Olfactory hallucinations? Something else?

Hi,

Wednesday morning I awoke at a little before 9:00 near when my alarm goes off to what seemed to be an unpleasant smell of slightly burned coffee.

I have smelt this before when I woke up --- maybe at least one other time ---- maybe three times total. The smell is unpleasant . . . . I do not like coffee (burned or not).

Hubby was not home and not making coffee or burning anything for that matter. Later, hubby and I considered that the cpap machine was the problem. He asked me to try the machine. Everything was fine for the few mins I had it on and was awake.
Could a person dream a smell? I purposely try not to remember my dreams. If this is from a dream, . . . . the dreaming seems to be rather intrusive.

The truth is that I do not want to actually consider where this smell is coming from as I am freaked out.

I am posting to ask for support. Thank you.

Re: dreams

Dear Mari, I do believe you can dream a smell. The sub concious does some strange things while we sleep. Our brains are working all night long on something. I always go to bed with a good book, it calms my mind and leaves me in a state of peace before sleep. I pick good books, which direct my mind to better places, full of love and adventure. Usually I dream about the books.I would not like to wake up to a horrible smell eithor. Put a lavender sachet under your pillow perhaps, or a nice smelling bar of soap wrapped in a napkin. You will dream of that scent I bet instead of the coffee. It is all in telling your mind what you want to dream and smell. Just my opinion. Pleasant dreams, and no coffee. ginnie

Do you have the new light bulbs... the energy saving ones?

We have had them for a while now, and the one in the dining room started to "burn" out...and made a terrible burning smell.
(I think this is the first one to burn out in fact--they last a long time)

Hubby denied smelling it...as I am the super sniffer around here.
But we both tracked it down to the bulb leaking. I sure hope it wasn't mercury vapor leaking out!

We replaced the bulb and the smell is gone. I found it very worrisome however.

Mari

Sending some support. I would think it might be more of what is called
a aura. If it is just a short period of time.

It can even be from a headache, that isn't visible but there, hoping this
makes sense.

Because in some cases the aura is all that happens, it seems to stop
what was going to happen.

But they too are something that can freak you out. So yes, sending you some thoughts, and hoping you are doing better.

ok... but i really gotta say...

Dear Mari,

first, you are not going crazy, and i believe you will be fine.

i doubt it was a dream but i doubt it was a true hallucination (as in psychiatric). i am sending comforting hugs.:hug::hug:

however, i want to say something and i apologize in advance if my reply goes past your comfort zone. i thought exactly what Donna said. an olfactory "aura". unpleasant burning smell is a typical one. however i believe you should not ignore this event. our bodies give us these signals to help guide us in staying well.

i am concerned about you getting enough oxygen during sleep. brief hypoxia can trigger an "aura." auras per se are completely harmless, but the possible hypoxia should be checked out.

if you were not sleeping with the CPAP, please be sure to do so. perhaps, wear it even if you are going to "rest" and might fall asleep.

if you were wearing the CPAP, then it would be a good idea to see your sleep doc and report the incident. the CPAP may need to be recalibrated, and/or he may recommend some tests for you.

i am sorry if you didn't want to hear this or think about it. but i care about you and i want you to stay well. if my post is really bothersome, please just let me know and i'll remove it or the upsetting content, whatever you wish.

(((hugs)))

Thank you.

Thank you. I appreciate your support.

At 6:00 this morning hubby looked at the cpap machine again. It has a heating device to warm the water in the humidifier. . . . .
According to hubby, the machine can burn some hair or dust
(It is a bulky machine that I keep on the floor.)

The heating element was very warm (almost hot) when I tested it with my hands. I cannot make a good guess on the temperature because the kitchen thermometer I tried did not work.
When I take off the mask, the element and the water cool almost immediately.

If I were up to the task, I could look for a better thermometer or call the company ----- not going to do those things for now.

Waves,
I have an appointment with the sleep doc in July. I can move it to May. Before then I don't have time (or the inclination really).

If it happens again, I will promise to call the sleep doc. Does that help?
