Acid reflux and time release Niacin?

my mom was doing well on the time release Niacin { for high cholesterol} but started getting heartburn so doc said stop for 2 weeks and see if it goes away.
- and it did- so she started it again at a slightly lower dose- and heartburn returned in a few days.
She did have heartburn while taking a bone builder a few yrs ago.

She is going to the doctor today - but I just wondered if TR niacin can cause acid reflux/heartburn?

yes it does...

Timed release products usually are better at avoiding this tho.

When does she take it? before or after meals? Taking on an empty stomach is not recommended. And high fat meals also not recommended...since the stomach empties slowly and the drug remains there longer.

Niacin can cause ulcers.

I think many people have problems with high dose B-complexes because of this factor. The niacin causing heartburn.
My son cannot tolerate most. I found a "timed release" B-complex that he can take...me too... that avoids this side
effect.

I didn't think to ask about when she took it and food or not.
I'll find out more from her tomorrow.

thanks

If I remember correctly, timed release niacin is not a good idea because it can harm the liver.
