Antibiotic Induced Flares

After being very healthy for 6 months, I recently had bronchitis and saw my doctor for a z-pak. By day two I had flared up. So I am back to the prednisone. And now it has hit me that the three flares I have had in the last year and a couple of months have been antibiotic induced. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know of a safe antibiotic?

Christel, Everyone is different with antibiotics. I can have Biaxin (clarithromycin) with no problems but some people cannot. It's the same "family" of drugs as the Z-Pak (Azirthromycin). DO NOT EVER take Ketek (Telithromycin)!!!

Any of the cephalosporins should work. Augmentin might be okay for you. Quinolones have a new warning for MGers to not take them (and for anyone else really).

Check out the drug list here. I think they still have it there.

Make sure both your doctor and your pharmacy knows of problem drugs for you. Also, do you have any seasonal allergies? Sometimes they can lead to sinus infections and bronchitis.

I agree with Annie. It is all about the person. I have been on the z-pack before and never had a problem. But with other ones even if there is no warning there is a chance of something flaring up. Just watch your symptoms and if you start to have a problem you need to talk to your doctor to try a different medication.
