The Gurgling Gut
 

You are sitting in church at 11:30, Sunday morning, and the pastor is about half way through his/her sermon when the unmistakable sounds (bbbrrruuuuuuppp ggguuurrrggglle guurrrggllllee brrruuupppp) of a gurgling gut 'chyme' in to add a bit of humor to the otherwise serious message. Unsure of whether it was your stomach or your neighbor's, you are not quite ready to accept the guilty plea, so you toss one of those accusing glances in your neighbor's direction, only to find your neighbor doing the same thing in your direction. Then comes the second wave, a bit louder than the first, and you catch the wife of a young married couple elbow-nudging her new hubby while emmitting a little snicker-giggle. Relieved that it wasn't you, and wondering what it was that she gave him for breakfast you note how cute the young couple are together, as you settle in for the last 15 minutes.

Question...when was the last time you heard your stomach gurgle? Has the frequency of it changed since your encounter with Parkinson's?

...you should have held up your cell phone,smiled knowingly in the direction of the ogglers...and whispered;
"one hell of a cool ring tone don`t you think"

Stomach Gurggling
 

Funny you should mention this. My stomach has been bubbling, gurggling, rocking and rolling for about 4 months now. Maybe it is the PD.......never thought about that possibility. Dx'd back in June of ' 06...symptomatic since June of ' 04.

Can you think of anything that you did, changed, stopped or started at about the same time that your stomach began gurgling? For instance, did you begin or stop taking any medications or supplements, or did you begin or halt any exercise programs, or was there a significant change in your stress level?

Hello Mike,

I think what you are doing is wonderful. I have never had gurgleing from my stomach but have suffered from ulcers. I have a genetic form of PD. In Europe it would be labeled Parkin Disease.

There should be a healthy amount of gurgling in the gut due to the process of peristalsis as the various muscle groups in the stomach and intestines mix and push food through to prepare it for nutrient transfer in the intestines. If there is an absence of gurgling, there might be an absence of peristalsis and the presence of constipation and toxic bowel. Again, the Vagus Nerve is involved in regulating peristalsis.

Hope you didn`t take offence at my "seemingly glib" reply to your post.I picked up on your lovely sense of humour and you caught me in one of my "lets make the best of a potentially embarrassing situation] moods.It is my way of coping.Unfortunately not everyone shares this angle on things.
However...in reply to the more serious issue...I too have been in that situation many many times.And yes,it has occured more frequently in the last few years and I feel sure is a direct result of the way in which PD affects your eating habits and subsequently the digestive tract.I personally do not eat as well as I should.My sister in law who is a physio,and is well informed about PD says we should be grazers....little and often.I don`t know if this will help at all..but my system certainly cannot cope with huge meals.

Believe me...I have turned down many an invite to a concert,or the theatre.I know for sure that at some stage durin g the performance,my insides will resound with a musical interlude in gargantuan style...a bit like the 1812 overture .

...as the conductor points his baton at steffi's belly, as she, on cue, goes gurgle gurgle gurgle gurgle garumpapapapa...and the audience goes wild......definitely no offense taken Steffi. I just forget sometimes to notify my face when I laugh. Thank you for your sense of humor as well.

Requip ?
 

Do you take Requip? I am terribly embarrassed to admit it, but out with it: Requip makes me burp - roiling blush-making beer burps. But my stomach doesn't growl.
I NEVER burped before, so I know it is the Requip. I don't know which is worse...........
