Ok, who sprinkled fever blister dust on me?
Good lord, I havent had a fever blister since I was a kid! I woke up this morning, and I have a honking one! Just in time for my MRI visit tomorrow. Maybe that will give me something to concentrate on.
I have been having bad night sweats, and night fevers. I am told that it may be the copaxone, or it may be the MS. I dont have a UTI, or URI as I was just at the MD, and its a part of my routine to get a urine dip to be sure. I did wake in the middle of the night feeling like I was on fire, and yet drenched in sweat. Great, now I look like a hooker.:o:p |
I keep getting fever blisters and I am not on any meds or have any stress in my life except those!!
I have had them at least two or three times a year since I don't remember when. Although there are expensive meds for them the healing time is the same...at least a week.:( Until it heals; I dont go outside the house except on the patio. DH does the shopping and errands because I am too embarrassed to be in public. Anyone have any ideas on what can be done to prevent these? |
I used to get them quite often. Haven't had one in some time now.....now that I've said that I'm sure one will pop up!

I hear the nutritional suppliment Llysine does good things. if you feel one coming on, take one. The abbreva stuff really does work, expensive at $20 a tiny tube, but oh so worth it. My neice gets them all the time, and swears by L lysine stuff. I havent had one since I was a kid, so I have no clue myself, other than the whole derailed train of thoughts that now everyone at the big city hospital will be staring at my lip. :o

Abreva works best if you start using it at the first sign of a fever blister developing. Usually there's a tingling feeling at the site the blister will appear. If you begin using Abreva as soon as the tingling sensation starts you can usually cut down the duration of the blister by a few days.

I get fever blisters. Not as much anymore but I do get them.
I took Llysine for a while. I cannot remember if it really worked. What does keep it from getting bad is simply ice. I wrap a cube of ice in a paper towel and keep the area numb. When my blister first appears, it is a pain, swelling and hot. Somehow the ice either makes it go away or makes it smaller or makes the duration of the blister seem shorter. This only works in the first 48 hours before it really starts to form. Ice can't hurt and sure is cheap.:) Maybe it will work for you. |
I must have had a whopper of a fever last night, as I woke up burning up, and drenched in sweat. I didnt have any tingle of my lip, but when I woke up, WOW! I had a monster on my lower lip. No tingle still, just a big ol honking hooker sore. A friend told me that Copaxone causes Herpes, and was teasing me that I had it now. I looked it up, and dangit if herpes wasnt one of the side effects. its really rare, but its there. now, you know exactly where my mind went.
The abbreva is helping, and it looks a whole bunch better than it did. Not touching it helps. I didnt get any L lysine. I never even thought of it when I was at the store. Another comical day in the life of being me. :D  |
I use the lysine on a regular basis and swear by it. There is also a lysine lip blam that works and it has a spf in it too!

Fever blisters (cold sores)
At the first sign of any tingling I put a little Blistex on the spot. That usually stops it from developing. They can be miserable. And they are contagious. So you shouldn't be kissing anyone anywhere, etc.:D And they can be spread by your fingers, etc. They are Herpes but a different kind.
Lots of things can trigger them. I probably got one way back when I was in school. Click on and review the whole page: http://herpes-coldsores.com/cold_sor...res_contagious |
As a nurse, I learned long ago not to touch my face, unless I am washing it. it was a hard habit to break. I have been keeping my hands very clean, and the DH says EWWW! run away! gross! (picture him acting like he is 10 and asked to kiss a girl for the first time. Cooties!) I wouldnt kiss him anyway, I wouldnt risk passing this crap on.
Went out for some home made ice cream at the local stop, and a neighbor wanted to eat some ice cream off my spoon. I had her go to the counter, and get a fresh spoon, and pick off the uneaten side of my sundae. I can never eat a whole one anyway, so she got to eat off a clean side. I was shocked that she would even consider using my spoon. Even if I didnt have this sore, I wouldnt share spoons with the lady! yick! It looks tons better, and isnt quite as sore. I felt like someone had smashed out their cigarette on my lip. Have you ever stepped on a lit cigarette? it HURTS! As the day has marched by, and I have been taking good care of my new friend, it is getting smaller, and going away. Thanks for helping me laugh at my new friend. |
I don't touch my face either and I am always washing my hands anyway. Personally, I do not share utensils with anyone. I just do not do it.:Noooo: Just me I guess.

OUCH!!! Sorry to hear your'e feeling ucky, Dej, but I read an article a while back that said to dip a cotton ball in Vodka and saturate the cold sore w/it. It's supposed to work; haven't tried it yet, as (knock on wood) haven't had to, but the article swears it works. If all else fails, mix a lil Bloody Mary mix in the vodka, remove cotton ball and "I" swear you'll feel better in no time. (grin) Take care Dej.

me and my big old hooker sore are on the way out the door. I dont drink, so I dont have vodka in the house, but the DH thought it was a good excuse to get some. he was kidding, but it took me a min to figure it out.
The abbreva is helping, but its still there. I woke up a couple of times last night, aware that I was touching it. it was tingling. I slathered more cream on it, which the cat wanted to smell. Good grief! Maybe will stop and buy a nip of vodka on the way home. I hear they make a great base for air fresheners since they dont evaporate like water. The DH said he hears they make a hell of a martini. Of all the times to get one of these bad boys, its when I have to go face dozens of folks. sheesh! way to go to the God of practical jokes. |
Besides the Abreva there are two basic things you can do for Herpes Simplex.
1) Being on immune blocking drugs is going to make outbreaks more likely for MSers. The Herpes virus activates/replicates when the diet is high in arginine. Also the arginine/lysine ratio can be manipulated to lower the arginine effects. One way is taking oral l-lysine tablets (up to 2 grams a day). The other is to avoid high arginine containing food. http://www.nutritiondata.com/foods-0...000000000.html and this link reverses the items, so take care in reading it. http://www.herpes.com/Nutrition.shtml 2) secondly one mineral that helps prevent viral outbreaks is zinc. Here are some papers about MS and vitamin studies. http://www.ithyroid.com/multiple_sclerosis.htm I think having a zinc/copper ratio tested would be a good idea before starting zinc supplements, however. Zinc is one of the nutrients depleted by Prednisone treatment. |
i used to get those a lot and it had gotten worse since my MS.
finally my dr put me on Valtrex and i havn't had a problem since. one more med but worth it to me. and remember especially not to touch your eyes! opthalmic herpes is no laughing matter. |
I KNEW IT!
Walked into the MD office to discuss the MRI, and he sticks out his hand, and shakes mine. says hello. Shakes the DHs hand, and says hello, then he said "so who is your lil friend?" and points at my lip! I said "OH HO HO HO! very funny! we call him Laylanna." (thats him name) I said "can we just get onto the business at hand?!" He giggled, and we sat down. I think he really did think he was being funny. |
Dejibo. I'm really not laughing (snort snort) but have lots of sympathy for your hurt as I stupidly reached across my extra hot getting curling iron, burnt my arm on underside near elbow . Every time I put arm on an armrest or pull self across bed - OOWWW! But paired with your wish for clean panties, it's an image and thought too much for me!! (snort. snort)

Oh goodie gum drops, its BRIGHT RED today! woo! my dreams have all come true.
It is kinda funny. I cant believe the Oncology nuerologist was making fun of it. he is a crack pot. I guess since I dont suffer with them all the time, and I have a really good sense of humor, I can get past this. Now, panties on the outside, and big fat hooker lip that has turned red, along with my patchy shaved arms (looks like mange) from the IVs, along with the bruises, and swollen arm from the GAD dye, I guess I am all set for the local grocery store today. My DH said "you going like that?" I told him I would lick his cereal spoon if he kept it up." GET IN THE CAR! thanks for all the giggles. |

My bet is that you'll have clear aisles to shop in and whoever is in line before you will let you go first. It'll be the quickest shopping trip in a long while for you.....I'll bet! Maybe if you black out a tooth right in the front..........:D |
I had one of those big ugly honking things, not too long ago, on my lip, inside my mouth and chin... I think mine was a cankor sore, though.. My DH would have gone to the store for me but not with me..:D:p
I don't think the Herpes Brothers like us PWMS.. |
