Not recovering from SCS surgery
 

Had an SCS implanted in May, 2011 for entrapped nerve in left hip. Was told SCS was only course of treatment. The SCS does help the pain in my hip, however, the result of the surgery to implant the SCS is terrible. Have severe pain in my thoracic area (where the bone was drilled and leads were implanted) and into my left side/rib area. Most days can't do simple things like make a simple meal for myself. Had facet joint injections on Nov 1 and they did not work. Am now told this is most likely permanent and am now diagnosed with post laminectomy syndrome. Surgeon said nothing more he can do for me and recommends pain specialist. Spoke with pain specialist who said since the injections didn't help they are not sure what they can do for me, but am going to see them anyway. Anyone else out there with an SCS have these same issues. I'm told this is not normal.:(

I'm real sorry to be reading this - and NO it is not normal. I'd like to SLAP your Dr! :eek: Sounds like he is leaving you high and dry. I would sure hope that something can be done about this.....in my opinion this guy needs to fess up to what is going on.
Post laminectomy syndrome? I wonder what Mark will say about this. He knows much more about these things.

I'm so very sorry about this Suzanne. Something just doesn't seem right.
Please stick around and you'll get some great feedback.
Maybe we'll all gang up on your surgeon and give him a piece of our mind!

Dear Suzanne- how does one console another who, being in your shoes, is told you have pretty much got what you are going to get. Certainly not the same, but in a similar vein I was informed the resulting nerve injury from having had to await corrective surgery far too long after a car wreck was permanent. Only through the intervention of SCS was I able to come away from medication.

Your situation begs that I ask whether after you consult with pain intervention specialist you may be in a position to inquire [inquire only at this point, as inquiry is often a free first consult] with legal counsel whether your implant may have produced a syndrome indicative of improper care during the surgery. This is not a question for the doctor, only a question for a lawyer whose practice specialized in assiting clients with the medical arena. I only bring it up as there may be significant cost associated with your forward looking care to handle the resulting pain and its related needs. I never write such words lightly, and forewarn you if you take such a path it may be difficult to find practitioners who will treat you in your vicinity; however, that being said, you deserve answers if there are answers to be had.

Aside from your work with a certified interventional pain management specialist to attend your pain all I may do is pray for you, and pray I am doing, Suzanne. It is heartbreaking to learn of such an outcome. God is with you in this.

Thank you Rrae and Mark56 for your feedback and support. It's comforting to me to hear from you. The more I research about post laminectomy syndrome concerns me that this is a permanent disability. I am seeing pain specialist on Tuesday. I'll let you know the outcome of that visit. Thank you again for your support and prayers. :grouphug:

I am so sorry to hear about all you are going through. It doesn't seem right the way the Dr is responding to your pain.. I hope and pray that you have a pain management Dr is familiar with your situation and can find a way to help you manage your pain. Good thought and prays coming your way.
