Celiac/gluten related PN
Hi Folks
I have been suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy for the last 4-5 months. I have gone off allopurinol for my gout (which I suspected initially as the cause) and also taking supplements (R-ALA, ALC, vItamin B12, omega 3) to combat my neuropathy. I did an EMG recently and some bloodwork (copper, zinc, immunoglobulin, protein electrophoresis) which came back normal. I have an MRI scheduled for next month. I also did a celiac profile test and was normal on immunoglobulin igg and transglutaminase iga but high on deamidated gliadin igg antibodies. Does it mean a conclusive evidence of celiac with normal tranglutaminase but high DGA? Do you think a biopsy is warranted? I started to eat gluten free a couple of days ago, to see if it helps. Any opinions advice is appreciated. Thanks and have a good day.. |
It might be--
--though the test with the highest correlation with small intestinal damage and frank celiac is the transglutaminase IgA assay.
The deamidated anti-gluten IgG test is the most sensitive, but least specific, of the tests in a standard celiac panel. There's been a correlated tendency for that test to be the first to go "positive", though, in cases of celiac and especially in cases of non-celiac gluten sensitivity, the latter being an entity that is still somewhat controversial in some circles. |
