Rebound Headaches?

I probably should have searched for this topic, but at the moment, I'm just tired and my head hurts. I went to the neurologist today, and she is telling me that I am having rebound headaches. Does anyone else get these? What do you do to "cure" yourself of them.

She is suggesting NO caffiene, no artificial sugars and to change some of my meds around.

Also, she is hoping the numbness in my face is purely headache related or diabetes related. :(

Rebound headaches are common, but they're also one of the first things some doctors throw out there because they're relatively easy to determine. How? Pretty much by doing the things your doc suggested.

Medication cessation (until the headache subsides on its own) or rotation (try alternating between what you usually use and something else -- but sometimes rebounds can last more than a day, so this isn't always the best solution).

When I have gotten them, tapering down the amount of meds with each subsequent dose worked very well (kind of like the "hair-of-the-dog" theory for a hangover) but this doesn't work for everyone either.

They're somewhat like hangover/withdrawal. You can read about them here:

There is another term for this, that you can search:

Just remember that any cut back on medication MUST be done with your doctor's knowledge and guidance.
Withdrawal can be quite unpleasant.

I agree with your doctor about no caffeine.

Sugar might be associated with your headaches if you get your caffeine in sugary drinks. If you quit drinking sugary drinks containing caffeine, that will help. But it's the caffeine, not the sugar, that causes the headaches.

I think "rebound headache" is a misnomer for withdrawal headache.
