What is the half life of Vitamin D2?

I took the Vitamin D2 per prescription at 50,000 IU. Once per week,, and only took it once. I want to supplement with the D3 after this is out of the system.
What is the half life of this vitamin ( d2) and how long for it to take to leave the system? Since taking one pill, i have had some muscle pain and itching. Not for me.

thank you. Jess

This quote is for D2 (ergocalciferol) which is used on RX only in
50,000 IUs.

Quote:

The in vivo synthesis of the major biologically active metabolites of vitamin D occurs in two steps. The first hydroxylation of ergocalciferol takes place in the liver (to 25-hydroxyvitamin D) and the second in the kidneys (to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D). Vitamin D metabolites promote the active absorption of calcium and phosphorous by the small intestine, thus elevating serum calcium and phosphate levels sufficiently to permit bone mineralization. Vitamin D metabolites also mobilize calcium and phosphate from bone and probably increase the reabsorption of calcium and perhaps also of phosphate by the renal tubules.

There is a time lag of 10 to 24 hours between the administration of vitamin D and the initiation of its action in the body due to the necessity of synthesis of the active metabolites in the liver and kidneys. Parathyroid hormone is responsible for the regulation of this metabolism in the kidneys.

The 50,000 IU is designed to last about a week.
When you take the D3, you will not have the "lag" time to get the active hormone. You will also not be taking so much at one time. There might be something in the gelcap that you are reacting too as well.

I see in your profile you take oxy? This can cause itching, too.

Thanks Mrs D. I will be in the near future taking the Vit d3 supplement, and should have just gone with the gut feeling about this much. I have been taking oxy on and off for a bit, and never had any itching reaction until I took 35 mg. I only take 10-15 and havent had problems itching there. The muscle/bone and itching began after the supplement was taken.
I will be seeing my Ortho/foot and ankle dr on Wed to discuss as well.
