stefanie, I have a question

You mentioned that you are losing the weight that you put on due to the prednisone. I've been taking it for nearly a year now to help control the polymyalgia and of course have suffered the inevitable added pounds. I thought that since it didn't increase my appetite (rather the opposite) I would escape the gain but that isn't so. How long after you stopped taking the prednisone were you able to reverse the weight? I do hope to get off the stuff eventually but it may be a while and I sure hate to see this happening. Kind of a double whammy since the tn drugs also caused a gain. I don't get many good anwers from my doctor who kind of shrugs, like how should she know. I was cheered to read your post on the possibility. Nancy

Don't get too excited. I wasn't on Prednisone for this surgery. I was on Decatron and I gained 45 lbs in 3 weeks. I was only on it for 6 weeks b/c of brain swelling, but it basically killed my entire body. I am now having female issues due to it as well.
When I started walking again and moving around, I lost about 20 lbs without trying. A lot of it was water weight b/c I had the buffalo hump, cheeks the size of baseballs, etc.
I am now exercising each day (as much as I can b/c of the balance issues) and have only lost about 3 more lbs. I have to lose it b/c I am going to try for a baby soon (I can't wait any longer). And I'm eating less. I was never a big eater, so throwing 45 addition lbs on me wasn't very fair! LOL
I basically grew up on Prednisone. It's not as strong, but I did gain from it. I would work my butt off to get it off. I never gained 45 lbs, but at one time I did gain about 15. I gain it fast and lose it slow.
I would try joining WW or following a diet. I make sure I work out at least 5 to 7 times a week. And I really make myself sweat.
And I don't care what any doctor says, steriod weight does not just fall off as soon as you stop taking the drug. I've been told that many times and want to hit the doctor each time he said it to me!
But it can come off, but you have to work for it. I have food allergies, but I would do NutriSystem is I could. Or South Beach. I know people who lost weight from them and I would do them if I could.
I think steriods change your metabolism too...it just seems harder to lose it than if you gained it from eating a lot. Again, I'm not an expert, but I have been struggling with steriods and weight gain since puberty! And it does a number on you mentally as well to gain all this weight.
