I just discovered that my blueberry beer (wild blue) that I like has 260 calories in one beer......
very sad...
just for the record and a reminder:

guiness= 165 a pint
beamish= 195 a pint
world wide stout dog fish head= 372-12 oz
wild blue= 260 -12 oz

2 ounces of gin plus diet coke = 128 calories and 0 carbs

befuddled2 06-09-2009 04:45 AM

Bizi,

I need to give up the beer and booze next cause of the calories. I hurt all over to walk today but pledge to eat healthy.

Dmom3005 06-09-2009 08:43 AM

I am working on eating healthy for both my weight loss and diabetes.

But I am very thankful for this thread. I'm not doing so well with it
right now. I need to get back to the store and buy my veggies.

I am also very much drinking water. Its something that is very good
for those of us that need to loss weight and learn to not drink the
wrong things so much.

My main drink otherwise is diet coke because I can drink as much as
I want. But then I have to watch the caffeine if I'm doing that.

Its a no win for that either, it has other problems. I love tea but
tea gives me headaches so I'm really working on things to drink this
hot summer its water.

Dr. Phil McGraw's book

Hi,
Have any of you seen Dr. Phil's book "The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom"?

He's basically into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy so his book is about changing your environment and your thoughts and so on to help you be successful. He also talks about finding supportive people.
He emphasizes eating "high yield foods" (filing foods) instead of food with empty calories.

I like the questionaires he has.

He says that weight loss has nothing to do with will power -- it's about establishing the right environment and the right situation.

The book is in paper back or maybe the library has a copy.

M.

befuddled2 06-10-2009 06:16 PM

Mari,

I bought that book by Dr. Phil many years ago but never finished it.

I did not do good today as I went out and bought a bunch of Hershey kisses. My nerves have really been shot and I couldn't take it any longer.

Dmom3005 06-10-2009 07:03 PM

Well I am doing pretty good. Had a hamburger and fries for lunch.
And yes they say fries and a hamburger can be okay for diabetics
so it must be okay for dieting.

Then had roast beef, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese at MCL for
supper. My thing I shouldn't have had was cheesecake. But it was so
good. And I just couldn't resist dessert.

I felt really good, when I was with Derrick today one of last years mom's
or advisor's for the activity he did. Recognized me, and even asked if
I had lost a lot of weight. Not that I would have thought the amount
was that much but sure felt nice.

Donna

befuddled2 06-10-2009 07:30 PM

Donna,

That is good for someone to notice you lost weight. I just put on baggy clothes and people think I've lost weight. I'm going to make my tight pants baggy by Really losing weight. Right after the chocolate is gone.

fruits and veggies

Hi,
How many fruits and vegetables would you say you eat in a day? I need to increase mine.

Andrew Weil says
3-4 fruits a day
and
4-5 veggies a day
http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02995...d-Pyramid.html

A little chocolate is fine on his plan! :D

M.

bizi 06-11-2009 11:10 AM

well i know that I don't eat enough fruits and veggies for sure.
I jsut bought some v8 juice to drink, that has 2 servings of veggies in the can. I can't afford to eat that many fruits though I know that I should.
yesterday was a bad day as I went to a last minute dinner party that had a buffet, crawfish fetticcini alfredo sauce....many other things that were fried.
today is a new day
~sigh

Mari 06-12-2009 04:21 AM

broccoli

Hi,
Bizi, thank you for this this thread.

V8 juice is good.

Frozen fruits are just as good for us as fresh fruits and cheaper (also they are flash frozen close to the field and have not sat around in trucks like "fresh" fruits have).
http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recip...s-fresh-fruit/
I have a small bag each of froz blue berries and peaches I bought to use to make smoothies -- have not done that yet.

I wonder what else I could do with frozen fruits other than put them through a blender? Any ideas?

I bought some bunches of broccoli earlier on Thursday but did not cook when I came home.
I will steam and eat them on Friday.

Then I will write up a list of fruits / veggies that I can stand AND that I can cook on my own if Hubby is not here to cook.

M.

bizi 06-12-2009 09:49 AM

I have heard this about frozen fruits and
food in general....it makes sense.
I'll be back later must run off to work I am late as usual!

dogodlvr 06-13-2009 08:35 AM

Glad to see this

My biggest fear, next to loosing my job is weight gain. I told my doctor I will not take a med with certain weight gain side effects...I will stay wacko first.
My history is lifelong weight problems. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2006 and have done very well with it, I do not want to go back there after going through all of that. I also have just been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia...my blood sugar drops when I eat sugar..dangerously low if I eat too much..... so I have to stop.. my research found that Bipolar also reacts to sugar....so my goal is to cut it out, along with white flour....told to give up the caffine...not ready to do that yet, and I do have a drink a day
How do you do on your meds with cafine and alcohol? I know its recommended not to have either
Pam

bizi 06-13-2009 05:11 PM

I drink caffiene it has anti oxidents and is shown to help reduce your risks of parkinsons and other ailments including Diabetes if I remember correctly.
they reccomend around 3 cups a day.
IMO it is ok but check with your primary of course I am not a doctor it is just what I have read in my nutrition news letter.
Mari, you could throw in frozen blueberries into cereal or pancakes and i like eating fruit that is frozen along with chocolate:eek:
this is why I have a weight problem also because of the increase in my meds....
beth

bizi 06-14-2009 07:53 PM

I did pretty good on the diet today.
big slice of cinnamon friendship bread that hubby makes
coffee
Had 3 fruits: banana and 1/2 c.blue berries. 1/4 of a cantelope
1/4 of a muffaletta sandwich left over from yesterday...I usually eat 1/2 at a sitting.
2 cups of cucumbers and tomatoes with red wine vineagrette
6 oz poached chicken and green chilis
water with a little diet cranberry juice.
75 calorie small dark chocolate bar-full of anti oxidants!
hubby and I walked after supper...it was hot. about 1 mile is all.
I am going to watch a movie in a bit(revolutionary road with kate winslet) and have a cocktail V8 juice(which has 3 servings of veggies) and vodka and a bag of lite pop corn. I miss my blue berry beer....sigh
so hopefully I will stick to the plan and not over endulge.
beth
I should figure out the calorie content for today.

Mari 06-14-2009 10:52 PM

hi Bizi,

Dear Beth,

Wow. That's a good number of fruits and veggies. I am going to work on that in the upcoming days.

You folks in Louisana have great food. :)
A piece of a muffaletta sandwich sounds delicious.

Today was my third day following the WW diet.
This was my first step / first goal. I wanted to have three days on plan and I feel good about that.

I record what I eat at their on line site and can see the overall picture for the last week for example.

M.

Next:
add fruits and veggies
add exercise

Mari 06-14-2009 11:21 PM

Hi ,Beth

Here is a good gov web site that tells you calories and that lets you track for a year:
http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov

M.

bizi 06-15-2009 12:08 AM

I use a site called www.smartpeople.com
I have used this site before they have all my old info and favorite foods set up so it is easy to keep track of things. I also have a calorie counter place that I can look up special foods and nutrients, it is called the calorie counter:
http://www.thedailyplate.com/

good for you for making it 3 days!!!!!! way to go.
today was my first real day and I stayed at 1500 calories, did not have the alcohol or pop corn because that friendship bread/cake
IS SO fattening...I had no idea.
so I had a cup of broth wehn I started getting snacky.
the v8 juice was good with some cajun power garlic sauce...spiced it up a bit!
I never have that many fruits in a day....
beth

bizi 06-15-2009 09:44 PM

Well I am still full from a big dinner but am content knowing that I stuck to my calorie count and we walked again after dinner about a mile or so maybe 2 ....walked for about 45 minutes at a steady pace.
Fruits and veggies again to day must do some paperwork before bed.

Food experts say that food industry knows how food triggers the brain

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/louise..._b_195676.html

David Kessler (MD at Yale) has a book out about how the good industry supplies and packages food
that excites the neuro circuitry in our brain. He says knowledge is power.

Quote:

DK: Fifty years ago, the tobacco industry, confronted with the evidence that smoking causes cancer, decided to deny the science and deceive the American public. Now, we know that highly palatable foods—sugar, fat, salt—are highly reinforcing and can activate the reward center of the brain. For many people, that activation is sustained when they're cued. They have such a hard time controlling their eating because they're constantly being bombarded—their brain is constantly being activated.

For decades the food industry was able to argue, "We're just giving consumers what they want." Now we know that giving them highly salient stimuli is activating their brains. The question becomes what do they do now?

If a bear walked in here right now, you would stop listening to me and you'd focus on that bear. We're all wired to focus on the most highly salient stimuli.
For a lot of people, that highly salient stimulus is food. It could be alcohol, it could be drugs, it could be gambling, but for many people, it's food. It's not just people who are obese, or overweight.
Even for people that are healthy weight, food activates the neural circuits of their brains, and they have this conditioned and driven behavior we call conditioned hypereating.
This guy has some youtube videos explaining his research.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/200...marion_nestle/

Nutritionist Marion Nestle (prof of nutrition at NYU) has a similiar message in her books about the food industry

Quote:

You begin with some simple health recommendations: eat less, exercise more and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Why is the American food industry so at odds with those goals?

Because they don't want us eating less, of course.
The American food supply produces 3,900 calories a day for every man, woman and child in the country. That's twice as much food as we need.
So, if you're in the food business, you've got to figure out a way to sell it.
The choices are to get people eating your product instead of somebody else's, to get people to eat more in general, or to raise prices.
In that situation, obesity is collateral damage.

What are some strategies food companies use to make us eat more?

Larger portions. If you put a larger portion of food in front of somebody, they will eat more, even if they're not hungry, even if they're on a diet, even if they're a nutritionist. They're going to eat more. That overrides some kind of internal control.

Having food available is incentive to eat more -- just having it around.
And in fact, there's research that shows the closer the food is to you physically, the more you'll eat of it.

She also says that consumers should be aware of what is being marketed and sold to us.

I have been eating my lunch sometimes at a local health food store.
they use grain fed beef, free range chickens, organic fruits and veggies.
I had 1 c. collard greens today in chicken stock, 1 c.steamed brocolli, 3 small halves of stuffed bell peppers with soy cheese and brown rice, 1 1/2 c.fresh fruit (mostly apples and pears) salad.
Am very full. I over ate, but that is a problem of mine.
I will have to eat a very light meal tonight!
Breakfast was 1/2 c cottage cheese, 1/2 cup blue berries, 2 big straw berries and coffee with french vanilla creamer. a protein water drink 50...all of that is about 925 calories for the day. I am shooting for 1300 calories aday. Since food is a major factor in my life...I am obcessing over dieting....so please bear with me.thank you
bizi

Mari 06-17-2009 07:09 PM

Beth,

That sounds great.

It is 100% ok to obsess over your new plan.
I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting since February. I think it is necessary to obsess about the diet.
I completely understand that.
M.

Mari 06-19-2009 12:32 AM

Hi, Beth, :)

Here is what I ate Thursday:

--2 cups blueberry soy yogurt

--container of hummus mixed with can of green beans
--large bowl of steamed broccoli topped with spag sauce from a jar

Late night sandwich made out of the following:
--2 smallish pieces of toasted millet bread
--1.5 tablespoons of macadamia nut butter
--1 tablespoon of raw honey

I'm under points / calories for the day -- weight watchers discourages that. I'll eat more tomorrow. ;)

I'm working on adding veggies and fruits. Each week I will do a little more.

M.

(I'm still eating mostly soft foods.)

bizi 06-19-2009 06:33 PM

I am doing good! and eating chocolate everyday!

Mari, good for you for being under points!
I have stayed around 1,300 for the day all week so am happy about that. Almost made a big no no with avacado one cup=386 calories that is a whole one, hubby would have split it but still I knew it was high but not that high!
beth
It has very good fats though!
I am still eating a little chocolate bar at night.
Last night I actually was able to have a bloody mary.
no such luck tonight!
I miss my blueberry beer!!!!!!!!!!

Mari 06-20-2009 01:31 AM

It sounds like you feel good about following your eating plan.

Hi all

I'm in a weird frame.

I've been eating fruits different daily.
Tonight its going to be strawberries.

I had a chicken strip for lunch. I wasn't very hungry.

And I've had mashed potatoes and green peas with cheese for supper
and will have strawberries soon.

I am just not hungry its so hot here.

I am trying to increase my eating.

We took a walk around the neighborhood and drove it to see what the distance was. Our walk is 1.5miles.
It was very hot today 98. our poor grass is dieing like everyone elses.
I had a very healthy day of eating.
AND by cutting back at each meal a few caloires...I actually get to have a blue berry beer and a mini chocolate bar!!!!:D

Abbie 06-20-2009 10:49 PM

I have cut nearly all carbs from my diet... cut way down on sweets... eating about 5 small meals a day... AND I'M STILL GAINING WEIGHT!!!! :(

I gained 5lbs in a week....

At this rate... I'll be 300 pounds by Christmas....

:mad::mad:
Abbie

bizi 06-21-2009 01:54 AM

the only way that I can lose weight is by counting calories.I try to watch my carbs , eat a high fiber light bread by natures own and low carb tortillas that are high fiber that is my bread intake.
I should be in bed asleep but just took a much needed shower and my nite meds so any time now, jeff is working on his nails going to try to record some of his cd tomorrow, worried about that, it has not been going well for him, keep your fingers crossed that it will work out ok for him.

bizi 06-22-2009 07:58 PM

WEll I found out today that my favorite sandwich at sub way
(turkey and ham flat bread) has only 350 calories!
They load it up with lots of spinach tomatoes, onions, peppers,
hot ones too and use their spicy mustard, no cheese.
I was so happy to figure that out!
WE ate a light dinner so I am very happy that with the movie we are going to watch tonight I am having a blueberry beer, a bag of light popcorn and my little bar of chocolate.
Such a decadant snack!!!! and I am following my diet!!!!!
I love counting calories...I know that sounds odd but it really gives me control of the foods that I should be eating, we have had more fruits and veggies this week then we have ever had.

Dear abbie,
this does not sound right. If one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories.IT doesn't sound like you are eating that much and that is alot of weight to gain in one week!!!!!
Have you had your thyroid checked lately? This sounds like water fluid retention, how are your ankles puffy?
Have you had a good physical?blood work to see if your electrolyte levels are normal?
there has to be some internet program that allows us to figure out how many calories we need to maintain a certain weight at a particular level of activity. So for me I would have to eat around 2,000 a day to maintain this weight...I am kind of making these numbers up as I wish I could find such a site. maybe mari can help?
You may have a very slow metabolism and only require a small amount of calories.
So if I only eat 1300 calories a day that is 700 less than 2000 x 7=4900 calories which is about 1 1/2 pounds of weight lost in a week.
Would you like some help coming up with meals?
I would help you if you like.
(((((HUGS))))
beth

Dmom3005 06-22-2009 08:47 PM

First cutting out all carbohydrates isn't a good idea. You should be counting
them instead. Its much better to eat a certain amount each meal and
then say 2 or 3 snacks a day.

On my diabetic menu its even 20 or so carbs for a snack. And I'm thinking
my breakfast and lunch are around 30 carbs but don't quote me.
My supper is 60.

Dear Abbie,

Are you going through a med change?
M.

Abbie 06-22-2009 10:21 PM

My feet, ankles, legs and most of my body often are swollen due to the RSD...:( It doesn't help either that I have a illness induced, sedentary life.....

Pdoc put me on Synthroid about a month ago... I'm on a low dose right now. Pdoc said my blood work showed my Thyroid levels in the low-normal range but he would rather they be in the high-normal range.

I'm not sure but I think he said something about upping this med soon.

I started gaining weight at a fast pace when I was put on Seroquel...
Seroquel, Lyrica, and Cymbalta all have weight gain in the side effects... Lucky me, I'm on all three.

I don't eat much... raisin bran with 1/2 cup skim milk for breakfast, Lunch is usually a lean cuisine meal, and dinner is usually chicken and steamed veggie... in between I eat yogurt (light) or cottage cheese... I constantly have a water bottle with me...32 ounce and I refill it about 5 times a day.

I can't wait to see how much I weigh when I step on the scale tomorrow...
