head ache meds any ideas

hi all

head ache meds any ideas apart from my instant memory issues and recall white outs ect the most life limiting thing is the constant daily head aches, this also gnaws at my mood

now I nearly lost it big time the other day at my head injury group with a supposedly trained care worker, when I was saying I could not see something because of my head ache and how I have to avoid certain things that set it off , and she waved glasses in my face and said why dont you were your glasses

I have special glasses to correct lower double vision due to eye damage . but vision is not the issue here ?

I hope some of you can understand , but would wish this on nobody the following can be set of by exertion, stress print, light, my glasses, jolts, in my right field of vision an area starts to flow like water and shimmer ,if I shut my right eye it is still present, but still in the right side , of my field of vision , thats my Que to dive for cover, incoming so to speak, I have to lay flat and cover my eyes a until it passes till the next time.

If I cant or do not ,dive for cover, the flowing water will become zigzags and crack my vision and the right side will fill with this hence I cant see . and a thunder cap head ache and nausea ensues, pain meds cant touch it . when that passes I have exertional pain in the left frontal part of my head. the right side is were I have the damage and titanium plates and general optical neuralgia

classic migraine I hear you say , this care worker cannot understand it not my eyes ,which makes me angry, think shes just too thick, and never experienced it herself, and my doctors just ignore, my laments , now I am seeing my nuro psychologist . soon I am fed up with freaking tests that tell me what I already know these test have been necessary

I like and respect my nuro psychologist ,but over 2 years down the track ,it must be time for practical help with functioning and pain management

I am also concerned that the residual pain, in the left side is causing more damage , hence my diving for cover stratagem

now I have had and may still have a CSF leak and sleep fits

but my question was and is (sorry for the rant) do we know of any medication that can stop this, happening or something I can take at trigger event to stop it progressing , that I can suggest to my doctors

thanks for reading

Hey Vini!

Long time no chat *smiles*. I totally understand the headaches. My neurologist tried several different meds to help but most had some negative side effects or didn't work. He decided to try me on amitriptyline 20 mg at night before bed. It is really a depression med that he told me was found to help with TBI headaches.

I've been taking it several months now. No my headaches are not GONE I still have headaches 24/7 BUT they are manageable now.

If you have not tried this you might ask your doctors about it. It is an older medicine and is not near is expensive as the newer meds I tried.

Hope this helps and I continue to send my white light....

A lot of my migraines were from my jaw being off, due to the TBI. After surgery to correct the jaw joints, if I don't keep my back teeth built up to hold them in place (the tmj's) I get migraines. I also get migraines from other problems from the injury, as well as opthalmolgic migraines. My neuroopthalmologist says it doesn't matter what is causing the migraines, migraine medicine will work for it. What have you tried? I tried them all (well, nothing new since I found one that works great.) A few were worthless to me. Imitrext worked, but sooo slowly. I now take Zomig zmt (dissolves on tongue.) As soon as I realize I've had an aura or prodrome, I take one. Sometimes they occur during sleep and I wake with the horrible migraine, but the tablet still does wonder and within the hour I'm not wrenching in pain. By the time for the second tablet (at 2 hour mark) I don't always need it, but doctors say to take it anyway.

It prevents me from those lying on my side at the edge of the bed in total darkness in a cool room ... with a bucket on the floor ... wondering whether I will puke first or not til after my head explodes. Yeah, zomig zmt does it for me.

Good wishes.

thank you

thank you for your help I now have some suggestions seems odd I should have to ask for a particular drug , but as I think you guys have learned, we can some times feel that we are not in the room at these appointments and in general, if you know what I mean? perhaps a med at night and I like the idea of the pill dissolved on tongue, its like stopping the fire at the first sign of smoke

thanks for your input and good to here from you again melek

The neurologist my daughter (15 years old and a good size adult weight) saw recommended amitriptyline starting at 10 mg and moving to 20 mg after a week. We tried if for a few of days but it made her fatigue worse. Since the sleep/fatigue issues are worse than the headaches, we switched her back to trazodone she was one.

Supplement wise, she recommended the following for headaches:

B2 (riboflavin) – 200 mg x2 daily
CoQ10 – 25-75mg x2 daily
Feverfew (don't have s specific dose on this one)
Migrelief – 1 tablet x2 daily - Migrelief is a combo of B2, Magnesuim and feverfew
Avoid - caffine - though if you don't usually use caffine - it can help with a bad headache
