Please Help
 

I am waiting for doc on call to call - of course it's Sun. morning. I am having a heart attack. I grabbed Becca's meds and we were at a friends house last night when she got them.

This morning I went to get them out of my bag to give morning dose and realized SHE GOT 2 25mg PILLS INSTEAD OF 2 5mg PILLS OF LAMICTAL LAST NIGHT.

We are titrating up to 2 25mg pills in AM and 2 in PM - - - - but should not be there for another month or so.

They are both tiny white pills.

I have NEVER messed up the meds. I am so nervous. . . looking all over for rash . . . I messed up . . . .

She seems fine. How long to see rash or effect? Did I just ruin it for her on this med???

Any help appreciated.

We have messed up the lamictal dosage before in a similar way. It is easy to do. Those pills look so similar that it is almost impossible to tell the difference.

I am sure the on-call doc will call back soon with better info, but when we had a similar situation we were assured that any real problems would have been evident pretty quickly. If I remember right, Langan was much harder to get to sleep that night, and once we discovered the mistaken higher dose that made sense. Your neuro may have you adjust the next dose or they may tell you to just keep an eye out for any problems and go back to the regular dose. We were told to just return to our regular dosage and everything was fine.

Hang in there. I know this stuff is hard enough without something like this happening, but try to give yourself a break. I often joke about how I am constantly blowing my chances at mother of the year with things like this. But we're all human and can only do our best. You're an amazing mom and I am quite sure this will be a distant memory soon!

There is so much wrong dosing by nurses in hospitals with everything organized and set up to control the administration of meds. If they can't get it right in a hospital setting, how can a mother always do it in real life?!
I hope Becca is fine and doesn't become sensitized, but I agree with Wendy. Don't beat yourself up. You'll be VERY careful from now on. :o This is a difficult life to lead!

The doc called and said just to give her 5mg this AM and then continue on regular schedule from then on.

I am still in disbelief over what I did. I have been so careful. I guess being somewhere else distracted me. Still no excuse.

You're so right - I will be triple checking from her on out. And I put the 25mg tablets way up high as I should have before because we do not need those for another month or so.

Now I just pray she does not show a rash. .. .

Like we needed a little more stress in our lives. Ugh. This just stinks.

Thanks again. You all made me feel not alone, a bit better . . . at a very stressful moment that no one else in my life would likely understand.

{{HUGS}}} I think we all have messed up the meds!! My "favorite" was when I walked into the kitchen, got Jake's pills, got a glass of water, and took them myself!!! :eek:

Micky is correct on messing up meds. I am glad the Doc could put your mind at ease.

When Trevor was 5 days old, I was nursing. I needed to give the cat her Thyroid medication. I was holding it in my hand while I looked for the cat. I got distracted and ended up taking the cats Thyroid med. sigh...

I called Poison Control due to my concern on nursing. They LAUGHED :rolleyes: after they told me the cat had such a low dose that it wouldn't hurt either one of us.

I like the plan of putting the bigger pills up high.

Kathleen you may consider buying a pill box. I take over 6 different meds in a given day. Most of them have 4 compartments and the container for each day of the week.

I know nothing about lactimal, but can chime in and agree with everyone else....don't be so hard on yourself. I mixed up my daughter's trileptal when we were titrating her up to full dose. Scares the hell out of you, but it is an easy mistake to make.

On top of Helen having all her meds, 5 a day, I have a 10 yo on trileptal also. She takes it 3 times a day, and Helen takes it twice a day, different dosages of course which makes it even more difficult to remember. Then add on top of it the dog got sick and is on two antibiotics, and a steroid. He is on kefflex like Helen, fortunately he takes a pill and not the stupid pink syrup!OMG, I am going insane just trying to remember who gets what and when.

Hugs to you and Becca, I will pray that she will be fine, and the med will still work. We do use a pill box for Helen's depakote and it works great, especially ensuring that my husband and I don't overdose her. It can get crazy when we are all running one way or the other, we can always look at the pill box if one of is not around to make sure she has had her depakote.
