I have rsd in the right side of my face and every once in awhile the right side only turns bright red and it looks like someone drew a line right down the middle. You can put your hand a distance away and feel the heat radiating off my skin and I feel pain and burning, most of it in my cheekbone, like it's really deep. The left side is just normal feeling. With rsd, because it messes with every single part of our systems it can show itself in some pretty funky ways.

Hugs,

Karen

I thought I was crazy or had heart blockage or something like that. Who dx'd you for that in your face?.. I live in Arkansas and still looking for a rsd specialist close by or closer than Minnesota. I didn't think anyone would answer my question. thanks alot for answering me.. :~) The line right down the middle is exactly the way my face felt.. One side was cool and the other side felt like I was running a fever.. It seems like I have really went down hill just in the last month or so.. Heart rate off the charts blood pressure going up and down and now they have me going to send a nephrologist(kidney specialist) What next??

lexiemae1 07-19-2009 02:18 AM

Where did your rsd start at??

I got rsd in Feb 2003, over 6 years ago now from a broken kneecap I got a work from my knee saying hello, the hard way, to a broken handle. Except I didn't know the knee was broken until I had my first bone scan 5 months after rsd started. lol It was left knee/lower leg/foot and it quickly spread and it was in all four limbs by month 11. It spread from there into my back and face the last few years so full body now. I have a bladder thing from time to time that is not any kind of uti. I know exactly what rsd feels like so I knew what it was and my pain doc agreed it couldn't be anything else.

Hugs,

Karen

When I'm under severe stress, my neck and face will start to go totally red as well, I will get these awful red blotches. It's something that just happens and that I have no control over. And it's not as if it's a side-effect of meds, because I also had this when I wasn't yet diagnosed, when I wasn't on any pain meds yet.

This can happen during a car ride that takes too long, during a doctor's visit or check-up, when having tests done at the hospital, ... it's very unpredictable.

lexiemae1 07-20-2009 07:19 PM

Yes it is unpredictably, and I notice I get it the last couple times when I am really tired and in alot of pain, Like we went on vacation and I had it happen both nights at dinner, like I turned an alarm clock on and it just started.

bobber 07-20-2009 10:49 PM

Whats also weird is one foot is hotter than the other,,my right foot[the worst of the two]gets colder than the other,,maybe from poor circulation that comes from vasomotor interuption from rsd ,but after activity[aqua jogging it turns red and gets hot,,stings and burns like a sunburn,,its not uncommon for one side to be a different temp on me,,CRPSBE is on the money with the stress,,that makes mine not only flare but spread,,,,I pray for a remission for this whole group,,i wish the gov would more activly look for a cure,,,,,,,,,,bobber,,,,,,,,,,,,

I get the blotchy skin too! I'm so glad I'm not the only one, although I'm sorry you have the same symptoms :o

It covers mainly my neck and upper body, but also goes on my face. It even happened when I was at the hospital about my heart problems last week and the Dr hadn't seen anything like it. They were giant red blotches and I felt so hot it was like I had my face in front of a heater. I don't have it constantly, but have had it happen quite often- first noticing it about 2 years ago.

So this is an RSD problem? Can anyone explain it?

lexiemae1 07-21-2009 01:59 AM

What kinda of heart problems are u having? If u don't mind me asking. I didn't think I had any heart problems either but I had to get a ultrasound two weeks ago or so because my blood pressure was so high and I had been on blood pressure meds for a long time. It seemed like it just went sky high all at once.. So they took me off cymbalta and changed bp meds..

CRPSbe 07-23-2009 12:37 PM

I have no idea why this happens and I am guessing it has something to do with the RSD and with stress. It always happens when I am under a lot of pressure, a lot of stress or when I am very nervous for some reason. I do know that I don't handle stress the way I used to. I was extremely pressure-resistant until RSD hit. I lived off of stress before!

Maybe it's due to the nervous system reacting the wrong way, maybe it's part of it?

I do know that I don't have heart problems. I went to a cardiologist many years ago for a full check-up and he didn't find anything except that my heart reacted as if I were very out of shape; but no wonder - I could barely move due to the RSD. One test couldn't be completed, I remember, because I had to ride a bike for it and that was no longer possible by then.

Any suggestions for relief

My friend has RSD since 3/06 - first r knee - with SCS attempt with to both feet in OR (the pain was so bad they aborted the procedure).

Now looks like it has spread with a major flair in the face/neck/head/back.
This skin is bright red (some color changes around the eyes) hot (you can feel the heat coming off it) burning, itching and sweating.
3 ER trips now and tons of blood work - all normal. has sub grade fever of 97 to 97.4. He is in misary (can not stand anything to touch him) no sleep. Looks like he has major sunburn with skin peeling off.

Also, flair in left lower leg and foot - looks like the foot is being burned from the inside out to the point it has major blister that are now draining. Wound clinic said they had no idea and could not help.

Any suggestiong on how to deal with the upper body stuff. Now on 300 mg of Lyrica times a day.

Will see internal med tomorrow and the PM dr from Anchorge Alaska who comes here once a month (most times)/

I pray for all how have this horriable RSD.
Thank you

Hi Kate,

I've always had blotchy skin too, had it my whole life not just since I was diagnosed with the RSD 7 years ago. When my doctor saw it on my stomach he thought I had a rash, perhaps a reaction to something and given my history of allergic reactions it alarmed him. Ultimately it calmed down on it's own and was nothing that could be explained.

I have a friend with RSD, she occasionally experiences a drooping of her face muscles on the her right side. When she has her lidocaine infusion her face returns to normal. All the doctors had to gather around around her to watch the remarkable recovery as the lidocaine works it's magic on her.

I wish I could explain the red blotchy rashes that come and go but I've never been given and explanation as to the cause either pre or post rsd.

Does anyone else out there have any answers?

MsL

For me, it's my legs and feet. One side is ice-cold and the other is burning up. I will use my left foot like a "heating pad" to warm up my right foot.

I can't imagine that happening in your face. That must be difficult to deal with. I hope you can figure out some type of relief, no matter how minor.

I have extremely blotchy skin - on my chest, back, upper right arm and shoulder, neck and face. It "flares" more often in the afternoon and evening.

Hi SunshineGirl
Good question-RSD is an autonomic disorder. Which means involuntary organs affeced, circulation, temperature, heart, lungs. our blood pressure can be high and then LOW I'll drop 50 or more points both top and bottom numbers. I've even passed out when went too low. sympathetic nervous system may be 150/90 and then the parasympathetic nervous system may drop it 90/50 . RSD affects the immune system . My first system of RSD was frozen shoulder following surgery. PT told me after I got my range of motion back- it may go to other side After a year of remission -it went to the other side. Another remission. Original side- hand next frozen hand- year later moved to right hand. then down legs and feet- full body. Also is why we are burning hot sometimes, then ice cold.
Please stay with us-I learned so much from friends here- helps me cope.
Take care, loretta
