Stem cells for Parkinson's getting ready for clinic

......and possibly true, realization of the theories put forth long ago. Expect better results as fetal tissue, perhaps quite a bit better if no oncogenes are turned on in the areas that these new cells will find themselves. My concern is will they be of any use in "long dead" areas, where there is a wasteland of dead tissue, containing cellular garbage dumps. The closer they get to good results, the more questions appear. Things like delivery are difficult to address , because there are many different places where malfunctioning neurons are wired to, and that is really the question, can these originally working path ways be replaceable at all. Those of us who have had parkinsonism long enough know that it is a moving degenerating target to hit. That's probably part of the success stories of the past, since we all are different, there is something differently affected in nearly all of our different brain architectures.This technology may only work well for certain "types" of cell replacement, and i can see it being very sensitive to correct implantation techniques, guided by perhaps , real time, SPECT or something like that. if the theory is correct, then post operative imaging should see "lit up" areas, proving or perhaps implying functional correction. This all makes me think of the lyrics from one of my favorite "Who" songs; "hope i die before i git old"

i mentioned this research to a friend and they immediately asked me if i would undergo the procedure or contribute funds. kind of caught me by surprise, hadn't really thought about it, probably because i'm busy with my SSDI application and worrying about that but i am surprised there isn't more excitement about this, not only for the hope of reversing some symptoms but that this could open the door to a whole new way of doing/funding clinical trials imho.
if successful it sure will upset the pd applecart.

so exercise and stay healthy so you'll qualify for brain surgery. and newbies, don't be scared of l-dopa, we may have a cure of sorts in 5 years, enjoy yourselves, it's usually pretty good stuff for the first 5 years, just my opinion of course.
