Dating and Dentures

I am scheduled to have my teeth extracted to give way to a complete upper denture. I'm in my mid forties and just got divorced last year. Does anyone have success stories concerning finding someone who's willing to love you, dentures and all?

Hi New Horizon and welcome!

Although I am married, I know what you mean, it was a little awkward for my hubby at 1st, well, due to the fact that the day of the extractions, he came home, bent over to give me a kiss and pressed too hard and I yelped and cried due to the pain....LOL...maybe THAT scared him! But he has adjusted. The only thing is I guess I'm pretty VAIN, and I say this as I just came back from FLA with my family as my Mom passed away and all the sibliings came together and I REFUSED to come out of the Bathroom until my teeth where in place, but my brother in law was comfortable talking withOUT his uppers in (he just had his done too)....LOL...so hubby has NOT seen me withOUT mine in! LOL...My Mom had uppers and lowers since age 19 and she had NO problem dating then and I NEVEr knew she had dentures until I was about 25 years old...LOL...NEVER saw her without hers in either! Even up until the day she passed away, she instructed the nurses that her teeth NEVER come out until they where in a room for tests and NOONE but the nurse and DR. was present...LOL....

I have posted my findings on denture adhesives, should you need that and for SURE Secure Denture Adhesive, found online only, is FAB! And really has given me the confidence that I needed! Before I really wasn't going out or talking to anyone! So check that out....

Let us know how you are making out....Bryanna is a GREAT source of guidance and we are all here to support you and post your experiences, I'm sure they will help someone else as well.

I waited for 2 years to get this done and although my life has changed in ways, it is okay, I'm just 'in training' that is all. I found the first month was REALLY trying, but hopeing ONE day that my tongue will STOP playing around with the plate...LOL...it has a mind of it's own no matter WHAT I tell it, the dentist tells me I have a 'curious tongue'...LOL....

Be patient at the beginning....as you read my posts, you will see on day 2 that I was REALLY regretting what I had chose to do! BUT by the end, I am comfy and STILL have the hard align to do and I'm sure at THAT point it will be much better! but LOVE smiling now!

Keep posting! And much success to you! And remember, it is NOT your TEETH they will fall in love with, it is the person you ARE they will fall in love with! And remember Mid-forties are today's 30s....(hitting my 50th this year...yikes!)....TRUE love doesn't see dentures, it sees your warm heart!
K:wink:

Humarock.. thanks soooooooo much for addressing my concern. I hope to find someone who isn't superficial, but it's tough to do that nowadays. It's funny but I actually wonder how I could keep my dentures clean should I chose not to take them out at night...lol.

I'm not sure if my wearing dentures is one topic I'd ever feel comfortable talking about with anyone. I guess it wouldn't be hard for one to tell if someone's teeth are real or not so I'll leave it be until someone asks!

I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, I'll keep smiling coz it may just make the world a better place for some :)

THAT is a great outlook to share the smiles! I have to say, my hubby has NOT seen me without them in and never will! LOL....he felt funny at 1st but now, like me, he is getting use to them and has remarked how wonderful they look and how more confident I seem and pointed out how they have 'filled in' some of my 'lines'...LOL...it is definatley a life change, but it depends I guess on how you look at it! LOL...smile on!

I wanted to encourage you in this matter. I had my upper extracted when I was 21 years old; my husband was very supportive although I wondered if he could really "love" me the same...I mean, I felt like I just aged myself overnight and all those cracks about dentures and such (from others) would no longer be humourous.

I recently got dental implants that now support an over-denture, but I still have to remove them for cleaning. My husband still loves me and says he honestly forgets that my teeth aren't mine; and he reminds that it is only a part of me, not all of me, and he loves all of me.

My sister also lost her teeth at the same age; she had to date with dentures. She met a wonderful man, and when their relationship got serious, she decided to tell him, figuring she didn't want to keep secrets. She also felt that if he loved her as he was saying, then this shouldn't matter. It didn't, and they are happily married with 3 children. :)

I agree -- the right person for you will love you for you.

Thank you all for your encouragement. In fact, I was just thinking today that it's probably better for me not to encourage anyone until I'm quite comfortable with the situation myself. I'm not scheduled to have my teeth extracted until a few weeks from now.

I just hope that I'll have the courage to tell the truth and risk rejection should that time comes. I know it's silly but I wonder if the person you're dating would find out anyway during the first kiss.

and what about 'french' kissing - I have the 'curious tongue' thing going on also - so I KNOW what that 'prosthetic' feels like - what about the person you are kissing - what are they going to think - I'm just beside myself about this. I have been divorce for 4 years and haven't kissed anybody since - so I'm real curious

Hi lorelei,

In 30+ years, I have not heard a patient mention anything about kissing being a problem for either themself or their partner........ any type of kissing :)

I could see being a bit self conscious about it, but I think you may be more worried than you need to be.

Hi. I have a quick question. Why would a person get dentures, when they could get dental implants (that are permanent) and no one would ever have to know.

Aren't implants better and more convenient than dentures?

Thanks much

Melody

Hi Melody...the cost, in my case. Between the implant and the crown, it's about 3 to 4 thousand per tooth. Thirty teeth, this adds up to $100,000. I sure don't have it :-(
