Total numbness in limb- Scared
Hi,today after resting I woke up with severe burning pain in both ears,(normal) and my right leg is toally numb, my thigh all the way to my foot. It is as heavy as a dumbbell trying to lift it to walk. Infact I can not walk with it with out heavy support of my cane. I have never had full limb numbness
Infact, numbness has not been an big part of my RSD. I have sections on my spine that have no feeling, ditto on my leg but not numbness. This is frightening me- not sure what it means. But I do know it couldnt be good. It is my orginal injury leg.You can see all of my veins but this is normal - they are always swololen during flares in that leg from vascoconstriction- very painful. Should I see medical help?? My leg feels like it weighs 200 pounds. thanks CZ very wroried |
I'm very sorry to hear that you're experiencing this problem.
I don't know who you use for your medical support, but, I'd be on the phone with one Immediately! Total numbness can be serious. Do you have a neurologist? After you've moved around a bit do you get any feeling? Any changes? I'd guess that your neuro would have you go to the ER. So, My personal answer to your question, "Should I see medical help"? Is a Definite YES! I hope you find some relief, and healing! Pete asb |
Yes I suggest calling dr too or ER.
It could be a blood flow stoppage somewhere:eek: like when my arms fall asleep if I have them over head or under my pillow while sleeping. Especially call or go to ER if it doesn't normalize quickly... it might have been a positional thing if it does return to your normal. my arms normalize as soon as I change position but it takes me awhile to get them moved around since they are pretty much dead up to my shoulders. I have to use my shoulders to swing/fling the arms out to the sides.. but then they go thru the pins and needles while the blood is returning. |
I agree with the others... seek immediate medical assistance!!
This could have happened by the position you were sleeping... but it is also possible that you have a blood clot that is preventing blood flow or a nerve is pinched somewhere causing your leg to go numb. Complete numbness is never good if it lasts for very long. Please let us know what happens and how you are feeling! Abbie |
i agree.. the only time that i have had that feeling was medically induced.. but it is definatly a huge problem i hope that you called your doc or went to ER..
hang in there carrie |
Any news yet?

Hi CZ,
So sorry that you are dealing with all of this right now - I can't imagine how scared you must be!! I agree with what the others have said to call your Pain Management Doctor/Neurologist ASAP and see what they say or go to the ER. I have had numbness before but it doesn't sound as bad as yours. My numbness usually occurs when my RSD limbs are really swollen. When it first started happening, my PM Dr was very concerned and did an ultrasound. The results came back OK but showed that I had severe muscle swelling which was probably pushing on the nerves and affecting the feelings. I really hope that it is nothing to worry about and you are most definitiely in my thoughts and prayers!!! Please speak to your doctor about it and keep us updated when you can - you shouldn't have to be dealing with all of this!! Thinking about you. Alison. |

My legs are always numb. My left leg where the rsd started is of course the worst, but they don't stay numb 24/7 either. That makes me worried there may be something else going on. I hope you've gone to the doc. Keeping you in my thoughts until you're able to update.
Hugs, Karen |

Thak you for all your help- blood clot in leg
Well thanks to all of you Im probably going to be ok. I have been referred to a vascular surgeon. the vascoconstiton from rsd in my orginal leg is so severe, on top they think i did have a clot in my leg. I was very lucky and should have gone to er right away as you said. I dont know waht will happen when I see vascular surgeon but looks like i may be put on blood thinner. i was really lucky- this could have gone to heart or brain. and caused a stroke. I go on thursday of next week. total numbness of a limb especailly with sudden onset is not normal- for anyone(this is what they told me) - rsd or not. I assumed it was another form of tortue form my rsd. That coupled with my sister could have cost me a great deal. Im still upset and frightened by the scare. thank you all very much for your help so so much. I will let you know what happens thursday. my very very best to all. I also can not thank you enough for your kind words and thought about my sister Cheri, she is still doing well- will not need open heart surgery and will just be on meds. this is the third person in my famiy with heart disesase or stroke so I guess my leg makes sense with the pattern. It's so scary what we suffer with rsd and what we ignore thinking it is more rsd, this was too close for me. my very best to all God bless, cz

Thankfully the clot was spotted in time! You were very lucky!

Thank you again so much-- jsut wanted to clear up
Hi thank you all again so much for your thoughts about my sister and myself. I think I need to be clearer on what I posted, they did not find a blood clot with the ultrasound, however they felt I had -had a blood clot and that it colud have been very serious. the vascular doctor i am soing to is well know to my family he treats my little sister who has had a stroke and my father who has some problems with his legs. So I am going to be checked out by him. they the er, think i might need to be on meds. thank you again for every thing. Sincerely, cz
