Arm hair
This is a silly thread, but I'm feeling the need to ask a stupid question:
has anyone thought of or actually waxed or used a hair removal cream etc on their arms? I;m not sure if it's the steroids or what, but I have a lot of dark hair on my forearms and with summer and short sleeves coming on i'd really like to bare them without looking like 'm a descendent of the Planet of the Apes! It's strange because my lega dn underarm hair has virtually stopped growing - I used to have to shave almost daily to get rid of stubble, now it's more like once a week (another pred blessing i guess, just like Erin's big boobs - I too can empathise with that Erin, went from a 36 C to a 36 E!! Husband is happy). Anyways, I'm getting off topic - arm hair.... What should I do? All suggestions welcome as long as they will reduce the chance I will be mistaken for Chewbacca this summer. :D ~Kathy |
Hi Scots Kat!
Hey hon! I can totally relate -I call it my "wookie" hair! LOL! It is growing in nicely! What a sight!:D
I am thinking about dying/bleaching mine for the summer! My stepson told me I have more arm hair than he does! It is sooooo true! B/4 the pred I was hairless, but it's all relative!:D I guess the big boobs are our one compensation! You may want to look into a fake tan as well - the spray on kind! They are ez and make everyone look slimmer - bonus!:D Since we are not allowed to really enjoy the sun, for ME the spray on tan has worked really, really well! Mike and I are going to Alaska in few weeks - God willing - and I want to look my best!:D You are tooooo funny! Your planet of the apes comment was the best! Hope this helps! Big hugs! Erin:hug::D Quote:

OMG! I just tried the Nair exfoliate cream! It really worked....okay...no laughing..:lookaround:..I tried it in the bikini area....hair just "wiped" off after 8 minutes....with no trimming done first.....but the stubble grew back the very next day!!....as if I shaved!!! I thought that stuff took the hair out from the roots....and the smell....the bathroom smelled like I just gave myself a perm!
I am sooo scared to get a wax job! I hate pain. Quote:

Hi Kathy! I just saw something on either QVC or HSN that you use to yank your hair out. Sounds owee, but I guess it actually does get the roots, so that the next time its not so painful. They say you can use it everywhere except your eyebrows.
My daughter and her husband both shave their forearms. (I don't know why!) But my arms already look like I shaved them -- I have virtually no hair at all (none that you can see, anyway). That doesn't bother me, but my eyebrows are disappearing, too, which I don't like. I didn't know that a tan made you look thinner! *runs off to buy some tanning wipes Note to self: this year, let the tanning stuff DRY before you pull your pants on, so you don't look like a zebra! :o |
I saw that sanding stuff they sell it at walgreens, & on TV , you just rub the hair off. They say it isn't rough on your skin, I haven't tried it yet, but have been thinking about it !

After reading your posts ladies...I've decided to just put up with mine!:D
|
Thankfully my wookie hair is pale, I'm a redhead and my arm hair is blonde/pale red.
and my Under arm hair to is practically nonexistant, I shave about every 2-3 months, I use to shave every second day..................one good thing I guess about medication. |
Man, was I cheated! LOL
:DOK ladies, I have been royally cheated! Not only do I have facial hair and sideburns, but now I have to shave every flippin day! WTH? :D
I am truly a wookie! No fair! Soon I'll be shaving my back! LOL! Thank God I go down to 20 mgs this month! Cannot wait! Until then I'll be getting my weekly eyebrow wax - soon to have the full body wax! Should be fun! Hope you are all feeling GREAT today! Big hugs! Erin :D |
:pI'm a little reluctant to post this, but here goes....One very amazing thing has happened since I started on Prednisone, my armpit hairs don't grow anymore, and only lightly on my legs. I know, that's unusual, but I'm not going to complain, or, and since being on CycloSporine, my hair has gotten very curly! Some times it looks like I've had a spiral perm. Again, won't complain too much now that my whole head does it, but at first, I'd just get the "boing" of a spring of hair on my bangs. Now, it's more generalized..:D
Love Lizzie Oh, and P.S. Prednisone did inflate my boobs, and I didn't need any more in that department. I asked my neuro, and it was confirmed, it was from prednisone, it does that a lot to women.. |
I am so jealous!
Lizzie- I must admit I am sooooooooooooo jealous! I have hair growing out of places I knew existed! Not really, but my wookie hair makes me very self concious! I just want to feel like a WOMAN again! My hubby tells me how beautiful I am all the time, but I ain't buying that! LOL! He is so sweet, but I do miss being (somewhat) pretty..........oh well - c'est la vie! Big hugs! Erin Quote:

LOL, Erin, I'm sorry, but, I have to confess, I have a couple of hairs on my big toes. Wasn't certain what that was about. If I allowed them to grow, I probably could put tiny pony tail holders on them. But I can't complain if that all I get, oh, and those two wiskers on my Chin! But no underarm hair.
LOL..this is a grow subject...lololol:D How's the GoGo juice? Love Lizzie |
Hi Stephanie,
I wish I had read this post BEFORE I tried the Nair cream on my arms - I had the exact same reulst... wiped off hair in 5 mins, but then stubble the next day! Now it's even more of a crisis because now I have hairy - stubbley arms!! Sheesh, will I ever be feminine again?? I have noticed a decreased leg and armpit hair growth but increased facial (something I never had trouble with) and arm hair. So weird how it depends where it's growing. My head hair has changed too - when I was heavily medicated I started loosing a lot of hair (not sure if it was down to the pred or the azathioprine) and now that it's coming back in it's really coarse and curly (I've always had iron-board straight, fine hair) Its like 2 "do's" in 1. My hair dresser makes fun of me when I go in. Anyways, thanks everyone for the feedback - it's just nice to know I'm not alone in my "cousin It" state. Take care! ~Kathy Quote:

I've developed a hairyish face, luckily the horrid thick hairs are pure blonde, (which is wierd seeing as I have red hair) but they are only sparse, so I pull them out(ouch).

I can totally relate *sigh*
Seriously, ladies, we have been screwed!:D I don't mean to sound crude and ugly, but really - what gives?
We have gained weight, gained facial hair, suffer from night sweats, our (well some of our) faces BALLOON when we are exposed to the heat......... That being said, I am still soooooo grateful to be HERE with my fellas. I love my good days - I appreciate them in a way I never did b/4 the MG. I just wish that it wasn't a "toss-up" - pretty or healthy. I know I've talked about my Gram a lot. She had a heart transplant back in 87 @ the age of 55. She was always so tiny and elegant, but after the roids ravaged her she gained enormous amnts of weight - her once beautiful white hair turned black @ the roots, her face ballooned and no longer looked like herself. She NEVER complained though - EVER! She was so amazing and stong. The reason for this story is that she did look like her "old" self after a couple of years, so don't give up hope!:D:D She was a truly stunning woman -looked a lot like Vivien Leigh - gorgeous, so I know it must have hurt to lose her looks for a while, but she was just so grateful to be alive. What a fighter!:D I was so blessed to have such an amazing role model! Big hugs to all! Erin:D |
I have the SAME thing!
Hi LIzzie! I have the same thing! I was getting a pedicure from a lady who has done my feet for years and she asked me why my toes were so hairy - talk about mortified!:D She then proceeded to wax my big toes - without asking first! I thought I was going to lose it! LOL
Fortunately, we are friends so she does my weekly waxing (face), but yuck! Cannot wait until the roids no longer make me look like a wookie!:D I can say that my skin looks great!:D I have a healthy "glow" now. People tell me that all the time! Hang in there, honey! Your sense of humor is always welcome! You crack me up! Erin:D Quote:

Hey guys,
I wanted to share my prednisone-induced creature-like hair growth...lol...I was driving the other day, it was a sunny day and that time when there are lots of shadows...Anyway, I looked at myself in the rear-view, and the monstrosity that looked back was frightening! lol...Don't get me wrong, I'm exagerrating, it wasn't that bad...but there was definately a morning-shadow in the afternoon! lol...I've got these long blond hairs growing all about the chin region...Some black, thick ones growing alternately, I've got an 80s-dude-stash a 'sprouting and neck hairs... I'm trying to figure out the best way to deal with this...I don't want to get it waxed because my skin is really sensitive and the last time I did that, I ended up with blisters...I've decided to pluck the ones I can see, because there aren't too many that it'll take me a century to get the job done...I'm just worried that it'll get very thick...Does it? Or is it sorta random creatures growing sparsly... P.S. Did anyone's period stop after taking the prednisone? Thanks! Nicky |
HI Nicky!
Hi sweetie! I finally bit the bullet and had my arms waxed - not a bad experience @ all! It was done over 2 weeks ago and still no HAIR! YIPPEE!:D
I also have my face waxed every week and it is slowly stopped growing back - more good news! I DO NOT have sensitive skin, though. I think that plucking or laser hair removal would both be good options. Don't worry. Once your meds are cut down, the hair will go away! It really will! You are so beautiful that I bet you are the only one who notices - not so for me! LOL!:D:D As for the periods - I WISH! I now get 2 a month! 2! I am miserable enough to be around when I had them once, so I REALLY feel for my fellas!:D How are YOU today? Are you OK? Love, Erin:D Quote:

I used to wax forearms for years. It hurts - but only for a quick minute. And it doesn't have to be done again for around two weeks (sometimes 3 - like in the winter). I finally got sick of it and just started to use a razor every day in the shower. That was so easy and painless, I stopped waxing.
Someone told me that shaving would make the hair grow back thicker - but that, I think, must be a tale. I didn't see any difference between the wax and the shave. I'd try shaving first - - and if you don't like the results, then after a week or two you can wax. Good luck! Sue |
Hi Nicknerd
Your not alone, my periods stopped completely on the Steroids.
When I went to the Oxford centre of excellence and informed the consultant, she told me steroids didn't make your periods stop! Despite the fact its written in the patient information leaflet. When I was on steroids I noticed my lip hair grew thicker, Im naturally blonde so it looked like a teenage boys moustache! I also grew really soft hair over the sides of my face. What fun! Love Rach |
Oh my goodness, I soooo needed a good laugh today and this did it! It has been so long since I was on Pred that the only side effect I remember was putting on 50 pounds..LOL But hey if it makes our boobs grow, I may reconsider using it..LOL, cheaper than a boob job :) as for the hair thing, I was blessed with very little amounts of hair, only have to shave maybe once a month :) and my hair is curly, now that I think of it, it did curl more when using the pred.
Again, thanks for the laughs everyone. |
You'll never guess what I did- it was a rash decision...:o...lol...I took your advice, Sue, and I shaved my face sorta...I feel so weird...like my bf and I will be fighting over the razor in the mornings...I imagine arguments over shaving cream and sink time between us 'dudes.' lol...i don't think I'll do it again...I'm really worried about it growing in thicker, but we'll see...imagine? That'd be terrible...I also noticed that my boobs have become larger, like what you mentioned, Joan...So a large-boobed woman with a beard, slurred/nasal speech and a double-chin like it's no one's business...Oh boy...I'm just kidding...just making light of it...I'd rather have some weight gain and a dude-stash than all this muscle weakness...Both can come off in due time...
I thought that I may have been imagining the plumpness in my face, but it was confirmed today by a tactless acquaintance...He's like, "you gained some weight, eh?" I'm like, "not really...Seems to be in my face only..." he's like, "true." lol...Why are people so generous with negative comments regarding others' looks? I would never say something like that...It didn't bother me too much because I knew that the new fat-distribution was bound to happen, but it reflected on him, you know? I felt like saying, "You have a receding hairline," but why would I say that? It's like telling someone that they have a mullet. Yes, the person has a mullet, all business in the front, all party at the back, and? Sorry, wanted to mention mullets for some reason...lol Anyway, end rent. Hey Rach, I mentioned the no periods to my doc. too and she seemed to be surprised as well...I think it might be an uncommon side-effect...I wonder why that would happen and others, like Erin, would get extra ones...These pills are so weird... Thanks, Erin...You are so pretty too! When the hair comes back, I think I might try waxing it...I have heard that it comes in more sparsly from others too... Nicky:grouphug: |
Hi Nicky
I don't know why the drs are so surprised as obviously the drug company are aware of it as a potential side effect.
When I told the specialist at Oxford, I had the distinct impression that she was trying to tell me it was because I was so fat that I wasn't having periods. I had put on three stone so around 42Lb and I was a big girl anyway.I'd gone up 4 dress sizes and developed a hump on my back. So as you can imagine I was feeling really attractive! LOL Love Rach |
Eeeee - I got a hump too!!! It's not too bad, I don't think anyone other than me would notice, but it's there!! I also have a spectacular double (or could it be triple) chin and a belly that is bigger than my fellow teacher's who is six months pregnant! Pred is awful, but I really do need it.
So back to my monkey arms that started this whole thread - I used the hair removal cream but my hair grew in stubbly within a couple days, then I shaved which lasted a bit longer but had the same result, the longest result I had was from plucking (sounds rediculous, I know). It was time consuming but I was watching a boring movie with my husband one night and just sat and plucked away. Bad news is that it did eventually grow back in and now I'm back to looking like I'm auditioning for Planet of the Apes. Take care everyone! ~Kathy |
Lolol
I've been re-reading this thread, and you'd think we all lived in a tent that goes from town to town..lol
I've been going through so much lately, that I really needed this laugh. Not only has my stepfather been diagnosed with cancer, and has been put in hospice, but my husband's stepfather is in the mist of chemo, and radiation for prostate cancer. My stepfather has anywhere from a month to 3 months to live, and it doesn't look so good for my husbands stepfather either. On top of that, we have another family member whose kidney cancer has spread to his liver. he's only in his mid 50's. And then my poor stepfather-in-law's mother past away last week. So I really needed a smile. This thread sure did it. We sure are a mess aren't we. But have to be thankful for Prednisone, and hate it at the same time. Love Lizzie:hug: |
