Ever heard of PMU horses?

Read down into this horse's adoption to see the story of what happens to PMU foals and mares. I find this unforgiveable. I mean, I am for some controversial medical things, if they save lives or cure/reverse devestating diseases. But this? Unbelievable.

I just can't bring myself to read it...:(

doydie 05-20-2009 09:54 PM

That is just terrible. I wish I had more than just my little back yard.

Jomar 05-20-2009 10:53 PM

Seems they should be able to make Premarin ,Prempro and Premphase type of hormone replacements some other way by now.
Synthetically or something.

[What is a PMU/Premarin foal or mare?
PMU stands for Pregnant Mare's Urine.
Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy drug (HRTD) given to women during menopause. It is made by extracting estrogen from the urine of pregnant mares. Other HRTDs are made from PMU as well, such as Prempro and Premphase.]

SandyC 05-20-2009 11:10 PM

I didn't read it yet but I think I know. I stopped Premarin because of what I found out about it. Me and menopause just learn to live with one another.

I have hovered over the link several times, and just cant bring myself to read it. Just cant do it.

Animal cruelty makes my heart rip open.

Me, too. I can't read it either. But I have a pretty good idea of what it's about.

I can't even watch the animal cruelty commercials where Sarah McLaughlin is singing........I cry just listening to the song. I wish I could help them all but I just don't have the $$ or the room.

One way to help all animals is to go to the Animal Rescue Site @ http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/c...faces?siteId=3. It's an easy way to donate just by clicking an icon and there's also an online store. I visit everyday!! :)

There is synthetic estrogen. It doesn't need to come from a horse. :( I've taken the synthetic form for almost nine years now and it works just fine.

I can't read it either. :(

SandyC 05-21-2009 08:43 PM

What's it called Wiz so I can ask for it if I need it. Thanks ahead of time!

I can't read this kinda stuff either.
A bit off track but how do DMD's come from hamsters?

I take a very low dose of Ogen (the brand name) the generic is estropipate. I take .625 mg and have since I had my hysterectomy in Dec of 2000.

 Back at you...:)

I knew they use pregnant horse urine to make hormones, but what I didn't know is that they have PMU horses. They are like the puppy mills.

I e-mailed a friend of mine who owns 20 horses and sent her the link. She e-mailed back that a friend and neighbor of hers actually rescues PMU horses and finds them good homes.

This is all so very sad!

Jules A 05-22-2009 12:52 PM

Thank you for raising awareness. A relative of mine adopted a Premarin foal. He is an adult now and loved very much but from what I understand could have been slaughtered if no one took him.

It is very cruel and as someone said similar to puppy mills. Why we as a society allow this type of thing to go on is beyond me. It makes me ashamed to be a member of the human race. :(

Thank you for saying this.

I did not start this thread to make anyone feel guilty - how could anyone know how this stuff was made? They just rx a med and we think it''s just another med. If you need it, you try it....

I am going through menopause (or mentalpause, you decide) with no meds, and I'm fine like this. But know there are those who have a hard time and need something.

Just thought this is not how meds need to be made - or if they do, we need to think about how do we help the animals who help us?

I don't know what kind of house I'll end up with, but i'm thinking if I do buy a place with a few acres, I may see about foal rescue.

Dh is pushing for a small farm, and he should know by now if there is room for a pony, there is gonna be one - or more...

If you ever do have a farm most rescues will even provide the food and vet care while you foster. DH and I are hoping to get a small farm some day and do this also...or a huge farm with our own rescue if I ever hit the lottery. :)

Wow, with a pony, who needs plants? :D

We have a show horse farm nearby that I drive by on the way to work. They have tiny colts now. I need to leave a little early so I can stop and take pics and movies of the adorable little things with their mamas. :)

SandyC 05-23-2009 06:05 PM

We have a horse farm here that allows those with disabilities come and ride the horses. Wiz, I should call them and we can all go riding!
