High Blood Pressure from RSD/ CRPS?
Has anyone experienced high blood pressure either from the RSD/ CRPS or the medications you take for RSD/ CRPS??
What did your Dr. say? Is the high blood pressure from being in such pain? Thanks in advance. |
Vanessa,
My Blood Pressure has always been so low, and in fact a Dr I used for several years had talked about putting me on meds due to it being so low. Most of the time the nurses would check my BP at least twice because it was always so low. After being afflicted with this horrible monster my blood pressure has been higher than in my entire life, and so far every Dr I have talked to has attributed it to the pain being the culprit. I know several other RSD'ers that have experienced the same thing. Hugs, Janet |
Thank you for the reply. Now I know I am not the only one... :Sigh:
I will be seeing my PCP tommorow about my blood pressure problems... I'll see what my Dr. thinks about it tommorow. |
I Had Great Blood Pressure All My Life And Then One Day Out Of The Blue I Felt Awful And Checked It Myself And Then Called The Dcotor. It Was 200/100! There Was No Other Reason For It To Go Up Like That, So I Say Yes, It Seems One Can Get High Bp From Rsd.

Hi Vanessa. I have fluctuating BP due to the aunomic distrubance of CRPS. UK research has proven you can reduce your BP overall with controlled breathing. In the US a company called Resmet makes a maching ($299 in US) which if used 3 times a week will reduce your BP naturally. I have a link to it on my blog. I can't take meds so have had to find alternatives. My physiotherapist said if you breathe out twice as long as in for 15 minutes you will activate the parasympathetic nervous system and bring about a balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic syatem. tnis appears to be the principle behind the maching. It is a yoga style of breathing and is what the British studies were about I think.

Blood pressure with RSD
I have had RSD for 16 years. Nobody in my family, not my parents, or any of my siblings have been diagnosed with any sort of blood pressure problems. About a year ago my blood pressure went through the roof. I have been on medication for it ever since. At first I was told it was just "white coat fever"
(fear of Doctors). Then I was told it was probably due to some meds I was taking. But now the response from him is "who knows". I surely do not. If you get any other responses to your posting please let me know. I am a bit in the dark, too! Thanks |
Since I started this thread, I have had a LOT more blood pressure problems... my blood pressure drops really really low, and sometimes gets really high.
My neurologist told me that he atributed it to my autonomic nervous system playing a role in my RSD. I also pass out from the blood pressure drops. My pulse gets really high and sometimes low... I believe now, that I have read more and experienced more that when your b/p starts going nuts like mine it is the autonomic nervous system... but can be caused by some medications. Welcome, Busta73!! Glad to have you aboard (not glad about your RSD though! :(). |
welcome busta73
Welcome to the board Busta73 :) RSD for 16 years, I'll bet you have alot of experience to share and hope you find some help for you here too

I believe
RSD can cause blood pressure to go CRAZY!! I just spent $3400 on a highend stress test that takes pictures of you blood flowing in your veins and shows the heart working this test can pick up any heart problems-or so I'm told. MY test came back NO PROBLEMS but my blood pressure when I first got RSD would go from 214/119 to 70/50 in the same day. Now it stays high and I am on two meds for it, PAIN and STRESS will make it high. I am so sorry someone your age has to deal with this!!!! Hang in there!!! Carose P.S. Let's all run away with Frogga at least we would have some FUN!!!And Slovenia looks beautiful.

If I have to go somewhere and flare up and try to walk and use my cane, my BP goes high. However, after procedures that get done to me: nerve block & trial stimulator, my BP goes so low I get dizzy/vertigo and throw-up. I have learned to eat 1-2 pieces of bread right before I go to bed and to have something salty near my bed should I wake up with my dizzy spell. It helps but not completely. Salt, getting angry, etc. can make your BP rise.

Blood Pressure is a real problem for me:(
I take Atenolol, Methyldopa, Atacand and Coversyl every day for my BP and yet when it was checked on Tuesday it was 185/105:confused: I had never had a raised BP before CRPS---Not even pregnancy induced so I figure that it is all to do with the sympathetic action on the vessels and the heart. Unfortunately I have developed Left Ventricular Enlargement and Renal damage from my out of control BP, but at the moment I have no idea what else to do to control it. Diet I can control but pain and stress I am not so good at:wink: Bye for now Tayla  |
Stress
Vanessa,
One big factor in fluctuating high blood pressure is STRESS. And the pain from CRPS is certianly going to cause stress. The nurse at my PCP office can always tell when I am having a "bad day" with pain because of the blood pressure. Relaxation techniques can help if it is stress-induced. Be sure to watch it carefully. Very high pressure can do damage. Ask your MD if you should invest in a home BP device. Sometimes it can be covered by insurance if it is prescribed. Take care. Mike |
Hi,
My blood pressure was high until we got the RSD into remission. I also went through 3 bouts of vertigo afterward. Fell several times because of it.
Tayla, try and do as mike says and do some relaxation techniques. High blood pressure is why I lost Bill. His dad died at 42 with it and his Granddad was in his 50's when he died of it. Bill's was so high for so many years that our PA said he shouldn't have been alive 5 years ago. They had him on so many meds we couldn't keep up with them and it never came down even on meds. It finally messed up his heart. What they called good for him was 110 underneath on a good day. His would get as high as 140 underneath. The top would go in the 200's. I couldnt' get him off of salt either. Do work hard at getting it down. Sometimes we give credit to CRPS when it isn't always the case. It might have got yours high but it might not be what's keeping it there. Take care, Ada |
Hi Ness!
My husbands blood pressure go's up. his Dr. told him it was due to his medications. It then went low.. again his medications!! His dr. had to adjust all of his meds Even his insulin due to this. Me>?? I have never had problems with high BP it started after I got this RSD because of the pain I am in. it go's up some.the Dr. told me. how many meds are you on Ness? did you notice this with the newest ones they gave you? did this start after RSD meds?? pain?? write down when you take you meds. one pill at a time, or if you have to take a couple at a time, wait for an hr. check your blood pressure after this time. check it, write it down. I'm surprised the dr. didn't tell you to do this. Anyway, I hope and I will pray for it to stay good! Love ya Ness!! hugs, Love Desi |
I replied to this topic last year. Since then I've been able to stabilize my blood pressure to a fair extent by breathing out twice as long as in. My doctor change what I was doing with the breathing from 15minutes once a day to 3-5 minutes befor breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
Like you I'v ehad full cardiac work up showing no heart problem . A vascular physician/cardiologist diagnosed dyautonomia from CRPS/RSD. Like "in his hands" I would pass out from low BP and broke my nose passing out on one occasion. I could not stand in a cue at Woolies as my BP would drop. In the same day it would sour to very high with my face going red. Medication made this worse in as much as if there was any possibility of a drop in BP from medication I would have an extreme reaction. Then when it did drop it took 90 minutes or more before I could get up. Ambulance attendents couldn't take a pulse or BP. I would sweat profusely and over heat. It was thought that I got sympathetic exhaustion at times hich also caused the drop. I haven't ben ablke to take pain medication for a few years now but the breathing has stabilized my blood pressure to the extent that I haven't passed out in 12 months. I usually get swings in BP but not as extreme. The basic principal in this is that anything that activates the parasympathetic nervous system will bring down BP as it brings about a balance between sysmpathetic and parasympathetic. Controlled breathing will do this. I also have had great success with mirror visual therapy which has gioven me relief from pain and symptoms. Since last December I've had breaks between flare ups whereas before this I had no breaks at all and was feeling fairly desparate. I'm having a right lower quadrant flare at present and am dealing with that with mirror therapy. If interested have a look at my blog crps-rsd-a-better-life. The link is in my last post a few above this one. There's asearch at the top left of the blog. If you put in BP or blood pressure it will bring up what I've written about this. Hope this helps you. I know I was pretty scared when I was as bad as you. jeisea |
Hi Ada,
I try and do all the right things as far as I can. I watch my diet, have no salt, I try relaxation, deep breathing--:( Everything I can and still even with all of those horrible medications, it won't come down. Unfortunately I think it because of the damage that has already occured to my heart. I have had a horrendous couple of years, having spent almost a year in hospital with infections and in that time I developed endocarditis as a result of septicaemia, my physicain seems to think this maybe the source of my problems. Anyway I will still try everything that is suggested by you all---grateful thanks for all your input. Tayla:hug: |
My resting blood pressure was always very close to 120/ 80 and pulse was right at 60 most of the time whether stting or standing.
After the RSD my blood pressure has ranged from 58/ 23 to 188/ 115 and my pulse from 28 to 125. It seems the the high numbers are both the result of pain AND a physical means for the body to suppress the pain. The low numbers are usually the result of tranquilizers or powerful pain killers. Anytime I can suppress the pain through outside means the BP will drop down to normal though it hasn't always been immediate. |
Yeh, I have dysautonamia as well - can't even spell it. The drs just say that it's part of me having RSD. Means that I have orthostatic hypotensions and so we are hopefully getting a tilt table. As I'm bed/ wheelchair I have a tilting bed which gets me up to 40 degrees to try and manage it but it's definetly not brilliant! It's one of the most annoying things. But as with all things you learn to live with it. The worst is when it drops suddenly and then you are on the floor. My pulse is incredibly high (generally 150) and my O2 stats very low (94 on a good day) so my sats are absoloutly screwed! but no worries!! But it also goes high occasionally for no reason!!!
So, it all continues! Such fun!! love ya Froggsy xxxxxxx |
Blood Pressure from RSD
I am new to this sight but I have had RSD for 7 years. My blood pressure was always great and now just over the past 3-4 years I now take 2 blood pressure pills daily. They say my problem is pain induced hypertension ??? I often think sometimes they just say something because they really are clueless! I overall like my doctor and he has brought me a long way but there are days when I just think is it worth it all (pain 24-7, Dr. after Dr., medications enough to float a boat, etc.) gets old some days.
I am glad to know there are other people who are out there to talk too! Hanging In There :o |
Hi all,
When I was in the Drs. office Friday mine was 98 underneath. It has been staying in the 70s. Before RSD it was always low.
Friday when I went in I was in a lot of pain due to hurting my finger and it and the weather bringing my RSD out in my arm and hand. Mine seems to be pain related. I get really stressed when I am in so much pain I can't get it down. Ada |
Just reading this thread again. Blood pressure is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. CRPS/RSD involves the autonomic nervous system. The sweating is an autonomic response. The autonomic nervous system controls the things that happen "automatically" like your heart beat, your blood pressure, sweating etc. A cardiologist and a vascular physician/cardiologist both determined that my wildly fluctuating blood pressure was caused by CRPS/RSD. I had a full cardiac work up and have no heart problem. I get paroxysmal atrial fibrulation and have passed out from low blood pressure, breaking my nose on one occasion. I can have very high or very low BP throughout the day. Medication exaggerates the cardiac response so I am on no medication for CRPS. However as mentioned in my previous post, controlled breathing has stabilized my blood pressure to a large extent. The swings are still there but not as extreme. I haven't passed out in over 12 months.
Controlled breathing involves breathing out twice as long as in. The recommendation is for 15minutes at least 3 times a week. My GP says to do it for a few minutes up to five times a day every day. If I stop for any reason then the BP goes up. jeisea http://www.crps-rsd-a-better-life.blogspot.com |
Pressure
The last few times I went to the doctor they said my blood pressure was slightly elevated. Not sure it was nerves because of my lack of fondness I've come to have for the doctors I've met or it's my medication or even RSD.
Good question! Joan, you're in Massachusetts as well? Who do you see...if you don't mind me asking? :grouphug: |
Hey Nessa.
I have bp problems too. It didnt start until rsd. They dont know wen exactly after. I dont think it is all medicine related. I had bp reach like 220/175. no family history (except my grandma who got it young, but she had 11 children and it developed during 11th birth and some relatives who dont watch their diet), not my heart and kidneys and stuff, not medicines (bc wasnt on meds wen dx w/ hypertension bc of stupid "specialist" who says no meds, your faking it, fight through it, etc. but im sure meds do affect it), not stress (was on darvacet (sp?) at er one time and bp still through the roof although, once again, im sure stress doesnt help it) not diet (im 16, HATE salt, and i am tiny). i 99.9% do think it is rsd related (.1% is incase it happens to be VERY coincidential). it might not be listed under signs/symptoms, but a lot of our issues arent listed either. thats my opinion on this. hope this helps.:hug: nikki |

:eek:Gosh nikki. I do hope they hospitalised you and ran lots of tests, with a Diastolic of 175 you were in extreme danger. It is almost unheard of at the rate. I hope it is all under control now. Take care Tayla:hug: |
Hi Nikki,
That is extremely high blood pressure. I lost Bill to high blood pressure. You realy need to get that checked.
I had mine back down until this week and now it is back up again. I guess RSD does mess with the heart. Ada |
I have blood pressure problems caused by RSD and autonomic system problems. I get very low and very high blood pressure - it's normally too low and I have POTS. I pass out an awful lot (currently about 50 times a day) although this isn't always from blood pressure but also from pain/ neck/ whatever. I also have tachycardia and my pulse will go VERY high (170 bpm is worst reading I had) and then slow down tons (brachycardia). In the end the GP reckons that it is just pain/ RSD. I suppose it doesn't help that my mums side of the family all have very low blood pressure and my dads all have very high blood pressure.
Love ya Ness Frogga xxxxxx |
Yeah. Its under control now. That was 4-5ish months ago. It only reached that once and it put me in the er that night and at the top of the list in seeing the dr for my bp. I saw dr that next morning.

You can stabilize the fluctuations in BP to a fair extent by practising controlled breathing. Resmet make a machine that takes you through a breathing exercise. You can do it yourself by working out how many counts you normally breathe in and breathe out twice that number. The research say if you do it for 15 minutes at least 3 times a week you will overall reduce high blood pressure. My GP recommends doing it for 3-5mins before breakfast, before morning tea, before lunch, before afternoon tea and after dinner. This has worked to stabilize my BP to a fair extent. Sudden exercise still causes a problem as does stress. You can look this up on google. Hope it helps jeisea http://www.crps-rsd-a-better-life.blogspot.com PS always seek medical advice before trying anything new. |

I've had the same thing with RSD. MY blood pressure would be very high and very low and fluctuate all day. Any stress and it went wild. Something like going to the toilet would send it up and then plummeting so that I would find myself unconscious on the floor. Even broke my nose once hitting the tiles. Last year I was treated with Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture. After five treatments my autonomic system returned to normal. Crps symptoms also settled. I was so happy that I went fishing and ruptured my ligaments. The pain involved in that accident brought the whole thing back. Three months ago I had another series of Yamamoto treatments. I again had the same result and have been in remission ever since. This has proven to me that the cardiac stuff was CRPS caused as my cardiologist had said. I can't believe that it's all normal now. I just have to be careful not to have another accident. Not sure where you are but I know that people in Japan, Australia, Germany and now America are trained in this. YNSA was developed by a physician to treat stroke patients. It's used for MS, Parkinson's and neurological problems including the treatment of CRPS. |
I had a blood pressure problem hidden by rsd
I have been having problems with low blood pressure passing out etc but this turns out as many have said above from the rsd, problem was whether it be the rsd or the rsd meds, it was hiding a serious high blood pressure problem. this was accidently discovered when in hospital, while lying in bed, less activity, the hospital did not give me almost 6 of my scripts, I was also requiring less pain meds because i wasnt moving at all. my " normal"blood pressure was way too high. cz
Please say a prayer for my friend, Hannah my black lab. she is very ill.i dont know what i would do without here. we are on our way to dog hospital.thank you cz |
hi i have had RSD 31 years they put me on a blood pressure pill called ATENOLOL long time ago it also helps with swelling because it open up the blood vesals
|
My MD is really getting concerned about my BP. He says if it is up on my next appt he is going to have to give me meds for it. Yep, that's just what I need more meds! I take enough now and my BP doesn't stay up, just when I'm in pain, which is mostly all the time now. :(
