Dr. Terry Walhs - Mitochondria - Curious on reviews or thought?

Hi guys - I watched some videos and read some articles about Dr. Terry Wahls who got herself out of a wheel chair and overcame her MS by eating correctly. I went and bought the book today just to have a reference and just wanted to know what some of you all think of her story? Or, have any of you read her book? Followed the diet?

Ended Steroid infusions yesterday, still wired... body is pretty jittery! Hope everyone is having a good weekend :)

Good to hear from you. I hope you are feeling some better.

I've read every lecture and article by Dr. Terry Wahls that I can find. I am very impressed by her research and her results (on herself)! I don't see me doing all the things she has done but OTOH I am not in the situation she was in. I have added some of the things she recommends into my diet. Fortunately, I love kale.:)

Im an odd one with steroids. They make me violent and very sleepy. Never got that wired feeling. Glad your doing better.
As for this Dr Terry Wahls, never heard of her. By overcome her MS, what did she mean?

Occasionally I attend a support group meeting. I suggested to the group leader to have Dr Wahls speak for us, as she lives in this area. I was told she spoke once, before my time, and the group didn't think much of her and didn't want to invite her back. I believe she does not speak for free.

Every diet, every treatment on this planet works for someone. Some people are more able than others to promote their design and/or ideas.

Will her diet work for you if applied exactly as directed? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe some of the things she suggests will help you.

Try everything! Something might work for you.

I never heard of her diet. I am curious about why "mitochondria" is in the title of this thread. Later--I've read the thread posted earlier by Dejibo. I was on that thread saying I can't eat green leafies because I have Porphyria (too much sulfur in them). But I do take D and B vitamins and a small amount of CoQ10 is in my sublingual B. I have never tried Krill oil because I have never tolerated any fish oil. I cannot digest it. I do eat walnuts for unsaturated fat, which is the best I can do.

Mariel-

Here is a 17 minute talk she gave this year at TED:

Her diet is similar to Robb Wolf's Paleo Solution Diet. If I lived by myself..no family, I'd eat this way. It's so hard to cook two different meals, every meal. I have started though by eliminating all dairy and I gotta say, my stomach feels alot better. Been dairy free for about six weeks now.

Annagain...I too love kale! It is packed with nutrients. I buy organic...soooo good!!

Mariel...I take the same supplements you do. I did try the krill oil, but is causes cramping. I'm am going to start magnesium oxide soon.

What I'm not to sure about is the liver and the jerky that is called for in her diet. She suggests eating liver weekly...yuk!!! Actually, I'm all for eating like a caveman...nobody was here poisoning their food...it was pure and wholesome.

Gotta say Sparky, I agree with you. Im trying the vegetarian diet, trying to see if it will help with the inflammation. Dont know if it will work, but it wont hurt, so why not. I dont hop on any one persons "bandwagon" so to speak. I know there's no cure, there's no miracle anything out there for us. I think thats why so many of us do dmd's, special diets, exercises, etc. We try anything to keep going and to stop or hold off the progression. Hope I didnt go off subject here.

AnnAgain, I will listen to that 27 minute program, but I know from experience I cannot tolerate the so-called Caveman Diet. I tried it years ago--many years ago--when someone called Nick and others were advocating it on the previous forum to this. I was, after 4 days, in tremendous pain. I could not wait to return to the Swank Diet.

I needed carbs because I had Porphyria, and I didn't need the extra fat, because I had MS. I have always had trouble digesting fat, and this may be due to liver weakness, or enzyme weakness in the stomach, although I test normal for liver function at all times. I do take enzymes for digestion. Maybe I need that Pancrease I had years ago, for higher protein digestion.

Anyway, I have no trouble with either protein or carbs as long as I avoid high saturated fat of any kind. And I need carbs both for "roughage" and for Porph regulation. I can't get much roughage from "greens" like kale, or lettuce, I must avoid leafy greens. I get along dandy with all grains, so I guess I went down a different evolutionary path than the Cave-eaters. Seriously, our ideal diet does in part relate to what ancestors ate.
My healthy Irish ancestors ate lots of potatoes. My sick Scots relatives ate tons of saturated fat in biscuits and fatty meats, with plenty of butter. I don't know what the English ancestors of mine ate.
Excuse rambling.

Carebear, I wish I could eat Kale. There was some served at the hospital today where I had a test, and I was mooning for it. But I can't eat it because of high sulfur content and my Porphyria. I sometimes really long for a salad. But I am able to eat some tomato, and tidbits of celery. I love avocado but find it too fat, even though it's good fat, and Dr. Swank predicted this about avocado when writing his book. For dinner I had broiled chicken, a baked apple, and a small tomato. Good girl.
