Self Analysis of the PWP
This could be an interesting thread, or it may just plop to the ground and lie there.
Much is made of the Parkinson's Personality. Its very existence is debated. While I don't think it applies to all PWP, I do think that it exits and is well represented on this board. It probably is a sub-type of some sort and differs from senior onset at a minimum. The "group personality" is certainly different than that of PLM or YOPD. Visiting those two makes me feel like a "stranger in a strange land" and it got me to thinking about our collective personality. I propose to begin a thread wherein that collective sits down with its therapist for a little self-analysis. This is on the group level and we aren't interested in hearing about the time you ________________ (fill in the blank, you naughty thing you :D ). I'll go first and show you what I mean. And if it works, part of it might be useful to the "book" folk, too. Remember, this is the voice of the collective self "on the couch," *********************************** I was raised to be strong and silent. It was not overt, but it was there. I can remember once lying in bed with a fever and facing the wall while my mother and another woman stood in the doorway. I overheard my mom remarking that I hadn't cried or even complained. There was admiration in her voice. ************************** Responsibility? Took to it like a duck to water! Not sure why. At least not at first. It was quickly reinforced, however, by the powers that be - parents, teachers, etc. It was less trouble to have a "good" kid around. Somewhere along the line I got tired of being "good". As the years have gone by "tired" has become weary. ************************** Pent up emotions? Well, there's something there, I agree. Can't quite see it. It seems harmless, now. But there was a time when I believed that if it should escape that the gods would tremble. I wonder why? *********************** Self sacrifice? Sure. Eaten up with it. It seems to have always been my job. By the time that I realized that I had been drafted, it had become a matter of choice. Anyone? |
take a Myers Briggs personality test
One thing you (any of you) might do is take one of the many versions of the Myers Briggs Personality Tests that are available for free on the internet. Here's one:
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp I have taken these tests many times over the years. Sometimes they have been required by employers - knowing my personality type and the types of my co-workers has often prevented problems in the office. The test is based on Jungian psychology; information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-B...Type_Indicator No matter how many times I take it, I always get the same result, so I think it is pretty basic to how I operate in the world. I am an ENFP (Extrovert; Intuitive; Feeling; Perceptive) My exact opposite would be an ISTJ (Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging) There are 16 possible combinations; none are to be seen as good or bad - they just ARE: how you operate. I always get a kick out of this! :) |
That is pretty cool. Nailed me, anyway.
I-N-T-J Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging, Handsome OK, I made the last part up. But give it a try. There might be a pattern. |
that was fun ..
I did it too - I'm almost your opposite, Carey...
and shared half of the characteristics with Rick ... ISFJ  |
Introvert, Feeling, Intuitive, Judging for me,
It must be reading all those books....... Lindy:) |
Your Type is ISTJ
Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging Interesting that the word Introverted is a common theme so far. Carolyn |
sorry Carolyn! Extrovert here!
My analysis came out as ENFJ! thanks carey. girija |

PWP types
Hi Rick,
Remember we had a precious thread on this topic.? I remember you saying Wanda and yourself had a good laugh when it was suggested a PWP was a nervous introverted type!!! I can't find it, but do you remember us joking about who we were like? It was years ago, could even have been Braintalk. Ron |
type and communication style
Carey, you are not alone...ENFPs unite! lol :)
I took the Myers Briggs 20 and 10 years ago, and this short version today, factoring out disease-related changes: all three indicated ENFP though I am increasingly more P and less J as the years go by. Am I the only one who could have guessed all our types with 99% accuracy from the writing style and content of our posts? |
Ron-
Yes, though that was many brain cells ago. :) It would be interesting to have 1000 PWP answers, would it not? Small samples tantalize. Quote:

I tried to factoir out my pd but i'm sure it was hard on some questions. Anyway i'm an ENFJ.

the Idealists have it
If you add the Kiersey Temperament Sorter to the Myers-Briggs Model, you get a fuller, more descriptive, profile. This is highly unscientific, but more fun! (see chart below and read more here)
So far, in our extremely small, non scientific survey, we have one Rational Mastermind (Rick); two Guardian Protectors (JeanB and dbiker2); one Guardian Inspector (Stitcher); and a whole bunch of Idealists: Counselor (Lindy, Conductor71); Teacher (girija, Paula); and Champion (Rose, Jaye and indigogo). I’d love to see more of these, because so far there is a 2-1 representation of Idealist Mentor/Advocates – (I’ve always wanted to do this at PAN to see if it attracts more of this type). Idealist types (NF) make up 16.3% of the general population; 70% of those self-reported here. We need more data! But there's a certain logic that this kind of forum would be populated by educator-mentor types. The good thing is if you are going to be successful at a project, like the book, it takes all types to get the job done; we all have different roles that we perform naturally and well. Even better is the prevelance of "J" over "P" (Rose - you and I are the only loosey-goosey "P's"). J's like to work towards a complete conclusion with full closure - P's are more inclined to want to keep things open and are better at idealizing rather than completing a project. Always been a major challenge for me when working with others! There are 4 Temperaments; 8 Roles; 16 Role Variants NF – Idealist (diplomatic) -----NFJ – Mentor (developing) ..........ENFJ – Teacher (educating) girija, Paula ..........INFJ – Counselor (guiding) lindylanka, Conductor71 -----NFP – Advocate (mediating) ..........ENFP – Champion (motivating) rose of his heart, Jaye, indigogo ..........INFP – Healer (conciliating) NT – Rational (strategic) -----NTJ – Coordinator (arranging) ..........ENTJ – Fieldmarshal (mobilizing) ..........INTJ – Mastermind (Entailing) reverett123, shcg -----NTP – Engineer (constructing) ..........ENTP – Inventor (devising) ..........INTP – Architect (designing) SJ – Guardian (logistical) -----STJ – Administrator (regulating) ..........ESTJ – Supervisor (enforcing) ..........ISTJ – Inspector (certifying) Stitcher -----SFJ – Conservator (supporting) ..........ESFJ – Provider (supplying) ..........ISFJ – Protector (securing) jeanb, dbiker2 SP – Artisan (tactical) -----STP – Operator (expediting) ..........ESTP – Promoter (persuading) ..........ISTP – Crafter (instrumenting) -----SFP – Entertainer (improvising) ..........ESFP – Performer (demonstrating) ..........ISFP – Composer (synthesizing) |
Carey, you are the same as me! - as of test taken formally in '97 or '98.

Tally from PLM
Posted the same link on PLM. Tally to date-
Tally to this point (N=12) 1; I=9; E=3 2: N=10; S=2 3: T=6; F=6 4: J=10; P=2 From NeuroTalk 1: I=8; E=5 2: N=9; S=4 3: T=5 ; F=8 4: J=10; P=3 Darned near the same. |
Rick - I'm not convinced there is any value in totaling the traits separately; they are only significant to different types of personality when combined. Let me know what you think and why because I could be wrong ----
|
I S T J. That makes two "inspector/certifiers", me and Stitcher.

here's an update of our types - where are the Artisans?

Actually what struck me about the list was how in character the definitions of people seemed to be in their roles...........if i had been given the list in brackets i would probably have put those people in those places based on their posts, and where their strengths seem to be.......... the role variants seem to be very precise......... or at least from this online perspective:D Lindy |
we are mostly left-brained, analytical, work with others, rather than artists, performers?

Nice to hear from you and join in any of these conversations..please. Be yourself when you feel like it. [oh you know what i mean....] When I saw that I came out judging, i was at first reaction disappointed but soon realized it meant discerning, - a challenge from where i sit, but so interesting. Greg D you have a great story or 3-4 of them. Plus you were in Hawaii at the time of the cows being detected, and there are a few others. Would you share for for the book? Greg D was previously 'boilerman". good guy, has been thru some heavy ____, but has a great sense of humor under it all. It never would have been designed to be a book with all women. Rick you dance around us but i haven't a clue if you are going to do the book so I'm thinking you just aren't sure. I went to your site....can you post it again? I have asked Anne a coujple of times to reprint her manifesto and she seems to be rewriting it? can she post in book forum any sooner? it's private......they need to see it - it takes you places, we all benefit even if we don't go to the same place. Anne what do you think? are you up for copying it to the book forum and see what you think, then make any further modifications and on to the regular forum? ok thanks all, this is like a mountain stream....we're all in inner tubes. musings from an ENFJ paula |
Paula,
If you are a teacher (as ENFJ), judging goes with it! Doesn't it? I am surprised at how close this analysis is to personal characters of people i know. I am for sure is an ENFJ trying teach people, especially the ones I think have a good potential! There I go judging again! Girija (ENFJ too) Quote:

Finally found time.
I am INTJ Introverted, Intuitive, thinking, judging. Not sure where we are going, we have as many extroverts as introverts. Always felt PWP were anxious worrying types Ron |
What does it all mean?
While confusing, it is interesting to see tha there is a pattern of I**J that seems common. It helps to, as indigogo suggested, look at the Kiersey work. It tends to reinforce the idea that we tend to be the ones who get things done within our sphere. Some would call us boring (although any woman named "harley" should challenge that :D ) but without us it would fall apart.
Wow. I just made a Freudian slip in the midst of a Jungian meditation - pretty cool! "Without us it would fall apart" kind of sums up a view of life I've held since childhood unconsciously. Keirsey sorted all this out into 16 "temperaments" and the names alone are telling. The eight ending in "J" are Teacher, *Counselor, Fieldmarshal, *Mastermind, Supervisor, *Inspector, Providor, and *Protector. Anyone you know? :) The starred ones begin with "I" The other eight ending in "P" are Champion, Healer, Inventor, Architect, Promoter, Crafter, Performer, and Composer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keirsey_Temperament_Sorter Mods, any chance that DocJohn could give an opinion? My best guess is anxiety management by maintaining control of personal environment. |
I'm very much like Rick as well.
I was brought up to suck it up and not complain. When I was a kid, I dealt with painful surgery for a clubbed foot, ear infections, and other surgeries. My pain tolerance is up in the 25 -50 range on a scale of 1-10 that the doctors always ask about when you visit. So when I say something hurts, it's off their charts. I was told this is the old "stiff upper lip Yankee", which came from my mom's side. My dad's family are a bunch of whimps that kivetch over every little nose drip or ache. I'm also one to push myself to be the more than the best I can be at no matter what I do. I'm entering into my Uni in September with a 3.89 GPA and was accepted into the Honors Program at the school. If I can't do something to the highest level that I can achieve, then I won't bother at all. Part of this I think is that I don't want to make an ***** out of myself in front of others. I'm also very introverted. I never go out to social gatherings and only have a handful of friends. I enjoy my personal time away from other people and have more fun walking by myself in the woods, or working on my own little projects during my free time then I do going to family gatherings or other parties. UPDATE:

Keirsey calls this the Third Ring of Temperament - Directive (J) vs. Informative (P). From Wikipedia: The third ring distinguishes between people who primarily communicate by informing others versus people who primarily communicate by directing others. Each of the four temperaments is subdivided by this distinction for a result of eight roles. The directive roles are Operators (directive Artisans), Administrators (directive Guardians), Mentors (directive Idealists), and Coordinators (directive Rationals). The informative roles are Entertainers (informative Artisans), Conservators (informative Guardians), Advocates (informative Idealists), and Engineers (informative Rationals). In our group here (plus those from Rick's list that include people from PLM) we have 10 Directive Mentors; 10 Directive Coordinators;5 Directive Administrators; and 8 Directive Conservators. Our group also contains 5 Informative Advocates, 2 Informative Engineers and 2 Informative Performers. (Actually, the 8 Conservators can also be included in the Informative group - they are classified by Keirsey as Informative, but score as an FJ) Are we confused yet? |
