.
You look after yourself too please.

Sigh....
Give your mom my love and take care of yourself. I am here if you need me. As always.

FeelinGoofy 05-13-2009 08:20 AM

Nancy You and your mom are in my prayers....
How is she doing today?

Doody 05-13-2009 08:27 AM

Thank you all.

She fared pretty well actually once she calmed down. She slept pretty well. this morning her main complaint is how sore her throat is (from the tube).

I remember... last night the doctor said the inside of her arm has everything in it but the kitchen sink.

Hopefully, she goes home today. That was the doctor's plan anyway so we'll see.

And she said the pelvis pain is much better than in the beginning. Still 'paining' her, but much better. I can't believe my folks now say "I'm a'painin." "My hip is paining." "My arthritis is painin me this morning." What is that? lol

I love you guys.

(My mood today...irritated. Bruna pee'd on my bed last night which has a new quilt on it.)

Doody 05-13-2009 08:30 AM

Oh, and my mom said this morning to tell you all, thank you so much. She's touched by 'strangers' concerns and prayers.

Chemar 05-13-2009 08:47 AM

Doody 05-13-2009 09:26 AM

forgot to add...she has to go back in a few months??? to have some of that hardware removed. lovely

Nik-key 05-13-2009 01:58 PM

((Doody)) so glad your mom's surgery went well. I hope this time she has a full and fast recovery!! Keeping you all in my thoughts

Doody 05-14-2009 08:04 AM

Well, she's still in the hospital. Before they were going to release her something happened with her heart. They hooked her up to monitors and a heart doctor is coming to check her out today. I have no clue what's going on. The pulse is really high and irregular. That's pretty much all I know right now.

Alffe 05-14-2009 10:01 AM

She has really been through a lot! Sending love and prayers Doody.

Curious 05-14-2009 10:24 AM

awwww Doody...Alffe said..she has been through so much already. :(

Check in when you can. I have kept her in my prayers, even though I haven't been posting much.

da duck 05-14-2009 12:00 PM

((((((((((((((Doody)))))))))))))))))))))
I hope they get this figured out soon and she can go HOME...where she will be much happier and things will even out.
And you can get some peace.
Love you...

Doody 05-14-2009 03:56 PM

I sighed big before starting typing lol.

They took mom this morning to have an..I don't know, echogram? They sedated her and put something down her throat to look at her heart and lungs for clots. She was in arrythmia?

After that they were going to shock her heart. But, while the heart doctor was looking he 'tickled' (he called it) the heart muscle. Really, just the scope pushing against the heart, and voila. The heart muscle went into a normal rhythm on it's own. He said he had seen that happen only a few times.

So she didn't have to get shocked. When she woke up, she said she felt much better.

They were more worried than I knew. He said she was in danger of cardiac arrest or stroke so it had to be done right away. and they don't know why but are guessing the stress of the surgery yesterday.

They are putting her on several medications including coumadin, some heart thing and some blood pressure thing and well that's really all I know.

I think I may have an alcoholic drink after work.

:thud:

DM 05-14-2009 04:44 PM

Oh my gosh, Dood! Your poor Mom has been through so much and you have, too! That was totally remarkable about her heart going back into rhythm like that~ guess she was in good hands.

I hope you take some time for yourself, put your feet up and have that lil brewsky tonight. Poor Bruna~ I'm sure she felt the tension and strain you have been under for her to have a little accident. Our doxies' (I have 2) are very people orientated and know when we are stressed.

Take care Dood and I'm keeping you, your Mom and lil Bruna in my prayers.

mrsD 05-14-2009 04:46 PM

Oh, gosh. At least it happened in the hospital...at home it could have been a different ending!

There is a research bone cement coming soon...but not here yet.
It would have been ideal for your mom... dang!

Was she in A-fib? This happens in the elderly.

Koala77 05-14-2009 04:58 PM

I'm so glad that your mom is doing better now Doody. Hopefully now you'll be able to stop worrying quite so much.

Alffe 05-14-2009 05:17 PM

He tickled her heart.....:D I can't stop grinning over that.

Doody 05-14-2009 06:11 PM

Thank you all very much, you are such good friends and support.

After it was all done I went back to work to get away from it and for those who know me, work is usually the last place I wanna go.

Yes, Mrs. D, she was in A-fib, that's exactly right. Ms. Koala messaged me about it and explained it more clearly and it's exactly what happened.

The heart doctor thought for sure that after the echo they would have to give her a 'shock' to her heart. Yes Ms. Alffe, lol, he called it tickled. And as I said, he has only seen that happen a few times.

They showed us the graphs of her heart from while they were doing the procedure. The graphs looked exactly like the ones on this web site. Before he 'tickled' her, her heart rhythm looked exactly like the chart on the bottom. Afterwards it looked exactly like the chart directly above it. http://www.a-fib.com/Overview.htm

Quote:

The American Heart Association states that A-Fib is a major cause of stroke, especially if you're older. It estimates that 15% of strokes come from untreated A-Fib. An A-Fib stroke is worse than other causes of stroke. 23% of A-Fib stroke patients die, and 44% suffer significant neurologic damage. This compares to only an 8% mortality rate from other causes of stroke.

There is also a danger of "silent" A-Fib strokes where stroke effects aren't evident but may appear like attention deficit, forgetfulness, and senile dementia. Silent A-Fib is very common. Up to 30% of A-Fib patients are unaware they have A-Fib.140 25% of those with A-Fib stroke had no prior diagnosis of A-Fib.
Good thing for any of us to know I guess.

And here I thought they were making much ado about nothing and that it was her anxiety taking over. Shame on me.

Thanks for letting me unload and in return you give me all this loving support.

Doody 05-15-2009 01:32 PM

Okay, this is hard to believe but she is home! They released her!

Everyone collectively now knock on wood.

Return

Hi Doody. I've been in Madison for a root canal and out of touch with everyone. So glad your Mom is finally home after all she (and you) have been through. I'm a sucker for happy endings. Love, Barb

Doody 06-09-2009 02:57 PM

Well I'm back. :(

3rd time, mom goes back into surgery at 4 so I'll have to scoot along. They were going to take some of the hardware out of her arm in 3 months...but apparently a plate and some wires have moved out of place again, and are shoving into her flesh. They're worried about infection and gangreen so they are just going to remove most of the hardware period.

Put her back in a cast. HUGE HUGE SIGH!!!!!!!!! I have no idea what this means for the future of her arm. I've only talked to my dad and well...hopefully I'll get more on the story from the doc.

Alffe 06-09-2009 03:40 PM

Oh not again already! Poor lady. Sending you all positive thoughts doody for a successful outcome this time.

Wren 06-09-2009 04:17 PM

Doody 06-09-2009 09:50 PM

I'm home, she's out of surgery and back in her room. And I got the scoop from the surgeon.

Apparently 2 weeks ago at that checkup they determined that she had staph infection, so they put her on an antibiotic.

However when she went in for her checkup today they discovered the plate and screws had come loose and the plate had forced its way through the large incision. The doc said he had to take the hardware out immediately for fear of the staph infection. He didn't want to take out the hardware for another 4-6 months but said this was too serious to leave it in.

He did say the tissue inside her arm looked good but he's very concerned. He's having an infectious disease specialist see mom tomorrow to determine what course they need to take. He said it could mean inserting an intravenous tube into her arm which he said would require her going back to the nursing facility to receive IV treatments for the staff infection.

When he said that, my poor tired dad looked as if he would just fall over right there on the spot.

She thought she would just be staying the night. She doesn't know yet that she can't leave until Friday.

The one good thing is that they will remove the splint/cast on Friday. He said her arm is healed enough to go ahead and remove it, but that it's still a very delicate situation.

I didn't even know she had staph. crikies, even my mom and dad didn't realize it was staph. Apparently they didn't pay attention at the appointment 2 weeks ago.

These guys better get something right here pretty soon!!!!!! She's been through too much as it is.

Thanks you guys.

Doody 06-10-2009 01:42 PM

The infectious disease doc had a line run into her arm and up and around down to near her heart. She will get an infusion of vancomycin every day for 6 weeks but can go to the clinic to have that done. Thank goodness she doesn't have to go back into that nursing home.

Now if her arm will just heal.
